TermsTerrorism: the systematic use of violence by a group in order to intimidate a population or coerce a government into granting its demands (Rubenstein, Unit 3 & 4). State: a politically organized territory with a permanent population, a defined territory, and a government. To be a state, an entity must be recognized as such by other states (Fouberg, Unit 4). Nation: a group of people who think of themselves as one based on a sense of shared culture and history, and who seek some degree of political-territorial autonomy (Fouberg, Unit 4).Stateless NationStateless nation: A group of people with a shared identity (nation), but do not have control over a piece of land nor is it recognized as a state. (Unit 4) Kurdistan is one of the largest stateless nations and is spread over six states.A nation like Kurdistan retains its culture, or at least tries to.

IslamIslam: the youngest of the major world religions, based on the teaching Muhammad, born in Mecca in 571 CE (Fouberg, Unit 3). Sunnis: Adherents to the largest branch Islam, called the orthodox or traditionalist. They believe in the effectiveness of family and community in the solution of lifes problems and different accepting traditions of Muhammad as authoritative. Also known as Shiahs, the Shiites represent the Persian (Iranian) variation of Islam and believe in the infallibility and divine right to authority of the Imams, descendants of Ali (Fouberg, Unit 3). Intrafaith boundaries: boundaries within a single major faith (Fouberg, Unit 3)Interfaith boundaries: boundaries between major faiths (Fouberg, Unit 3) Religion Sect: A relatively small group that has broken away from an established denomination (Rubeinstein, Unit 3). Religious fundamentalism: Religious movement whose objectives are to return to the foundation of the faith and to influence state policy (Fouberg, Unit 3).Religious extremism: religious fundamentalism carried to the point of violence (Fouberg, Unit 3). Jihad: a doctrine within Islam. Commonly translated as Holy War, jihad represents either a personal or collective struggle on the part of Muslims to live up to the religious standards set by the Quran. (Fouberg, Unit 3)

RefugeesRefugees: People who have fled their country because of political persecution and seek asylum in another country. France has had a fairly large Muslim population, even prior to this point because of chain migration with kinship links. This relationship is based off of colonialism or rule by an autonomous power over a subordinate and alien people and place and colonization which is physical process whereby the colonizer takes over another place, putting its own government in charge. France had some regions that were Muslim, like Algeria.
