Unit 20Other Types of Meals: Potluck

A potluck is a gathering of people where each person isexpected to bring a dish of food to be shared among the group. It isoften organized by religious or communitygroups, since it simplifiesthe meal planning and distributes the costs among the participants. The only traditional rule is that each dish be large enough to beshared among a good portion (but not necessarily all) of theanticipated guests. In some cases, each participant agrees ahead oftime to bring a single course, and the result is a multi-course meal.ariations!

    - Safari supper, where a group of neighbours physically mo"ebetween different houses for each part of the meal. Typically, thisin"ol"es the preparation of one course only, and "isiting differentneighbours for the other # courses. Although it is a little difficult toexplain, and does re$uire careful and complex planning, the idea isrelati"ely straightforward! for example, %eighbour A ma&es a starter, and is "isited by %eighbours ' and . After this, %eighbour A mo"esto a different house, %eighbour , and is *oined by %eighbour +.

%eighbours ' and go on to different houses also, but not the sameone. inally, a similar pattern for dessert! %eighbour A mo"es to%eighbour s house, *oined by %eighbour . This style of eating hasrecently become popular as a charity fund raiser in rural 'ritain, andis a good way of meeting different neighbours in the community.

    - Rotameal, where participants ta&e turns pro"iding food forthe entire group, rather than each participant bringing a dish. orregular meals with a fairly consistent set of participants, thisdramatically reduces the amount of preparation effort re$uired.

    - Travelling dinner(orprogressive supper). +ach course of ameal is ser"ed at different homes. or example, the appetizer isser"ed in the first home, the entr/e in the second home, and the

dessert in the last home. The number of courses "aries depending onthe number of guests. A constraining factor of the tra"elling potluc& isrin&ing and ri"ing. roups ha"e opted to manage this by limitingthe guest list to neighbours within wal&ing distance, a designateddri"er, or limiting alcohol consumption.
