•Make a list of everything you know about oceans (not ocean life, we’ll get to that later)

Key Vocabulary

• Continent: One of seven great landmasses on Earth

• Hemisphere: a region of the Earth either north or south of the

equator

The 5 Major Ocean

1. Pacific: • the largest ocean in the world, covering about 1/3 of the earth’s surface• It contains more than ½ of Earth’s saltwater (almost as much as Atlantic and Indian

Combined)• Ave. Depth: 13,215ft (deepest ocean)

2. Atlantic: • 2nd largest, covers almost 1/5th of earth’s surface• Ave. Depth: 12,880ft • 90% of fish caught for food is from the Atlantic

3. Indian:• 3rd largest ocean• Ave. Depth: 13,002 ft (deepest pt at 24,441ft)

The 5 Major Ocean

4. Arctic: • Smallest and shallowest Ocean• Ave. Depth of 3,953ft (max depth = 17,880ft)• Only ocean surrounded almost completely by land

5. Southern:• Recognized as the 5th ocean in 2000• Ocean bordering Antarctica (at 60 degrees S latitude)• 4th largest ocean

• Earth is 71% Water

• How much of this is fresh water?

• How much of that fresh water is available for us to use?

Fresh Water on Earth• Earth is covered in 71% water

• This includes frozen water, ground water, water in the atmosphere, water in the biosphere (plants, animals, etc), lakes, rivers, etc.

• Only 3% of water on Earth is fresh water• This includes water in lakes, rivers, ground water, etc

• Of that 3% of water, only an extremely small portion is available for us to use
