From Rev. Nickie...From Rev. Nickie...From Rev. Nickie...From Rev. Nickie...

Almost every spiritual tradition uses prayer. There are many forms of prayer that include but are not limited to breathing, singing, dancing, using prayer beads, the rosary, chanting, lighting a candle, turning toward Mecca or turning within. These are just a few of the forms. There are several methods of prayer too, such as affirmative prayer, holding a thought or a period of time, praise and appreciation. Plus, our very thoughts are prayers so whether we are aware of it or not, we are always praying. The writer of the Gospel of Luke (11:1-4 Message translation) tells us that the disciples asked Jesus to be taught how to pray. Jesus replied with a pattern for prayer that looks like this: “Father reveal who you are Set the world right Keep us nourished Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others Keep us safe” Prayer is an experience of our own God nature and our own God potential. As we move from understanding to knowing our Oneness with God we begin to live in ways that reveal our light, that bring peace and harmony to the world through our vision and our actions. We spend time in prayer and meditation as a way to nourish ourselves and be in communion with all that we call the Uni-verse. In prayer we are in a consciousness of forgiveness, recognizing that no one and nothing is against us. We realize the power of creation that we are in this world. We have the opportunity through directing our thoughts and feel-ings to create a life well lived. Living in our divinity, we also live from our power. As we live a life of prayer we discover prayer improves our self-control, increases our trust and faith, and offsets the negative effects of stress. Prayer even makes us nicer. A University of Rochester study identified that prayer is the most widespread alternative therapy in the United States stating that 85% of people with illnesses turn to prayer. Are you willing to have your life be filled with moments of prayer? Try this on for a month, especially when things inner or outer feel difficult, turn to prayer. When you feel happy, speak words of appreciation. When you feel sad sur-round the sadness with your inner knowing of what nourishes you. See what happens and feel free to come and share your results with me.

Acceptance of “What Is.”Acceptance of “What Is.”Acceptance of “What Is.”Acceptance of “What Is.”

We all experience loss, some much more than other, some of it seems horrific, unimaginable…..yet most of us get through it, though not always unscathed. The world is full of wounded people helping other wounded people.

Accepting life as it comes to us is often met with resistance, yet brimming with possibilities; it shows us who we are and can be. As one man in the group put it while facing his perceived nemesis, “How dare you show me who I am!” An-other man expressed finding Love for himself through his response to the “triggers” that draw out his past hurts.

The Group reflected upon and discussed the fullness of acceptance, but not without asking: When is it our place NOT to accept the situation?

The mirror gets a little cloudy when moral issues come into play and we find our self emotionally upset, such as with the current events in the United States. Acceptance becomes a kind of acquiescence to what we feel is wrong.

We are reminded that had some person not stood up, spoke up, acted, risked, etc. we would not even have our beloved United States of America. There is a time and a place for us to take a stand, to say our piece, as Jesus often did.

How do we know when to not accept? The men decided it was something each of us has to discover within our Being, the totality of who we are as moral and caring individuals. That sounds too simple, so did the discussion matter? We think so; it’s the journey, not the destination that matters most.

If you are a man who would like to explore large ideas like Love, join us in Room 102 at 7:00-9:00 pm every Monday at Unity of Wilmington. For more information contact Jim at 910-232-1598 or Lendon at 910-616-0633.

Becoming a member at Unity of Wilmington indicates a definite, considered choice to be an integral part of this Unity spiritual community. It represents a commitment to the manifestation of Unity principles in one’s life, and a com-mitment to share in the joys and responsibilities of co-creating and maintain-ing this on-going Unity ministry.

These two 2-hour classes serve as an introduction to Unity principles as well as the history and structure of our governance. While attendance is manda-tory for membership in Unity of Wilmington, people are welcome to attend without joining.

Facilitated by Rev. Mindy and Rev. Nickie. If you have been a member at another Unity church, you may be eligible to transfer your membership. Contact Rev. Mindy for more information: [email protected].

This service is a powerful opportunity for healing and personal spiritual connec-tion with the Divine. Be present with a group of kindred spirits affirming our oneness, wholeness, and connection with all that is. Participate in any of the elements of the service as you feel guided: ritual stations such as candle light-ing and water releasing bowl, affirmative prayer, meditation, energy healing, one-on-one prayer with ministers, and more. Come experience Spirit for your-self.

As a part of our emerging strategic plan, a small group met over the course of July and August to craft intention statements. These statements were sourced from a community meeting held last year and facilitated by Unity con-sultant, Rev. Therese Lee. They flow from our mission and vision statements and are within the framework of our core values. They were discussed at both the Board level and at the August Town Hall Meeting. Intention StatementsIntention StatementsIntention StatementsIntention Statements: Unity of Wilmington is a loving, vibrant, inclusive, spirit-led community. Unity of Wilmington’s congregation is a powerful force of love and joy, embrac-ing diversity and living Unity’s spiritual principles. Unity of Wilmington’s relationships are centered in integrity, authenticity, and unconditional Love. Unity of Wilmington is an inspirational, expanding ministry demonstrating suc-cessful leadership, prosperity and responsible stewardship.

