Denise and Keith are college students who have been dating for a long time. Denise likes Keith very much, but recently he’s been a bit cool and distant. He used to call her every evening, but it’s been a week since he called last time. Today on campus, she saw him having lunch with another female student. Keith was touching this girl’s hands a lot and making her laugh. Denise feels hurt and confused. Just weeks ago, Keith told Denise he loved her. That was the happiest day in her life. Today is undoubtedly the most miserable.

Denise talks to her best friend Christine about the situation

• Christine: I always thought there was something fishy about Keith. He just didn’t seem sincere.

• Denise: Don’t say that, Christine. There has to be a reasonable explanation for what he was doing with that girl.

• Christine: Yeah? Like what?• Denise: Like, maybe she’s his cousin or something. Or

maybe they’re old friends.• Christine: Oh, they’re friends, all right. Very good friends! I

wonder if he’s told her that he loves her yet.
