I would like to thank those parents who

have been able to attend one or more of

the ES Principal candidate sessions. Your

participation is much appreciated and your

feedback will help inform us from the

parent vantage point. The ES Principal

Search Advisory Task Force meets on

Monday to collate all of the data to finalize the pros and

cons of each candidate. I will then make the decision later

in the week and as soon as the successful candidate accepts,

I will announce it to the community hopefully no later than

in next Friday’s Tin Tuc.

I would also like to thank those parents who were invited

to meet with our visitors from CIS/WASC/IB last week.

The visit is now complete and their report will be submitted

to their respective agencies by the end of December. The

agencies will then review the report in the January –

February time frame and we should anticipate hearing the

outcome shortly after TET.

Their preliminary findings were presented to a small group

of the faculty responsible for the self-study report. While

we will receive many commendations and some

recommendations, the best news is that they believe that

their commendations and recommendations will mirror our

self study and what we believe are the strengths and areas

to work on in our school. The statement was made “This

is a school that knows itself well.”

This is excellent news and is a tribute to all faculty, staff,

parents and students who contributed to the self-study. It

was clearly done in a thorough, transparent and fair manner

and it demonstrates that we are proud of our successes, but

also willing to take a hard look at areas in need of attention.

This is fully within the spirit of the “Good To Great”

approach that we embrace as an organizational ethos.

Kudos to Ms. Janet Field, our Director of Learning, and

her Steering Committee Co-Chairs, Tanya Arnold (HS

Counselor), Melanie Taylor (Grade 2), and Medeha Zahid

(MS Mathematics) for their leadership and guidance

throughout the year long process.

Respectfully,

Dr. Chip Barder, [email protected]

We appreciated the time community members took to

attend our meeting on the November 5th. The questions

and comments you raised both during the meeting and on

your meeting evaluation forms gave the Board and the

Head of School an opportunity to understand the issues

that are of particular interest to you.

We hope you can appreciate that it has taken us a little

while longer to respond to the broad range of questions

and comments presented. Please click here to read the

Board’s answers to strategic and policy questions and the

Head of School’s answers to operational concerns.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please

send them to the Board Assistant, Jennifer Sawyer, at

[email protected].

This and last week, the Project Management Services for

Phase 3A of UNIS Hanoi campus development Finalist

Interviews were conducted. The selection Advisory panel

consisted of Campus Development Task Force members

and staff members, including Scott Edwards, Pippa Wood,

Chris Rhoda, Linh Quach, Thango Vu, and Len Archer.

Each advisory panel member participated in the Interview

process and independently rated the candidates. At the

completion of the process, the team shared their ratings

and discussed candidates presentations and responses to

the questions asked and agreed upon the final ratings.

Following deliberation, the advisory panel unanimously

recommended a candidate to the Head of School and

Board of Directors for the provision of Project

Management Services. This past Tuesday evening, the

Board of Directors approved the Terms of Reference for

and cost to hire the project management firm who will

begin their contract in January 2015. Further details will be

announced once contract arrangements have been

finalized.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the

selection criteria process, please contact the Director of

Finance and Operations, Len Archer,

at [email protected].

Best regards,

Ms Nandini Oomman, Acting Board Chair

ES Students have been extremely busy over

the past two weeks acting as ambassadors

for the Elementary School. A group of ten

Student Council representatives (a boy and

a girl from each of the Grades 1 through 5)

formed a panel to interview the three ES

Principal candidates in the main B7 conference room.

They generated their own questions and devised their own

evaluation criteria for use after meeting with each candidate

for 30 minutes. They certainly served brilliantly as the voice

of the student body in this very important selection process

and were very proud to have been involved.

Congratulations to Lyla and Ben (G5), Daisy and Duc

(G4), Augusta and NuRi (G3), Kalin and Elsa (G2)

and Avik and Noi (G1) for their very professional and

mature approach.

A second group of Student Counsellors was convened to

meet with the Accreditation Visiting Team last week. Four

children from Grade 5 (Hannah, Bill, Michael and Ji Ah)

were joined by Peer and Trang from Grade 4 and Alex and

Elena from Grade 3 to answer questions about the school

in general and the PYP in particular. The Visitors

commented on their confidence levels and ability to

articulate their knowledge and understanding. The children

came back exhilarated by their conversation and happy to

have been able to represent their peer group.