Often when people discover Unity, they say “I didn’t know there was an entire spiritual movement that believes the same things I do,” or “I wish I had known about Unity earlier.” We are asking you to think of someone who may benefit from our use of practical Christianity and tell them about us inviting them o a Sunday service, class or workshop. Not only may they benefit, but so may you! A kind donor has offered an incentive: for each Sunday anyone at-tends in September, including you, they will re-ceive a raffle ticket for a $300 Amazon gift card. The drawing for the prize will be held at our Annual Picnic and the ticket holder must be present to win. What a great way to share the love of Unity!

Art Gallery MinistryArt Gallery MinistryArt Gallery MinistryArt Gallery Ministry

Unity of Wilmington runs and operates a small art gal-lery ministry as a way to acknowledge and honor the movement of Spirit in the creative expression of our members. We recognize that art sometimes helps tell those important stories and brings a reflective or medi-tative perspective to spiritual ideas which permeate our lives.

Payton Andrews will be exhibiting her work during the months of September and October. Payton Andrews is a local artist and native of North Carolina. She has created and sold abstract paintings, photography, and hand-crafted stone jewelry for over 15 years. Payton’s love of art started with abstract paint-ings, based on feng shui principles and color therapy. She is also passionate about the beauty of nature expressed through her photography. All of Payton’s artistic creations are rooted in her metaphysical beliefs and spirituality.

In addition to selling her artwork, Payton has donated paintings, photography, and jewelry to non-profit organizations, such as the Women’s Resource Center in Greensboro, North Carolina; the Alamance Community College Foundation in Graham, North Carolina; and the Cape Fear Community College Foundation in Wilmington, North Carolina. Payton’s artwork has been in several art exhibits in Greensboro and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She also contributed to an artistic project for the New Hanover County Courthouse in 2010.

Payton loves being a member of Unity of Wilmington and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to share her love of art with us.

For more information on the “rules” for participation and entry into this lottery, please contact the church office or Cecelia But-ler, Coordinator.

We look forward to beautiful and interesting exhibits throughout the year!

Unity membership is unique. While other spiritual communities may have spe-cific obligations, it is most important to recognize that membership in Unity of Wilmington is a commitment to deepen our own personal spiritual expansion, and to experience relationships which are centered in integrity, authenticity, and unconditional Love. Membership also is a commitment to share in the joys and responsibilities of co-creating and maintaining this on-going Unity ministry. We unite in purpose in order that we may minister more effectively to each other and to the greater community. Together, we are a powerful force of love and joy, embracing diver-sity and living Unity’s spiritual principles. With the formal adoption of revised bylaws last February, all members are re-quired to declare their desired membership status for the coming year. If you are a member, please complete your membership declaration card and return it to the Admin Office no later than October 15.

Guiding Prayer:Guiding Prayer:Guiding Prayer:Guiding Prayer:

Aligning my mind and heart with the mind and heart of God, I center myself in Pure Being. In a state of spiritual realization, I remember I can never be broken, limited, or unworthy. Courageously, I rise into my true spiritual nature in this moment of healing. I heal the whole of me as I accept that I am brave. I am bright. I am beautiful. As I heal in body, mind, and spirit, I support healing in my family, my commu-nity, the earth, and the world. Centered in Pure Being, I am a healing presence.

From Rev, Mindy...From Rev, Mindy...From Rev, Mindy...From Rev, Mindy... What is Unity’s Language of Oneness? What is Unity’s Language of Oneness? What is Unity’s Language of Oneness? What is Unity’s Language of Oneness? While the term “The Language of Oneness” first ap-peared in 2010 when Rev. Paul Hasselbeck updated the Unity textbook, Heart Centered Metaphysics: A Deeper Look at Unity Teachings, Unity has been teach-ing Oneness as a concept for more than 100 years. One of the fascinating experiences we have in Unity is that many of us have come from other faith traditions – and we bring our embedded theology with us. We unconsciously describe Unity principles and Unity teachings within our Bap-tist paradigm, our Catholic paradigm, or whatever the denomination of our for-mative years. Here are a few reasons to consider consciously moving to One-ness language: - In Unity it is held we are not separate from the Divine. There is One Power and One Presence and It is good. There are a number of descriptors for this, such as Spirit, All That is, Infinite Being, Source, Love, Life, Wisdom, Divine Mind, Princi-ple, and many more. - In Unity, it is long held that words are powerful; they have formative and crea-tive tendencies. - Language has changed over time. Much of Unity classic literature was written in a time when there was greater emphasis on the male gender. This is no longer an acceptable way to communicate. - Clarity was needed! Because language has changed so much over time, clas-sic Unity texts might sometimes seem as if they convey some traditionally held Christian ideas, but if one reads carefully, there are many untraditional notions. Oneness language clears up any misperceptions in this area. - The human mind is a creature of habit. Using a different type of language helps shift our thinking in the direction of upholding a consciousness of One-ness. - Some of those new to Unity were wounded by their church of origin, and cer-tain phrases can trigger old hurts. Oneness language has the potential to heal! For more about Oneness language you can read and study Heart Centered Metaphysics, also How to Pray Without Talking to God and Divine Audacity both by Rev. Linda Martella-Whitsett.
