Troop 75 Spaghetti Dinner and Flags Collection

This month we are collecting your old flags for retirement. Last year we collected over 80 flags and retired them using a respectful ceremony during our February Campout. Hopefully, we will collect even more this year. We will be present at both the Narthex and rear entrance to the church during the next three Sundays. If you can’t make these times, just drop your flags off at the Church office during the week. We will also be selling new flags.

Spaghetti Dinner – To celebrate Scout Sunday on January 30, the Troop will be having a Spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings. We will hold the dinner in Fellowship Hall from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The cost of the ticket will be $7 for adults, $4 for children 7 — 12, and free for those 6 and under. Tickets can be purchased from our scouts collecting flags or in the Fellowship Hall during coffee time. If you don’t have tickets, you can pay at the door. This is a fundraiser to help our scouts pay for summer camp, so please plan to attend and enjoy the food and fellowship.

Wish you could get away on a mini-vacation? We’ve got the ticket! Mark your calendar for Friday evening, February 25 and Saturday, February 26!

Wonder Full World is an unforgettable travel-themed retreat the women of our church are doing together. We’ll “travel” to each of the seven continents. While there we will explore the wonders of a woman’s heart through worship, Bible Study, quiet reflection and laughter.

Reserve your place early by registering during fellowship time. Cost is $25 and includes all materials and plenty of delicious food.

Child care and scholarships are available.

Got photos? Share your photographs of your world travels with us as we decorate for the Wonder Full World Retreat where women will “travel” the world. Please bring photographs, with your name and contact information on the back if you’d like them returned, to the Wonder Full World Retreat table during Sunday fellowship time or turn them into the church office. Thank you for helping to make our retreat a success!

Tuesday Evening Small Group for Women 7:00 - 9:00 pm, HAC Parlor

Looking for a small community where you can connect with others and grow in your faith? We invite women of all ages to join our Evening Small Group for Women. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, January 25. Come get to know some great ladies and join in as we discuss some of our exciting plans for the next few months! On February 1, we will start a new bible study on David: Seeking a Heart Like His by Beth Moore. This 11 week study will delve into the theme "God will never give up on you". We will explore how David's life proves this promise to be true in this recently updated edition of Beth's earlier study A Heart Like His. In this examination of the “man after God's own heart,” David will delight and disappoint you. You'll want to be just like him at times and nothing like him at others. If you've ever experienced doubts, temptations, losses, family problems, or personal inconsistencies, this study is for you! For more information, contact Jennifer Anthony ([email protected] or 626-590-3814). To register for the bible study, contact the church office (776-8821, [email protected]) Child care is available by calling 776-2422 at least 24 hours in advance.

Capitol Campaign Continued from Page 1

Stewardship Campaign – Once per year, usually in the fall, we conduct this effort in order to receive estimates of giving toward our ministry (operating) budget for the next year. In 2010, this campaign was called Commitment to Christ, and we held our Commitment Sunday on December 5.

Capital Improvement Fund – In addition to gifts to the ministry (operating budget), we invite contributions to this ongoing fund, which provides for facility needs, such as furnaces, carpet, and paint.

Capital Campaign – This effort is conducted as needed for special projects, such as our proposed building renovation/construction. We have just begun our campaign Connecting in Faith, and you will receive more information during the next few weeks. We will receive pledges in February.

It’s that time of year again… Christmas decorations begin to find their way back into the closet, school starts back up again, and weekends are spent in front of the tube watching the NFL Playoffs! Which brings up two things for FUMC Youth — one we are getting closer to another amazing Super Bowl Party, and its time to start collecting food for the Flint Hills Breadbasket.

The youth have spoken and have again chosen to support the Flint Hills Breadbasket with all the canned and non-perishable foods they collect during this food drive. Collecting food and helping the homeless also

ties in well with the upcoming Spring Break mission trip to Chicago. The youth will be working with Red Line min ist r ies serving the homeless and learning about the problems our nation and the World face in battling poverty , homeles sness , hunger, and distribution of wealth/ resources.

