You demonstrate a high level of professional proficiency. CLD is the only globally recognized evidence-based benchmark of performance for architectural lighting designers, making it a valuable addition to your existing qualifications and portfolio of work. Earning your CLD earns you international prestige and respect by demonstrating you have a proven track record meeting high standards of professional practice.

You stand apart from your competitors. The CLD highlights your professional status in the eyes of peers, managers, design team colleagues, legislators, and the general public. And the fact that you will be among the first lighting designers in the world to earn this new certification makes your achievement even more noteworthy.

You’re investing in your success. The CLD validates your ability to operate as a lead architectural designer, developing, guiding, and completing lighting design projects in a professional and proficient manner. It helps attract new business opportunities from clients who understand the value of CLD.

When you qualify to become a Certified Lighting Designer (CLD), here’s what you tell clients and colleagues the world over:

QUICK FACTS

The CLD certification is the first – and only – evidence-based certification in lighting design in the world.

The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) created the certification after identifying the need for an internationally recognized benchmark of performance.

The CLD was developed by practitioners for practitioners.

You will be assessed on written responses and evidence submitted from your portfolio – no tests or specific training are required.

To maintain your CLD certification, you need to recertify every five years.

THE 7 DOMAINS OF PRACTICE

1. Goals and Outcomes: The creation of the lighting concept that satisfies the project requirements and the design intent so the solution performs as predicted.

2. Collaboration: Interaction with other disciplines by serving as an integral member of the team so that lighting relates to its context and adds value to the project.

3. Ingenuity: The contribution of ideas that demonstrate innovation, creativity, originality, imagination, or resourcefulness to foster the goals of the project.

4. Synthesis: The integration of the technical and aesthetic elements of lighting with space and form.

5. Science: The application of the principles of light to meet project relevant technical criteria.

6. Stewardship: The response of lighting to known and potential environmental impact.

7. Human Experience: The design of lighting solutions that positively affect people.

2.

Provide written responses to the questions on the CLD online application, which encompasses up to seven domains of practice.

The seven domains of practice define the core competencies for lighting design professionals worldwide and provide a standard for measuring the performance of CLD candidates.

Lighting designers who are professional members of an approved lighting design association (visit www.cld.global for a complete list) must demonstrate proficiency in five of the seven domains, excluding collaboration and stewardship. All others must demonstrate proficiency in all seven domains.

Your responses to the questions should explain in clear, concise English what you did on each project, how you did it and why. To access the online application form, register at www.cld.global.

3.

Exhibits are any material that helps demonstrate your competency, such as sketches, plans, photographs, and compliance documentation. Exhibits are required for each domain except collaboration.

You may submit up to three exhibits for each demonstration required in each of the domains. The number of demonstrations required depends on whether you are a professional member of an approved lighting association, as shown in the chart.

Exhibits should be provided from at least two unique project types, such as commercial, cultural, hospitality, residential, or retail. For a full listing of acceptable exhibits and project types, consult the CLD Candidate Handbook, available on the CLD web site www.cld.global.

Support your written responses with illustrative evidence, called exhibits.

4.

Pay the application fee.

The application fee is $625 USD. Professional members of approved lighting design associations receive a discounted price of $525 USD.

5.

Submit the completed application, including signed attestations, for review.

Along with your application, you must provide an attestation form signed by a client or relevant individual for each project. The online application tool features a digital version of the attestation form.

Your application will be evaluated by multiple reviewers who are highly experienced and respected within the architectural lighting design profession. They have undergone intensive training on how to assess and mark CLD applications. The review process is double-blind, meaning the reviewers do not know your identity nor the identity of the others reviewing your application.

6.

Receive notification of your certification status. The review process takes approximately 4-6 weeks. There are three possible outcomes:

1. You achieve certification. Congratulations, you will be able to use CLD after your name. Your name will be listed on the CLD web site, formal notification will be sent to your employer and you will receive a certificate suitable for framing, a press release and formal announcements to use for notifying clients of your accomplishment.

2. You will be asked to submit additional information. If reviewers request additional information for no more than two domains, you will have the opportunity to respond and submit clarifying material within four months.

3. You do not achieve certification. If reviewers determine you did not demonstrate competency in three or more domains, you will need to reapply (including paying the application fee). You can appeal a decision only after you have re-applied following an initial rejection.

Review all the application questions to understand what is required.

Identify 2-4 projects that you feel best demonstrate your competency in each of the required domains.

Use simple, clear, and concise English for your application responses to ensure reviewers understand your intent.

In addition to the written description of any exhibit required for your application, you may also annotate the exhibit itself.

Remove all markings from project photos and exhibits that identify you or your firm to ensure anonymity in the review process.