Our final thanks and congratulations go to Ben in Grade 2

and Rebecca in Grade 5 who were chosen to lead the

Visitors on a tour of the Elementary School on their first

day. They did a great job of orienting the team members

and answering questions while keeping to a tight time

frame.

As educators we feel privileged to work with the children at

UNIS Hanoi on a daily basis and these are just some

examples of the challenges our students can rise to when

asked.

As the winter break draws near, I would like to take the

opportunity to thank parents for working so closely with us

in order to support student learning. There have been

several opportunities for parents to become engaged with

what is happening at UNIS Hanoi over the last few

months, including parent workshops, conferences and the

learning journey as well as Arts celebrations.

I would also just like to remind parents that we ask that

children and teachers are not disturbed during learning time

in the school day. You may remember I sent out a

reminder that any parent or helper needing to bring

something to school for a child should go to the ES offices

to deliver the message or item, NOT to the classrooms,

and the office staff will ensure that the child receives what

they need during an appropriate break in lessons. For the

sake of uninterrupted learning, we ask that everyone

continue to adhere to this policy and practice.

Warm regards,

Carole Denny, [email protected]

"Creating opportunities to transform futures"

The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme was launched to

celebrate the School's 25th Birthday.

Our Scholars describe their experience at UNIS Hanoi as

the turning point in their lives or the shattering of a shell to

release their potential. We want to create more

opportunities to transform more futures.

Our goal is to raise $2.5 Million USD over the next five

years to create three new Scholarships in perpetuity.

Six week campaign – Between Winter Break to Tet

Break

Every family in our community will receive a personal

invitation to make a gift with clear payment options

All faculty and staff will be invited to participate and

make a gift

Every alumni family will be invited to participate and

make a gift

Gifts can be split into multiple payments

Families can pledge their gifts for 1-5 years

More than one gift can be made

Families or individuals may choose to donate

anonymously

NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL! This campaign is about

achieving our goal TOGETHER at all levels of gifts

from $1 to $+10,000.

(Watch the film - click above)

Our Annual Campaign for The Scholarship Fund is about

what we can achieve when we all work together as a

community.

We hope that every family will make a contribution.

We hope that every teacher and staff member will

make a gift.

We hope that all our alumni families will join us and make a

donation.

Our goal is to have 100% of our families, faculty, staff and

alumni make a gift to The Scholarship Fund.

We hope to receive a range of gifts from 1 USD to

+10,000 USD and every gift will help us achieve our goal

together. Each family, each individual member of our

community can make a difference.

We can reach our first annual goal, If EVERY family made

a gift of 105 USD!

Imagine what we can achieve together! The Annual

Campaign is about a community sharing a vision and

everyone making their own contribution, at their own level,

to achieve that goal.

Only you can decide what is the right level gift for you.

We welcome gifts from companies and we will be

developing a special recognition package.

We will be actively seeking investment from companies as

we build our campaign over the next five years.

Please contact our Director of Advancement, Emma

Silva , if you would like to make a connection to The

Scholarship Fund for a corporate donation.

Page 6: UNIS Hanoi Tin Tuc _ Newsletter 16 vol 21 tt 05 dec

Our primary goal is to mobilize our own direct UNIS

Hanoi community.

However, we also accept gifts from those outside of our

School community who are inspired by the vision of our

Scholarship Programme and who want to contribute as a

Friend of the School.

We celebrate all gifts to The Scholarship Fund as

philanthropic acts of generosity.

The Hour of Code is a self-guided workshop that will help

students try out the basics of computer science. A variety

of hour-long tutorials will be available for students and

teachers to learn.

A team of students and teachers from MSHS and the ES

Coding Club will act as your guides during the session. Feel

free to ask them for assistance!

In Elementary, students from Grade 3-5 will be joining the

Coding Club and the rest of the world as they learn about

the basics of computer science.

ES Parents, you are invited! Please be in your child’s

classroom at 8:30am sharp. If you have any questions,

please email Miss Heidi at [email protected].

In MSHS, students from Grades 6-12 will participate in this

exciting event during their X-Block period. Please email

Miss Trebesch at [email protected] for more

information.

Visit the website Code.org for more details.

“ Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer...

because it teaches you how to think.” - Steve Jobs

Students who learn introductory computer science show

improved math scores.

90% of K-12 schools in the U.S. do not teach computer

science.

In many countries (including China, the United

Kingdom and Australia), computer science is - or soon

will be - required.

