    About the Author

The author was born in 1937, Bromley, when it was Kent not

another London suburb. Evacuated to Canada at 2, then he came

back to England at 4 . Ships were torpedoed in both directions

    but neither sank.

John attended Infant School, St. Olaves, New Eltham and then

Cannock House, Eltham. The Headmaster learned his mother was

a leading Spiritualist medium so nearly every time he walked

past him he would come out with the Gilbert and Sullivan song

My name is John Wellington Wells, I 'm a dealer in magic and

spells.'He was transferred from Cannock House to Dartford Technical

School on the headmaster's recommendation. So John started at

Tech, 2 years later than anyone else. Not easy as turning from

Classical Latin, etc. to Physics, Chemistry, Tech-drawing,

Woodwork, Metal-work, etc., 2 years late was hard work.

The author went into engineering design on leaving school as a

draughts-man. Designing power stations, oil rigs, ethylene plants,

breweries, distilleries, sewage plants, etc.The only book he produced at that stage was a design manual for

York International at Basildon (Industrial Refrigeration Division)

John believes it is still used. Draughting then was turning from

pencil and paper to computer so he had trouble finding work.

This English teacher at Dartford Tech rubbished all his essays, so

when the author was between jobs about 50 years after leaving

school, he thought I'll show him' and started writing his first

    book.

    Dedication

Robert Jarrett liked Hotab and wanted to know more about him,so this book is not exclusively about Hotab but he still has a lot to

    do here.

Also, Lilly Scarboro has again volunteered to type this book and

sort the spellings out for me.

Many thanks to both and all those others who demanded to know

    what came next.

    Chapter I

    Happy Birthday, Hotab

It was Hotabs birthday. Well it wasnt, but it was.

It was assumed that Hotab was about eight when Daisyhad found him sitting on a stump on that far off planet. It was

agreed that that day should be called his eighth birthday. On

that basis it was his fifteenth birthday and Hotab was veryhappy.

Daisy and Hotab had a little while earlier teleported Plumand Cherry into a very nice field. They didnt fancy Plum and

Cherry being left up on Broomstick with nobody to ridethem or give them the odd carrot or two. Broomstick was

officially UNITED NATIONS GENERATION SHIP No 1

but to everyone the ship was Broomstick.Hotab and Daisy had been on Mars nearly a month now

and were just beginning to think of it as home.

Hotab was thinking, This is my third home. I was on thatplanet nearly ten years. Then Broomstick was home for five,

now this planet called Mars is home.

Daisy reading his thoughts said, Yes, I think this will be

a good home, Hotab, but stop daydreaming and lets go for aride. These horses will be getting fat and lazy.

    Where shall we go, Daisy?

    11/13

    13

Well there is a rather nice dome about two domes away

from here. Its one of those very big ones and it has hills and

grass and trees and looks rather nice to explore.

Daisy teleported them all into the dome she had justdescribed. The horses didnt mind being teleported as they

were quite used to it and Hotab and Daisy thought goingthrough the tunnels which joined the domes and working the

airlocks when someone had closed them, was a waste of their

    time.

Riding across the hills and galloping along the flat valleys

was great fun and they spent a couple of hours doing just that.

Then Daisy turned to Hotab. Wed better take the horses

back now. We have somewhere else to be in a little while.

I thought as it is my birthday I had the whole day off.

Well this is a sort of surprise. Daisy wouldnt say any

more, and blanked her thoughts so that Hotab couldnt readher mind.

They took the horses back to their field, gave them a goodrub down and fed them a carrot or two. They patted the horsesgoodbye and Daisy said, Are you ready?

    Ready for what?

Wait and see. Here we go.

And they were now standing outside Mars University.

Why are we at the university?

I dont know, but I was told to bring you here and at

what time to do it. Lets go in and see what it isall about.

They went into the building and were directed into a largehall. The hall was filled with students in gowns and up on the

stage were all twelve of the Group who ran Mars Colony.

There was one of the Group calling out names one at a

time and as that person came up on to the stage, he or she was

handed a rolled and ribboned certificate and what it was forwas read out.

The names being called were all for engineering degrees.

Then it changed and the degrees were for Medicine.

Daisy and Hotab sitting near the back of the hall listened

while about a hundred students filed up to receive their

    degrees.

All of a sudden the list stopped and there was quite a longpause.

Then, Will Daisy Karri-Obotto and Hotab please stepup.

Hotab whispered to Daisy, We havent got those gown

    things.

Oh come on, Hotab, said Daisy impatiently.

As they got up to the stage, the person speaking said,Now we have two special awards to give. To Hotab we give

a PhD in Medical Science and research for his work in

producing the manual on the Senti Anatomy and also to DaisyKarri-Obotto and to Hotab for their joint work in producing

the tome on Human brain functions and neurology. Both theseworks are mammoth in size and detail and have also now been

published back on Earth and will become standard works inmedicine. These are your certificates and we would all like tothank you both for your work.

A huge cheer went up in the hall. Hotab turned to Daisy.

I didnt expect anything like that.

Nor did I, and anyway most of the work was yours,

    Hotab.

But I wouldnt have done it unless you had given me theidea.

The students started to file out of the hall and Daisy and

Hotab went to start following them when Rachel who tended

to be spokesperson for the Group called them back.

We were wondering what you two had planned out for

your lives. We know you have only been on Mars a short

while, but we have looked through copies of Broomstickslog books and you two seem to do extraordinarily well at

    anything you attempt.

We do like it here, replied Daisy. And we are

beginning to feel that Mars could be a nice place to call

    home.

But? queried Rachel. When we were coming back, we thought we might like

to join the Academy, put in Hotab, but when we got toMoon Orbital and those people had guns pointing at us, we

    left.

Yes that caused a real stir.

Well the Academy is on Earth so we are having second

thoughts.Did you know we have a branch of the Academy here on

    Mars?

Oh! put in Daisy. That could make a big difference.

What languages can you speak, Hotab?

Not very many, just English, French, Mandarin, Russian,Maori, Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Senti. I

havent had time to learn many more. You Humans have so

many. These were just the ones mostly used onBroomstick.

Good and I know you are both doing your medical

practicals. There were twelve of you from Broomstickchecking that last lot of colonists for any infections or other

    problems.

Yes we have to do the practical to get our doctorscertificates although Vuta was a little shy at first the way the

colonists stared at her and myself.

We understand that. Its the first time they would have

seen Senti people. I expect they also stared a bit at Greta,Gary, Henry and James, because they are so young to be

    doctors.

Well even the nine-year-olds have nearly got to the stageof finishing their witch doctor training, added Daisy.