Please be on the look out and have your food ready, as posters and collection boxes start going up around the church. Official food collection began on January 17, but there is nothing wrong with getting an early jump on things if you already have food for donations. Just bring in early drop offs to Nathan

Richard’s office in the basement of the Harris Activity Center. Last year the Youth Group gave a great donation to the Flint Hills Breadbasket, all thanks to the blessings and donations from our family here at FUMC. So please next time you run to the store pick up an extra canned food item and join our team in the Souper Bowl of Caring!

postponed till after the holidays, that did not stop the group from gathering for worship and fun. The Christmas lock-in was a great success, with an Elf eating contest, dodge ball forts, and a backwards scavenger hunt! After the lock-in the fun continued with trips to

the ice skating rink in city park and going to the movies to see the new Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The youth kept the fellowship flowing this holiday season with plenty of special holiday activities. Even though normal Wednesday youth group was

Over Martin Luther King weekend the youth traveled to Crested Butte Colorado for some fun, fellowship, and skiing. With 51 people from both Manhattan FUMC and Wamego FUMC we made our way through the mountains which turned out to be full of adventure. God completely blessed us and everyone had a blast.

A Big Thank You to all of the leader and parents who helped make this trip possible. You were a huge blessing to us all. I also want to especially thank Kayla Queen and Jennifer Bussmann who planned and prepared meals for us on the trip. Literally everything tasted great and they were also kind enough to help us take care of the kids who ended up getting a little sick.

Thanks Again!

Mission Moments

Mission Never Stops: 10-Fold Continues A few months ago, many United Methodists took the 10-Fold journey and experienced the challenges, hopes, and dreams of our global brothers and sisters.

There now are monthly project updates online so you can hear firsthand how the 10-Fold efforts are progressing. The work being done in Haiti—the accomplishments and challenges one year after the devastating earthquake—will be featured in January.

Fair Trade? Stop, and Shop in Coming Weeks

So what's Fair Trade? And, why are we, at First United Methodist Church, making wholesome, Fair Trade products available during Fellowship time each Sunday? According to a write-up in the January, 2011 issue of "Environmental Nutrition," a monthly newsletter for food and dietary professionals, the Fair Trade program supports fair wages for farmers, and promotes fair labor standards and pricing, environmentally-conscious sustainable agricultural methods, and social responsibility. Ag producers who abide by Fair Trade standards are guaranteed a fair price, and may earn a premium for community development and organic production. Some revenue from the sale of the products also helps to underwrite education about organic production and certification. More than 6,000 Fair Trade products are available each Sunday, during FUMC Fellowship time, high-quality coffees, teas, cocoa, chocolates and dried cranberries can be purchased. To learn more about Fair Trade products, plan now to check out Taste Tests being offered Sundays, February 6 and 13 during Fellowship time. As a promotion for the upcoming Valentine's holiday, FUMC volunteers will be providing complimentary gift-wrapping for coffees (such as "Love Buzz") and chocolate bars (while supplies lasts). The sale of Fair Trade products is a project of your FUMC Mission Team.

Amigos de Anapra Will Meet Tuesday, January 25 Come learn more about the mission school in Anapra, Mexico and how to get involved with this amazing ministry! Amigos de Anapra will meet on Tuesday, January 25 at 7:00 pm in the library. There will be a report on the work completed on the Thanksgiving trip and plans for winter/spring trips to complete construction of a new gymnasium building.

Looking to Serve on a Mission Trip in 2011?

If you are interested in helping on a construction mission trip there are two opportunities to put your faith into action this winter/spring. The Amigos de Anapra group is working on finishing up a project started this past November for a new gymnasium building at the Susanna Wesley School in Anapra, Mexico. A small group is heading down in late February to finish pouring concrete for the building. This trip will most likely be over a long weekend. A big team is needed to help over spring break (week of March 20) in erecting the building. There will be significant high work to do from scaffolding, ladders and on the roof, so most of the participants need to be comfortable with that. There will also need to be support people on the ground to roll scaffold, hand up material, etc. It should be emphasized that all will be required to bring and wear hard hats for this project. Exact travel dates will be decided by the team. If you have any interest in these trips or would like to know more about Amigos de Anapra, please contact Lynn Blecha or Eric and Jill Bernard [email protected]. Pastor Nancy can also connect you to this mission work.
