• Animals and plants living in different places • Taking care of the environment

Skills you will learn: • Observing. • Estimating. • Data collecting.

Animals and plants living in different places. Activity: Guess the animal One of you should choose an animal - don’t tell the rest of the group –keep it in your mind! Give your class members clues to help them identify which animal you chose. Here is an example Can you guess which animal:

• It lives in the sea and land • It swims very well • It eats fish • Its skin is very smooth • When it is young it is white! And then becomes grey

when bigger!

Activity 1: Your teacher will show you models of different animals. You can put the animals on the correct paper with the photo of the habitat you think they live in! Activity 2

1- Look at the following 5 animals below! 2- Discuss and describe the place where each

of these animals lives.

Materials: • Different animal toys (camel, lion, polar bear, frog, fish) • Pictures of different habitats

Process Skills: • Observing • Sorting and classifying

A habitat is a place where a living thing lives and has its needs fulfilled. For example, getting shelter, food, water, and companionship. Different living things require different habitats according to

their needs.

What is a habitat?

Look at the pictures on this page – talk to your partner and tell them where the animals live and describe it.

After you talk about all the animals, think about which animals live in the same habitat!

There are large habitats and small habitats. In fact, nearly every part of the world is a habitat for something. Habitats can be divided into two main habitats LAND HABITATS & WATER HABITATS Write below – if it is a LAND or WATER habitat under the picture.

There are several different land habitats:

A grassland is a dry place with a lot of grass, and has very few trees.

Desert – this is our local environment! And we will look at this in a bit more detail. What is a plant? What is an animal? Can you think of different plants and animals that live in the desert? Make a list below and draw what you think it looks like: Plants Animals

The desert is an extremely hot place. It is sunny and dry during the day and cold at night. There is sand all around. There are not many green plants in the desert because it gets very little rain. People who live in the desert get water from the wells.

Page 10: Unit 1L.3: Habitats - Science Curriculum Office welcomes you · PDF file · 2011-10-012011-10-01 · melts and flowers grow. 17 Life science Grade 1, Unit 1L.3 Habitats Activity 1:

Plants in the desert

1.5.1

The desert habitat has very little rain fall. There are very few green plants that have leaves and flowers. We can see wild thorny bushes in some deserts. Desert plants like cacti store water in them during the rain fall and use it later. We see date palm trees in areas where some water has collected.

Animals in the desert

1.5.1

Most of the animals found in the desert come out night, why do you think they do that? For example lizards, snakes scorpion and ants. Most of them get water from the food they catch Living things need water!

Let’s focus on an animal you must have seen! Some of you may have touched or even ridden it! The Camel – The ship of the desert

قَتلخ فونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَينظُرأَفَلَا ي Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? (Al-Ghashiya/17) Ask yourself..and dicuss with your teacher!! Why does a camel have a hump? Why does it have such wide feet? Why do camels have long eye lashes?

1.5.1

A Camel is also called the ship of the desert because it can walk in the desert for many days without food and water. It has a hump on its back. Whenever it gets the chance to drink water or eat it stores the extra energy, for times when it can’t find food or water.

Life in a forest

1.5.1

Forests are warm, rainy, and wet. There are a lot of tall trees and thick plants in the forest because there is a lot of rain. The trees and plants are the food and shelter for many animals. Forests are the homes for many wild animals ranging from big animals like elephants and tigers to small birds like parrots and sparrows.

Discuss the following questions! 1. What makes a forest different

to the desert?

2. Here are some pictures of animals (on the right) that live in the forest – do you know what they are called?

3. Can you think of other animals

that live in the forest?

4. Do you think you could live in a forest? Why?

Life in the Polar Regions - your teacher will show you where the north and south poles are on a model globe like this

1.5.1

The Polar Regions are the North and South poles. The weather in the poles is very cold, windy and snowy. In winters the plants die. In the summer some ice melts and flowers grow.

Everything needs to be taken care of! Your teacher has brought in a goldfish Think about the following: What does the fish eat? Where do other fish like sharks live? What do you think we should do to keep the fish alive?

Draw a picture of the fish here:

Below write one sentences about the fish...for example, what shape it is, what colour it is, how many eyes it has, where it lives, what it eats, etc..

Taking care of your Environment

1.5.1

We should take care of the environment and keep it clean. If we will keep our surroundings clean then there will be less germs and diseases and we will be healthy. We should try to follow the do’s and don’ts for keeping the environment healthy and green. Only then our Earth will be happy.

Discuss with your teacher: How do you look after your

environment?!

Page 23: Unit 1L.3: Habitats - Science Curriculum Office welcomes you · PDF file · 2011-10-012011-10-01 · melts and flowers grow. 17 Life science Grade 1, Unit 1L.3 Habitats Activity 1:

23

Life science

Grade 1, Unit 1L.3 Habitats

The do’s:

1. We should plant more trees.

2. We should clean the beaches regularly.

3. We should throw all rubbish in the bin.

4. We should try to recycle our waste as much as possible

Page 24: Unit 1L.3: Habitats - Science Curriculum Office welcomes you · PDF file · 2011-10-012011-10-01 · melts and flowers grow. 17 Life science Grade 1, Unit 1L.3 Habitats Activity 1:

24

Life science

Grade 1, Unit 1L.3 Habitats

The don’ts:

1. We should not cut down trees as they are the homes for birds and small animals.

2. We should not throw the litter as it makes our environment dirty and spread the germs.

3. We should not throw our litter especially in areas like the beach!

What do you think about the following pictures?

We need to look after plants and animals because:

• Islam teaches us to respect the environment • They play a role in keeping things balanced in the planet • Some are food for other animals.

When we look after the natural environment around us, protect and make sure it is not being damaged we call it

CONSERVATION

Discuss with your teacher what you see in the pictures.

• What is it? • What has

happened? • Is it

damaging to the environment

• What is effected by this damage?

Is it shady, sunny, damp, dry? Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation in Qatar you can see many animals in their habitats!
