PAST SIMPLE – TO BE • The affirmative form:

– I was in London in 1999.– Pam was in London in 1999, too.– We were together.– She was my girlfriend.

• The interrogative form– Were you in London last year?– Was Pam with you?– Were you together?

• The negative form– I wasn't in Paris in 1999. – Pam wasn't in Paris in 1999. – We weren't in Paris

There was / There were (Habia)

• The verb "be" is often used in the past tense with the word "there"

– Singular - There was...– Plural - There were...

• To make the negative, add "not" to "was" or "were"

• To make a question, put "was" or "were" before "there"

EXAMPLES• There was a lightning storm last night. (In this sentence,

"there" is used with the singular count noun, "storm.") • There were many things to do and see at the amusement

park. (In this sentence, "there" is used with the plural count noun, "things.")

• There was also a lot of food there. (In this sentence, "there" is used with the non count noun, "food.")

• There wasn't any furniture in the apartment. It was empty. • A: Was there a lot of food at the party? B: Yes, there was. • A: Were there a lot of people at the meeting?

B: No, there weren't. A: How many people were there? B: There were only four people.

The verb be is special. Never use DID NOT or DIDN’T with the verb BE. Instead, just use:

There are rules that tell us how to pronounce the -ed.

However,It’s a good idea for students to make a list of which –ed verbs have a “t” sound, which have a “d” sound, and which have an “id” sound.

And with practice, you can start to learn and memorize correct pronunciation.
