Story SeparationSeparates story from subject on front cover

Headline“How ‘X’ did better the Sam Smith, Coldplay and Paolo Nutini’s albums” is in bold and in black. The black in the ‘X’ is made to stand out as the album’s title. Black is made to match the colour on the album cover. The ‘3’ in “3 Page Read” is white so it stands out against the blue background.

MastheadThe denotation of the masthead is Music 4 the Mind and is above Ed Sheeran/Sam Smith’s head. The masthead is shown above his head so that he can be seen on the front cover.

Subject ShotConnotes that this is a close-up of Ed Sheeran, who is the artist from my survey that readers will want to see on the front cover.

Headline“When will his next No. 1 be?” is also in bold and black. Sam Smith’s name is in white and also bigger than the rest of the text because he is the subject on the front cover and the main feature in the magazine. The ‘5’ in “Page 5” is also bigger to show which page Sam Smith is featured in.

The colour scheme goes with the design because I said I would have it repeating throughout.

SloganThe denotation of the slogan for Music 4 the Mind is “Interesting Stuff About Music”.The verbal code “Interesting Stuff About Music” connotes that it contains interesting facts to do with music. Also connotes that it is informal in it’s language at times, mainly due to the Masthead name.

Facial ExpressionConnotes that Sam Smith is looking directly into the camera (during the photo-shoot) to address the reader and looking happy to denote that he is a singer of high profile and becoming one of the world’s best-selling artists

Step-by-Step SummaryDesigning the Front Cover

• The background colour is blue because I put together a survey on SurveyMonkey to choose what the right colour scheme would be and blue, along with black and white, emerged as the most popular choice. I’m happy with this shade of blue. The ruler tool is used to map out where the conventions are going to go.

Page 7: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Subject Effects

• The subject image was taken with my personal camera. I used the quick selection tool to remove the original background. I also noticed that the subject had acne so I also used the spot healing brush tool to remove them and suit my ideal design.

Page 8: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Masthead & Slogan

• My next move was creating the masthead for the magazine. The font is in Impact and the size is 100. The font is black, which is part of the colour scheme.

• The slogan is ‘Interesting Stuff About Music’, which is also black and in impact but size 20.

Page 9: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Headline• The headline is about Sam

Smith, with his name in white, Impact font and coloured white as part of the colour scheme and size 40. The statement main headline is placed next to the subject and quotes ‘When is his next No. 1?’ in black and in Calibri and size 50. Below it quotes ‘Page 5’ but the ‘Page’ part is in black and in Calibri font, white the ‘5’ is in white and in the Impact font.

Page 10: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Story Separation

• On the right are the separate stories in the magazine, reading out how many are shown. The title of that is ‘Bonus Features’, which is in white and in Impact. The other artist’s names are in Calibri in size 30 and are piled on top of each other but are all separated by a line in black of the same length.

Barcode & Social Media Promotion• At the bottom right is the

barcode which around it are the date, ‘5 Novenber-6 December’ on the left, and ‘Issue 1’ on the right, and the logos for Facebook and Twitter on top in the middle. This connotes that the magazine has a Facebook and Twitter page to go with it. Also featured is the website of the magazine above the barcode.

Puff Promotion

• The final feature I have placed into the front cover. It connotes three circles in blue, black and white, each one getting bigger moving out. It also quotes ‘Exclusive Posters Inside’ to feature as a free gift. The design of the promotion is based on the same feature as Q Magazine, one of the inspirations for my magazine.

Designing the DPS

My DPS started out as a plain white background. I inserted the rulers to line out the conventions in the DPS.

Page 14: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Subject Effect

• The subject was taken in two different shots. The first was a close-up where the background was removed and replaced with a light blue background for the colour scheme. The second shot is a mid-shot with no effects made to the image.

Page 15: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Article Titles

• The article’s title, ‘The Man Who… What exactly?’ connotes that it is a play on the title of the Travis album ‘The Man Who’. The second title ‘Did it always rain on you?’ is also used as a reference on the Travis song ‘Why Does It Always Rain on Me?’

Page 16: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

The Copy

• The copy starts with the first letter being bigger than the rest of the text. It is in Impact, in black and size 100. The rest of the text in Calibri, in black and size 14, similar to a normal interview in a magazine.

Page 17: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Puff Promotion

• A piece of promotion at the bottom right of the DPS, promoting Travis’ latest album. The font is also in impact, in black and size 45 to suit the space in the space.

• Next to the text, the album cover for Where You Stand.

Page 18: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Page numbers, website links and date of magazine publication

• At the bottom of the DPS, the page numbers (8 and 9) on the corners in Impact, size 20 each, along with the website link (www.music4mind.com) on both pages and the publication on the right page, in between the website link and page number, all in Impact and size 20.

Corrections and Improvements

• I received a message from the publisher asking me to make certain changes to both my front cover and DPS, which I followed thoroughly.

Page 20: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Front Cover Final Draft

The blue background on the front cover was given a gradient to make it appear more sophisticated

The headline text was made bigger, bolder and spread out.

The subject on the front cover was shaded into black and white and re-shot to the extent Q Magazine would have.

The barcode was updated to have more details, such as the issue number, website address, Bauer logo, date of publication, price and a smaller version of the logo

The cover stories were given more detail by having straplines added to them underneath.

The logo was placed in a white box and the strapline is now ‘The Definitive Music Magazine’

The puff promotion was moved to the top of the front cover.

Page 21: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

DPS Final Draft

The blue background on the front cover was given a gradient to make it appear more sophisticated

The subject was completed changed to match the front cover storyline

The iTunes promotion was changed to one of Sam Smith’s albums

The interview was completely changed to make it look like I was interviewing Sam Smith

This was a new feature added to match Q Magazine’s ‘Month in Music’ pages

Page 22: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Front Cover Step-by-Step changes

• I started off by replacing the original subject, Thomas McEnaney, with a more mature looking image of Johnny Sheehan and made it black and white.

• To look more sophisticated, I changed the light blue background to having a blue gradient.

• The headline and strapline was moved to the bottom, made bigger and stretched out to fill the perimeter of the magazine.

• I also moved the puff promotion and barcode to different places.

• The cover stories were also given straplines underneath the names of those who were featured.

Page 23: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

DPS Step-by-Step changes• I started off by removing all traces of the original

interview, apart from the page numbers, website addresses and iTunes logo.

• I changed the white background to a blue gradient.• I added my Johnny Sheehan images in the places

where the original Matteo Villacci images in the original version.

• I got the interview from digitalspy.com and placed it in the same style I had before.

• The first letter was done differently by being placed in a black box and coloured white to indicate where the interview began.

Page 24: Unit 30 - LO 3 - Be able to produce materials for an original uk-based media product

Conclusion

• The improvements I have made have made an impact because my magazine looks like Q, which will be its rival in sales. I was originally told the front cover looked like a student profile but a lot of tweaking made it appear as a sophisticated-looking product.

• The DPS was also given a lot of changes to appear as a professionally-constructed interview that may keep readers fascinated by what they read.
