It’s difficult enough for an adult to deal with the grief and pain associated with

illness and death. Imagine how it would be to cope as a child. Since 1996, New

Hope for Kids has helped these children in need throughout Central Florida. Our

purpose is to bring hope, healing and happiness to children and families suffer-

ing from grief, loss or life-threatening illnessesExperiencing death, serious illness and despair is often overwhelming, but there is always hope, and since 1996 there has been New Hope for Kids.

Our mission is to support children and families grieving the death of a loved one and to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses in Central Florida.

There’s a lot happening at New Hope for Kids! We have moved our business offices to the second floor of our 544 Mayo Avenue facility, where renovations are underway on the ground floor. Phase I of construction is expected to be completed in February 2016, creating our new Grief Program spaces. We have raised approximately $1.5 MM of our $2.5 MM goal that will allow us to complete the work of Phases I and II.

We still need your help! Support from our community to help us reach this goal is more important than ever. You may know of an individual, or a corporation, foundation or trust that may be willing to help with a cash or in-kind donation. There are opportunities to give on many levels, from a personalized brick in our “Path to Hope”, to sponsoring an activity room, all the way up to naming rights of the building itself! We have a $100,000 dollar-for-dollar matching grant that doubles your donation, and if your employer has matching funds available, you could triple your donation!

Thanks to everyone that supported this year’s Art of the Vine and BMW Drawing of Chance, we raised a record $247,000 to help fund our grief and wish programs. On June 19th and 20th we held our 22nd annual Mascot Games, which was the most successful in the history of the event, raising an incredible $77,000 to support New Hope for Kids.

All of our accomplishments could not have happened without the help of hundreds of very dedicated volunteers. Last year 25,094 volunteer hours were donated. That’s equivalent to 12 full time people, or a total employment cost of over $500,000! Volunteers really are the heart of our organization, and we couldn’t function without them.

As we move forward, I want to encourage each of you to share our mission with others, to get involved if you can, and to help us get our new home finished.

With sincere thanks,Dave Joswick

Greetings from Our Executive Director

Our focus is on children, ages 3-18, and embraces families coping with

life-threatening illnesses and/or the death of loved ones. New Hope for

Kids is the largest independent grief support center in Florida. We are

also one of the oldest wish-granting organizations in Central Florida. New

Hope for Kids has one of the highest efficacy rates of non-profits in the

area. Over 90% of our aggregate revenue goes directly to program ser-

vices. In comparison, many major national non-profits only send 70-80%

of their revenue to their programs, with the rest going to administrative

costs. In other words, every dollar you donate to New Hope for Kids makes

a real difference in the lives of Central Florida’s children. There is no

charge for our services, so donations are necessary to fund our programs.

Make a Difference

New Hope for Kids is the largest independent grief support center in Florida. We are also one of the oldest wish-granting organizations in Central Florida. We concentrate on children, ages 3-18, and families coping with life-threatening illnesses and/or the death of loved ones.

Over 200 volunteers and 40 grief facilitators currently help New Hope for Kids fulfill our mission to help Central Florida’s children. We could not exist without our amazing family of volunteers who come from all walks of life. They donate valuable time, energy and talent in a myraid of ways that reflect their personal skills and gifts. Our needs exceed our supply of volunteers, though. We need your helping hands.

We believe that each child has the potential to heal when provided with an accepting

and supportive environment. New Hope for Kids does this through directed activi-

ties such as painting, discussion and journaling. We even have a “Hurricane Room”

at our Grief Center for kids to vent extra energy. New Hope for Kids offers a place

where mutual support is given and play, listening and sharing are used to foster

acceptance. A key difference between our program and others is that our program

focuses on attending support groups over a twelve month period in the home-like

setting of the Center for Grieving Children. We believe the grief process cannot be

adequately addressed through short-term or in-school programs

Wishes for Kids

In 1985 the Children’s Wish Program was founded as a not-for-profit charity to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses who have not yet reached their 19th birthday nor had a wish granted previously. A life-threatening illness is defined by New Hope for Kids as any illness which will in all likelihood shorten the child’s full life expectancy.

Marc’s Wish

Marc is pictured with Sirena, one of the GMAC team members headed by Greg Warren. This team

took on the full responsibility to make Marc’s dream come true.

Marc waited 6 months in the Florida Hospital Cardiac Care Unit for a new heart. It was a very trying

time for him and his family. During this time, Marc’s mom Jeannine requested a wish for him. I vis-

ited him and though he could not form the words, he showed me a picture of a Portuguese Water Dog

that he wanted for his wish. Greg, Sirena and Greg’s granddaughter Nicole went to work researching

puppies, and found a little black female with a white marking. Marc appropriately named her Hope

because she provided the hope he needed to wait for his heart. The day finally came, and Marc re-

ceived a new heart and the beginning of a new life. His recovery has been miraculous. The picture on

the right was taken following Marc’s recovery with his Mom, Dad and Hope. His joy is evident!

Grief Program

New Hope for Kids’ Grief Support Program provides a safe and supportive environment where children grieving the death of a loved one can share their experience with others facing the same feelings of loss. Offering a unique opportunity for children to be-gin and continue their grief journey, New Hope for Kids strives to provide our families with hope, healing and renewal.

“Hello, my name is Marisa. My Father died in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I know all

the adults around me are sad and I’m sad too, but I know that one of the things that

helps me is when I get to do things that help me feel like a normal kid, like going to

school and playing with my friends. I have a couple of friends at school whose dads

died too. We don’t talk about it much, but it helps me to be around them. We just un-

derstand each other. How I plan to get through the holidays is the same as what I do

to help me all the time. I write notes to him. I pretend he is here with me and I have a

book where I put all the notes I write to him. My mom bought me a photo frame and

I put a special note he wrote to me in it. At night I read it to myself: Marisa, to my

dearest beautiful daughter, I love you more than anything in this world. No matter

whatever happens, I will always be there for you and will always love you. Love, Dad”

Grief Awareness Day

Children’s Grief Awareness Day is observed every year on the third Thursday of No-

vember (the Thursday before Thanksgiving) and is intended to remind grieving chil-

dren that they are not alone. This time of year is a particularly appropriate time as

the holiday season is especially difficult after a death. Children’s Grief Awareness Day

seeks to bring attention to the fact that often support can make all the difference in the

life of a grieving child.

Testimonials

“It’s taken two years for him to be able to talk about his feelings relating to his mother’s death. Because of this place he can express his feelings, his grades are improving and our relationship has become very close.” --Grandmother now raising her grandson due to the death of his mother
