Today marks the end of Quarter 3 and with

the entry into the 4th quarter comes several

year-end meetings to plan for next year,

performances, activities and ceremonies.

We know it is also a busy time for families

as they plan for the upcoming long holiday

or maybe even a transition to another

country. We hope that you will find the time to attend

these events since they are often quite important in the lives

of our students.

One of these events that I hope to see you at is the last

meeting with me this year. Our final “Breakfast with the

HoS” will be on 07 May beginning at 0800 in the

Community Room. Please mark your calendars and plan to

attend this session. We will send out the finalized theme in

the coming weeks.

Respectfully,

Dr. Barder [email protected]

On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to

announce that Dr. Amie Pollack will be our

new Parent Elect Board member. Her

last Board meeting of the 2014-2015 School Year on 2nd

June 2015. Members of the Community are invited to meet

Amie at the SCO Meeting on 14th April at 8.30am in the

Personal Statement:

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce

myself. I am from the US and have lived in Vietnam for 5.5 years

with my husband, Todd, and children, Oliver (UNIS Hanoi Grade

2) and Julia (preschool). I am a clinical developmental psychologist on

the faculty of Vanderbilt University, USA. For the past 5.5 years

my work has focused on mental health research and training capacity

building in Vietnam and Cambodia. I work with universities to

develop post-graduate training programs in clinical psychology, support

the development of hospital and community-based mental health care,

and lead a number of research projects. Prior to moving to Vietnam I

held post-doctoral appointments at Harvard Medical School and

Boston University in the areas of trauma and community-based

I believe that my work experiences have prepared me well for being an

effective member of the UNIS Hanoi Board. As a researcher, I am

an objective, data-driven decision maker with a love of learning. As

an educator, I strongly believe that a peaceful, prosperous world begins

with quality childhood education. As a psychologist, I know that

growth of any kind is dependent on listening, understanding and

and emotional development will provide a valuable perspective to the

board. In my three years as a UNIS Hanoi parent I have gained a

great respect for the UNIS Hanoi faculty, values and vision. It would

be a pleasure and an honor to serve this school and community.

This Tuesday evening (April 7), parents and friends are

invited to participate in this year’s Grade 2 Slice of Ice

evening showcasing Dance, Song, Music, and Fine Art.

Hosted by the students themselves, and focused around the

Unit of Inquiry – Through the Eyes of the Artist, it is a

great way to celebrate student learning and achievement.

Parents, friends and students will meet at the canteen

by 5:45 pm. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with a

communal group dance outside by the canteen (weather

permitting). Then parents and students will follow students

leaders to explore two galleries; one containing the Plastic

Ocean studio work and the second, 4 different Art themes

explored during Visual Art class. Once the bell is rung

twice, it is time to go into the theatre and be treated to a

recorder performance and the Plastic Ocean Song

performed by all Grade 2 students.

We look forward to sharing this celebration with you.

The spring play, “The Complete Works of Shakespeare

(Abridged)” is being presented. Come watch and support

our fellow performers and backstage crews present

parodies of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” “Othello,”

“Macbeth,” “Julius Caesar” and many more in the form of

a rap song, a cooking show and many other ridiculous

spoofs. Shakespeare is not only for English classes!

* Please note: parental guidance is suggested.

Next Saturday, April 11 the UNIS Swim Team will have

their first spring competition. UNIS students from Level 6

and Swim Team will have a chance to race with the new

touchpads for the first time.

The meet will begin at 9:00am and should finish

before 12:00pm. Swimmers will be notified of the time

they need to arrive for warmup next week. It’s a great

opportunity for our swimmers to show how much they

have improved and learned since our last racing in

November.

Parents, friends, families and members of the UNIS

Community are invited to come out and watch some fun

racing.

Two of our SHC nurses went to the Hong Kong

International School on March 27-29, 2015 to attend the

International School Nurses of Asia (ISNA) conference.

They were joined by school nurses from 9 more Asian

countries. They all came together for one shared goal --

sharing best practices to help young people become

healthy, active learners in the school environment.

The 3 day conference touched on several topics notably on

brain development and sleep, eating disorders and Human

Papilloma Virus (HPV) and adolescents.

The impact of good sleep can never be overemphasized.

Good quality sleep is crucial for normal, healthy brain

function as human brain does not reach full maturity until

at least the mid-20s. Our children may look like a grown

up, but would still think like a kid. Thus it is important to

teach these kids the technique of avoidance, pausing and

using HEAD ( acknowledging Hormones, Exercise, Act it

out and Doze off) to to avoid foolish, impulsive decisions.

“Self-starvation” syndrome has spread to all socioeconomic

and ethnic backgrounds across Asia. Eating disorders don’t

discriminate gender nor age. Seeking help at the first

warning sign is much more effective than waiting until the

illness is in full swing. Evidence shows the sooner the

treatment starts, the shorter the recovery process will be.

Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in

females worldwide but the ranked first in South east Asia.

And almost all cervical Ca is caused by the HPV. With the

development of the vaccine against HPV, the risk of

developing HPV related cancers have decreased by up to

99%. And with the introduction of the Gardasil9 vaccine

(just approved in December 2014 in the USA), vaccine

efficacy will reach 100%.

It was great to touch base with other school nurses - to

reconnect and make new friends, share experiences,

concerns and compare notes on cases seen in the school

setting. It was very inspiring to be with people who share a

common interest: to ensure students health and wellness

needs are attended via a caring and holistic approach thus

reaching their full potential.