All students can learn the basics, starting in elementary

school, but fewer than 10% of students (and just 4% of

female students, 3% of students of colour) take

computer science classes

Some Grade 7 students were able to use the Projection

Room in the Library to speak this week, via Skype, with the

author of a book they had enjoyed reading. Tom Rogers, a

screenwriter for Disney and friend of MSHS teacher Lori

Key, was pleased to talk about his book, which is about a

boy who turns eleven on 9/11. Mr. Rogers answered

questions about how he came to write the book, as well as

about the writing process in general. The students are

hoping to have another chance to ask him more questions

in the new year.

Paul Swanson, MSHS Tech

Coordinator, facilitated the

technology part of the online

meeting and taped the session,

which can be viewed here.

As a UNIS Hanoi family you are offered a

wonderful opportunity to see first-hand

what a top tier international school has to

offer in terms of co-curricular

programming. There are many

international schools around the world, but

only the top schools are willing and able to

commit to dedicating the necessary resources to run a top

tier international school co-curricular program.

One of the key foundation pieces of our program here at

UNIS Hanoi is our affiliation with the Mekong River

International Schools Association (MRISA) and the Asia

Pacific Activities Conference (APAC). Our students are

afforded incredible opportunities through these two

organizations whether they are directly involved or not.

Any student accepting membership on a co-curricular

group with UNIS Hanoi must be aware of the hosting

responsibilities we accept as members of MRISA and

APAC, as well as our partnership with other international

schools around the world. When we host events that

require overnight stays, accommodation must be provided

for the visiting students. By accepting membership on a

UNIS Hanoi co-curricular group, our families agree to

support the programme by opening their homes and

accommodating our guests. In short – if you take part in

the programme, you must house visiting students

Considering the number of events that UNIS Hanoi hosts

each year, we also have to request support from other

members of our school community to help make sure all

our guests have a comfortable and safe place to stay for the

duration of the event. With the help of our UNIS Hanoi

families we hope to establish a long-standing tradition of

hospitality for our guests who will join us from our sister

schools around the world.

For those of you who are new to the concept of reciprocal

housing or billeting, the following summary may help you

understand what is involved and answer questions you may

have. It is important to completely understand what the

opportunity encompasses and what is expected.

Accommodation - Sleeping quarters for your guest(s).

Some Meals - This will primarily be breakfast each

morning and possibly two to three dinners. Most

participants will be at school or the event venue during

lunch time, and have an activity planned around dinner.

Laundry - The students may need to have their

uniforms washed on competition/performance days.

We would appreciate you helping them with this. If the

best way for you to do this is to show them how to use

the washer, that is fine.

Transportation - We ask that you pick up your guests at

the designated location specified in the Host Family

Packet which you will receive well in advance of your

guest arriving. For the duration of the event, we ask you

to provide transportation for visiting students between

your home and UNIS Hanoi. In some cases UNIS

Hanoi can help arrange bus transportation at a fixed pick

-up/drop-off location.

Supervision - At least one parent or responsible adult

should be present in the home while your guests are

staying with you.

How many visiting students am I expected to house?

Generally we prefer to put our guests up in pairs. When

two visiting students are together it makes the experience

more comfortable for the guests as well as the host family.

However, some of our UNIS Hanoi hosts take 4 to 6

guests at a time.

Do we need to give the students their own rooms or

can they share? It is appropriate to put two (or more)

students in a room together.

Will I have mixed gender guest (e.g. one boy and one

girl)? No, your assigned guest will be all of one gender.

Are cots, sleeping bags, or a mattress on the floor

acceptable? A bed is preferred, but cots, sleeping bags or a

mattress on the floor is acceptable. If students are on the

floor, there should be some form of cushioning under them

i.e. air mattress, floor mattress, etc. Please provide

appropriate bedding.

Page 11: UNIS Hanoi Tin Tuc _ Newsletter 16 vol 21 tt 05 dec

If the participants use a taxi, do we provide taxi

money? Transportation should be the responsibility of the

host family. If for some reason you can’t provide

transportation, please provide taxi fare or arrange for

alternate transportation. In some cases UNIS Hanoi can

help arrange bus transportation at a fixed pick-up/drop-off

location.

What are curfew calls and are they necessary? Calls

will be made to your home phone, not to a mobile, unless

your home has no land line. Please be prepared to receive

these phone calls at approximately 10:00pm each night.

