Unit 2 Studio Arts: Digital, Mixed Media & Photography

Unit 2: Design exploration and concepts

Area of Study 1:Design explorationThis area of study focuses on developing artworks through an individual designprocess based on visual research and inquiry. You will explore ideas and sources ofinspiration and then experiment with materials and techniques, practise skills anduse art elements including line, tone, shape, colour, texture and other elements suchas sound and light, to produce particular aesthetic qualities. You will need togenerate a range of directions (ideas for artworks) and analyse and evaluate thesebefore the production of artworks.

Assessment task for Outcome 1 is:! a folio including design explorations

and artworks.

Assessment tasks for Outcome 2 are:! an extended response;! short-answer responses.

VISUAL DIARY / FOLIOThis term you can choose to create a digital visual diary instead of a paper version. You cancreate a website version ( weebly.com is recommended as you can work on it at school asits not blocked). It still needs to have all your test works, screen grabs and annotations in it

but you may nd it easier as nothing needs to be printed out (except nal works at the endif they are meant to be printed works). No matter what version you use, you will still need totake lots of images that show you working on your art process to prove it is your own work, you will also need to do a lot more artist research, collecting images and articles that are ofinterest to your own art practice. It is vital that your visual diary is kept up to date and isfully annotated every lesson. $

GENERAL STUDY AND PREPARATION ADVICEWords of wisdom…

Take lots of photos, all the time, while you are working on your painting or drawing to

show the progress. Take screen grabs (mac: command + shift + 3) if you are workingon photoshop etc. Document your photography setups or locations if taking

photographs - and take lots of photographs too! (I can’t emphasise this one enough!)

Keep up your visual diary. Sometimes students neglect it, thinking they can nish it off

days before it is due. The idea of the visual diary is to document your progress,

validate and authenticate your work, and show how your ideas and skills are evolving.

You can’t do this the night before it is due in! Add to it regularly. If you can’t do that,

then at least scribble down what you did at the end of a week or lesson, quickly

evaluating your work efforts whilst it is still fresh in your memory. At least then you can

elaborate upon it soon after without forgetting what you thought and did.

Complete homework and class work on time – don’t fall behind. Just like the visual

diary, do all small theory tasks on time.

Look at artworks by famous or signicant artists. Don’t just Google! Look at art books

and visit galleries. See me for advice to nd the themes you like.

When working on your practical things in the classroom, save everything you did andlabel it, to show later on your progress in the visual diary. Then make sure it is clearly

labelled and explained in the visual diary.

Take note of the advice your teacher gives you and act on it – they know what they are

talking about!

Use your study periods, lunchtimes or after school to make the most of the Art room

and darkroom.

Do discuss your work with others – their ideas may help you develop your own.

Make the most of every opportunity!

TasksThis is your chance to create works based on any theme you wish! You will need to research artistsand inuences of your choice and create studies using a variety of mediums before starting on a

series of nal works. You need to work in a 2D medium and you may also wish to create a 3Dsculptural form as part of exploring your theme. All works and ideas need to be documented in yourvisual diary. You are required to create 4 nal pieces of work. $ Inspiration and Ideas

1. Identify a theme or idea you wish explore - this will be the basis of all your works in this Unit. Inorder to start germinating ideas create a mind map of you ideas and inspirations. $

2. Create a brainstorm of the mediums / materials you plan / would like to use. $

3. Create a moodbaord of imagery that inspires you and includes artworks by others that uses the

same materials / techniques that you want to use. $

4. Research 3 artists who work is of interest to you at this stage. Which other artists have, or are, working on similar issues / ideas to your own? Perhaps their themes are di %erent but they waythey use mediums and materials is of interest to you. Collect images of their work and annotate it- point out what it is about their work that is important to you. Identify samples of their work thatis relevant and include them in your research. Ensure you label works correctly including title of

work, year created, media used, size of the work and of course, the artists name. Ensure it isreally clear in your visual diary which images are of your own work and which are by others. $

5. You now need to write an EXPLORATION PROPOSAL. This document explains the artworks thatyou plan to make: what your idea is about, what has inspired you, other artists who are workingwith similar ideas or mediums and how they have inuenced you. You need to then discuss whatkind of artworks you think you will end up making and how you will go about doing so. Lastlyyou will write a sentence or two about how you plan to nish and present your artwork. $

The Exploration Proposal in detail…

Potential SolutionsYou will explore your chosen theme via a number of di %erent materials and techniques. For example

if you are working digitally this may mean you use di %erent software programmes to create works -you might use photoshop for some ideas, and then explore using iPad apps for another idea. If youprefer traditional materials you may choose to explore your theme via lino cut printing, a paintingusing acrylic, and charcoal/chalk pastels. There are endless options and you could use both digitaland traditional methods to explore your theme. Photography students could explore a number ofdi%erent darkroom techniques such as photograms, pinhole /sunprints, 35mm lm etc or they couldtry digital methods use di %erent photoshop techniques. $

You will work on your idea as three separate ‘potential solutions’ so you can explore di %erentmediums. $

Start by having a heading, Potential Solution #1, and then explore your idea via a particularmedium. You need to show sketches, computer generated images, screen grabs, that show how youare developing your idea. If you were doing a lino print for example, you would show the initialsketches of what your lino print might look like, renement of the design, images of you carving the

lino, and then multiple test linoprints exploring di %erentcolour ways, printing surfacesand then an image of the nalprint. All these stages will also

have reections written in yourvisual diary about how theprocess is going. Test works, models, paintings etc need tobe handed in as part of theassessment. You should alsokeep researching ideas, artistsand materials that may help tofurther inform your own workas you go. Document things

you nd in your visual diary as you go. You might nd articles, websites, gallery visits etc that areuseful - include these in your visual diary and annotate (explain) why you have included them. Whatis it about the document that wasuseful or interesting to you inrelation to your work? $

Continue working through youridea using other mediums /techniques under the headingPotential Solution #2, andPotential Solution #3. Use theinstructions above and workthrough your idea in the sameway. $ Finished WorksYou need to create 4 nal piecesof work. These can be from thesame Potential Solution or from

di %erent potential solutions.Your work might evolve to be a

combination of two potentialsolutions that work bettertogether. Your works should beall about your chosen theme. Ifyou are doing very largepaintings for example, 4 nalpaintings will count as 4 nalworks. If you were doing muchsmaller works or photographsfor example, then you might

have a series of images thatwould count as one nal piece.
