UNIT 1The states of matter and the changes of state
TAREAS (Tasks)
Task 1: Let's know the unit vocabulary
Activities
1.- Here is the vocabulary we are going to use in this unit. You have to look up the meaning of each word and write it down in this table. The words in bold are the basic unit vocabulary.

2.- Solve the word search and the crossword using the basic unit vocabulary
Task 2: The three states of matter
There are three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. The state of matter can change when the temperature changes.
Gases have the following properties:
• Gases are often invisible.• Gases don't have shape. • If we heat a liquid it changes to gas.• If we cool a gas it changes to liquid.
Liquids have the following properties:
• Liquids can flow easily.• Liquids change their shape depending on the container.• Their volume is always the same.• If we heat a liquid it changes to gas.• If we cool a liquid it changes to solid.• If we heat a solid it changes to liquid.• If we cool a gas it changes to liquid
Solids have the following properties:
• Solids don't flow like liquids.• Their volume is always the same.• If we heat a solid it changes to liquid.• If we cool a liquid it changes to solid.
Activities
1.- Watch the video and answer the questions.

2.- We are in the laboratory and the temperature is 20 ºC. Classify the following materials in solids, liquids and gases:
Coffee Paper sheetBread MilkOxigen SoapChalk Stapler
Perfume Orange juiceChewing gum Milk shake
3.- Here you are a list of properties about solids, liquids and gases. You have to find out the state that each property belongs to:
PROPERTY STATEThey are often invisibleThey don't have shapeThey can flow easilyIt changes to gas if we heat itTheir volume is always the sameIt changes to a liquid if we cool itThey change their shape depending on the containerIt changes to solid if cool itThey don't flow like liquids
Task 3: Changes of state
All matter can change from one state to another. We only have to add or to remove energy to change of state:
Changes of state happen when we reach certain points:

2.- Read this text and fill in the blanks using the list of words that you have below:
• Solids, liquids and gases are the three states of __________. • Materials can change from one state if we __________ or _________
energy.• If we heat a __________ , it changes to liquid. We call this change
__________.• If we heat a liquid, it changes to __________. We call this change __________.• If we cool a gas , it changes to __________. We call this change __________.• If we cool a liquid , it __________ to solid. We call this change __________.

Final task : Let's make a report!
Here is a table where you can find some substances with their boiling and freezing points. You have to choose one substance and make a report about it (the lab temperature is 20ºC).
SUBSTANCE FREEZING POINT º(C) BOILING POINT (ºC)
Iron (Hierro) 1539 2750
Copper (Cobre) 1083 2600
Aluminium (Aluminio) 660 2400
Lead (Plomo) 328 1750
Alcohol -114 78.3
Oil (Aceite) -5 400
Cobalt (Cobalto) 1495 2870
Clorhine (Cloro) -101 -135
Here is an example of the report:
Substance WATER
State LIQUID
Main Properties - Water can flow easily.- Water change its shape depending on the container.- Water volume is always the same.
The boiling point of WATER is
100ºC
The freezing point of WATER is
0 ºC
If we heat WATER up to 100ºC changes to vapour
If we cool WATER down to 0ºC changes to solid (ice)