Although this may seem inconvenient, we ask that you be

patient and understand that this procedure is taken

seriously by the chaperones and their schools as a way of

ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. You

can have your guests near the phone at curfew time so as to

cause minimum disturbance to you and your family.

What is meant by curfew violations? A curfew violation

occurs when a participant is not in the host family’s home

by the curfew time set up for that particular event. The

participants will be scheduled to be back to your homes

well before curfew, allowing them plenty of time to arrive

by the deadline. There should be no attempt to “cover”

for the students. If a chaperone calls and your guests are

not in, please tell the chaperone and they can either call

back or have the students call when they arrive. The

curfew time is very important to follow, and for safety

reasons will be strictly enforced. Also, please note that

there are no exceptions to the stated curfew times; curfew

will not be extended for anyone at any time.

If a student has broken the rules, whom do I call? If

there is anything happening that you question, please call

the Director of Activities, Mr. Tarique AL-Iesa at 0125

882-8672 immediately. Another appropriate action is to

communicate with the chaperone. Either way, the Director

of Activities should be informed. We do not want you to

have a negative experience in any way. A shared set of rules

and expectations will be included in the Host Family

Information Packet.

Do parents/guardians have to be at home during

housing? Please make sure that if you offer to house that

at least one parent/guardian is in Hanoi and available to act

as chaperone and emergency contact.

We understand that we are to provide breakfast, and

possibly dinner for the participants, but who pays if they

want to go out? If students want to go out for dinner, and

it is no problem for you, they pay their meal themselves.

Most visitors bring extra money for these situations. Only

official group dinners are allowed and the coach/

chaperone must be present with the entire group. Official

group dinners or other special trips for individual groups

during an event must be approved by and coordinated with

the event director, and clearly communicated to the host

family.

Tarique AL-Iesa, Director of Activities [email protected]

On January 28 to February 1 UNIS Hanoi will be hosting

the 2015 APAC Basketball Tournament. We will be

opening our community up to 120 visiting student-athletes

from around the region. All visiting students need to be

accommodated for the duration of their visit in homes of

our UNIS Hanoi community members.

This year, UNIS Hanoi had the honor of hosting the 2014

APAC Orchestra Festival from November 12th to 16th. Six

APAC schools including BISM, CA, CISS, HKIS, WAB,

and UNIS Hanoi participated in this three day music

festival. Together with all the participants, we practiced the

several music pieces for more than 24 hours in total in

order to perform an amazing concert on the last day of the

festival. We also had the opportunity to enjoy the famous

Vietnamese Water Puppet Show as a cultural visit.

During the rehearsal, we challenged ourselves and pushed

ourselves to our limits. The highlight of the event was the

concert held on Saturday evening, which was possible with

the effort of our guest conductor, Dr. Dan Perkins. The

pieces we played were very demanding, but I felt that our

effort was worth it when I heard the applause from the

audience. Not only did 2014 APAC Orchestra hone our

skills but also strengthened our friendships.

This year’s APAC choir group travelled to Shanghai

between the 12th to the 16th of November. The 13

travellers were treated to the expertise of Dr Jerry

Blackstone, a Grammy ® award winning conductor whom

is currently the Chair of the conducting department of the

School of Music at the University of Michigan. Our

students experienced repertoire that spanned many genres

and styles, from Gospel to Beethoven and were enriched

both musically and socially from this trip. Congratulations

on the success of our talented High School choir students

this year. They represented UNIS Hanoi with class and

determination.

"APAC Choir was one of the most exhausting, time consuming,

thought-provoking experiences I have ever had, and yet I would give

the world to re-live that moment." Laura Lan Anh Foster

On Saturday 29th November over 300 young soccer players

participated in the Autumn Seasons’ culminating

Tournament. The students had a wonderful time

showcasing their skills in the basking sunshine. All players,

parents and coaches upheld the recreational ethos of the

Saturday Soccer programme where enjoyment and

sportsmanship outweighs winning. Congratulations to all

participants on a very successful and enjoyable season.

I would also like to thank and very much acknowledge all

the great work put into the programme by our volunteer

coaches, Coach Coordinator (David Durance) and

Administrative Coordinator (Mukhayyo Burkhanova).

Without their time, effort and commitment this programme

would simply not exist.

