Unit title
Unit 2 Objectives:
• Add, subtract, and multiply monomials and polynomials.
• Multiply and divide monomial expressions with a common base, using the properties of exponents Note: Use integral exponents only.
• Identify and factor the difference of two perfect squares.
• Factor algebraic expressions completely, including trinomials with a lead coefficient of one or more (after factoring a GCF).
• Understand the difference and connection between roots of a quadratic equation and factors of a quadratic expression.
• Analyze and solve verbal problems that involve quadratic equations.

Definition of a Polynomial
Students can add and subtract monomials and polynomials and determine the degree of a polynomial.
A polynomial is made up of terms that are only added, subtracted or multiplied.
A polynomial can not have a variable in a denominator.
What is a polynomial???

Types of Polynomials
A polynomial with 3 terms is called a trinomial.
Monomial = polynomial with 1 termBinomial = polynomial with 2 terms
There is also a quadrinomial (4 terms)& a quintinomial (5 terms) but we rarely
use these words.
Students can add and subtract monomials and polynomials and determine the degree of a polynomial.

Degree
The degree of this trinomial is 3.
The degree of this trinomial is 4.
The degree of a polynomial with only one variable is the largest exponent of that variable.
If the polynomial has more than one variable, you need to look at each term. You find the degree of the polynomial by adding the exponents of each term and naming the largest power.
Students can add and subtract monomials and polynomials and determine the degree of a polynomial.

Standard form
The standard form of a polynomial is when the expression is listed in order from highest degree to
lowest degree.
Arrange the following in standard form:1. 4x2 ‐ 2x + 3 ‐ 5x3
2. ‐1 + x3 ‐ 9x2 + 8x
Students can add and subtract monomials and polynomials and determine the degree of a polynomial.
