The Battle of Agincourt (p. 97)

One of the most famous battles of all time, the Battle of Agincourt, was fought on

St. Crispian’s Day, October 25, 1415, in Northern France. The battle was part of the

Hundred Years’ War, a series of conflicts between France and England that began in

1337 and ended in 1453.

This particular battle was between the army of King Henry V of England (1387-

1422) and that of King Charles VI of France (1368-1422). Before the battle, before

even the first arrow was shot, King Henry V gave a great speech that rallied his men

to fight. This speech was adapted by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) for his play

Henry V.

The battle is also remembered because the English, with many disadvantages,

were able to defeat the French. The exhausted English had been marching and

fighting for many days. When they arrived for the battle, the French had gathered a

large force so the English army was outnumbered three to one. Yet, the English Into Battle 9

were able to have a great victory over the French on French soil. But although people

like to think this was because the English were braver and fought harder, the battle was

mostly won by mud.

At a farmer’s field near Agincourt, where the two armies met, it had been raining for

a few weeks. The earth had been plowed and the mud was deep. Neither army wanted

to cross the field. The English held their position for four hours, waiting for the French to

do something. Finally, when the French started sending their servants for lunch, the

English shot arrows from their longbows which, as the name suggests, were able to

shoot long distances — much longer than the French army’s bows. The French became

angry and charged. Many French soldiers and their horses, all in armor, sank into the

mud. Then the English shot arrows at the horses. The horses threw the French soldiers

into the mud and they could not pull themselves out. Most soldiers drowned before they

could fight or were easily killed by the more mobile English soldiers in bare foot.