Last weekend 48 members

of the UNIS Hanoi Phoenix

Swim Team travelled to

Phnom Penh to participate

in the ISPP Invitational

Swim Meet. Out of 10

teams, UNIS Hanoi placed

2nd. It was a very strong showing with some excellent

swims. The team spirit and sportsmanship our swimmers

showed during the meet and with their home stay families

was just as impressive. Team travel is an important

component of any team and the bonding that occurs is an

invaluable experience. The majority of swimmers attending

the meet were MS swimmers. With such a strong result, the

future looks bright for the UNIS Hanoi Swim Team!

In addition to hundreds of personal best times and huge

numbers of ribbons and medals won, UNIS Hanoi boasted

7 high point winners who each received a banner honoring

that achievement:

Girls 10-11 2nd - Grace Cenere

Boys 12-13 1st - Chinh Mai, 2nd Peter Park

Girls 12-13 1st - Uyen Trinh, 2nd Adelaide Charlier

Boys 14+ 1st - Duc Do, 2nd Andy Cole

The UNIS Hanoi swimmers also set 13 team records.

Record breakers include Cassie Hu Andersen, Grace

Cenere, Omaya Munro, Mina Mok, Uyen Trinh,

Adelaide Charlier, Chiaki Goto, Carlota Montalban

San Jose, Byung Hyun Park, Chinh Mai, Roope

Makela, Tat Anh Trinh, Jacob Gee, Manato Tsuda and

Duc Do.

Next up... APAC Swimming Championship in Shanghai

On Sunday, November 30, 2014 UNIS Hanoi hosted the

6th Annual Peter Goverde Memorial Tennis

Tournament. The event is set up to bring our tennis

community together in remembering Mr. Peter

Goverde. Peter brought a passion for tennis to our

community and passed it on to all who were fortunate

enough to know him. He loved to play the game and to

share it with everyone regardless of ability level.

The UNIS Hanoi tennis courts were busy from 7:30 a.m. to

4:30 p.m. with players of various age and skill levels

enjoying the wonderful opportunity to have fun and

compete. UNIS Hanoi Middle School students participated

in the morning event, and High School students

participated with the adults in the afternoon portion of the

event. There were winners and there were losers, but all had

a great time and enjoyed some healthy competition. We

look forward to seeing everyone back in greater numbers

for next year's event.

The final numbers are in and thanks to the generosity of

our community in donating their books, countless hours

from our amazing team of volunteers, and support of the

community in buying the pre-loved books, we were able to

raise $5186 for Room to Read's Girls Education Drive.

We hope that each and every person that donated a book,

or bought a book feels some ownership over the fact that

more girls will be able to go to school this year thanks to

their efforts. A few classes we would like to pay special

tribute to are our winning classes in ECC, ES & MS. The

winning classes all received, or will receive a brand new

book of their choice donated

from the

library. Congratulations

K1DV who collected 123

books, special mention to K2CA who was a close runner

up with 117 books. As mentioned last week 2TL were our

winners in ES with 439 books collected. There was

another close race in MS with 6JQ collecting 248 books,

closely followed by 6NC with 238 books.

Thank you for once again making this a great community

building event. We hope you enjoy your books!

Dear Parents,

The School Health Centre is seeing a very high number of

students with fever, diarrhea and or vomiting. The students

detail to the nurse that they were sick before coming to

school, but, “my mum or dad told me just to go to the

school Nurse.” Unfortunately, there is nothing we are able

to do except send your children home, but not before they

have passed their germs onto other students on the school

bus and in the classroom.

A look at the available research on this highlighted a recent

survey conducted by, Kids Health in the US, who asked

School Nurses, "What's the biggest health problem at

your school?” The answers are below:

parents sending sick kids and teens to school

"I think the biggest health problems occur because there

are parents who send their children to school knowing

they are sick."

Biggest problem is "Parents who send sick kids to school

(even with a fever) because 'they have to take a test.'"

What can parents do at UNIS Hanoi to help minimize

the cross infection risk to our students, staff and UNIS

community:

Keep your child at home if they have a fever of 38

degrees C / 100 degrees F and ensure your child stays at

home until at least 24 hours after a fever has broken

naturally, without fever-reducing medicines.

Ensure your child stays home for 24 hours after the last

episode of diarrhea and/or vomiting.

If your child is not feeling well in the morning, please

do not tell them to go to the school nurse for a

diagnosis.

When asked, “What are the most important thing

parents and teachers can do to help keep students

healthy during the school year?"

School nurses recommended hand washing using soap

and water or hand sanitizer.

Parents keeping sick children at home.

Many thanks for your ongoing support,
