With this, USC Chairperson and Student Regent IreneKayle Santillan said that changes on the schedule o the ac-tivities were made as per advised by the Office o StudentServices (OSS).

CANCELATION AND RESCHEDULINGUSC has confirmed the cancelation o Rave Party and

Freeday Friday which were originally scheduled on Septem-ber 25.

Santillan stated that they totally cancelled these eventsbecause the council couldnt find another schedule or theseactivities.

Its okay to cancel these activities kasiminor eventslang naman siya, she added.

Meanwhile, the awarding ceremony or this years Sep-tember Festival was moved to September 24, on the corona-tion night o Mr. and Ms. Bicol University (BU) 2015.

Te awarding ceremonies will be divided into two.For the minor activities, awarding will be right afer the com-petition. Te overall winner and the ranking o the 16 col-leges will be announced during the coronation night, sheadded.

Moreover, Santillan said that she agrees with the OSSdecision o cancelling the events because this will affect themajority o students.

Ang BU week kasi is not cancellation o classes. Itsjust transer o classes rom the classroom to the outside.Kung ganoong concept ang itatake natin, wala kang itatransfer

kasi holiday.BUeos reacted both positively and negatively with

the changes in the calendar o activities or this years Sep-tember Festival.

Okay lang naman[cancelation o activities] kasi pu-punta dito yung students or those activities [Rave Party andFreeday Friday] lang, Mariella Isablle Melgar, secretary othe College Student Council (CSC) o the College o Arts andLetters said.

Also, Ma. Florentina A. Villar, a student rom abaco

campus agreed with the decision o USC or it shows that theuniversity respects the celebration o Eidl Adha o Islams. On the other hand, Monica Caure, also rom C, said

that shes disappointed with the cancellation.Sayang kasi yung memories na pwedeng makuha sa

    mga activitiesna yun,she urther said.

BU OLYMPICS STILL ON FIREDespite the declaration o Eidl Adha as a regular holi-

day on September 25, 2015, BU Olympics will still be pushedthrough up to the end o the 46 thFounding Anniversary cel-ebration.

According to Pro. Ma. Merlie R. Arbo, Dean o OSS,BU Olympics will still be pushed and the overall championwill be announced on the coronation night or Mr. and Ms.BU.

Dr. Celerino Palacio, University Sports Coordinator, stressed that BU Olympics will not be postponed since theres

an instruction coming rom BU President Arnulo Mascari-as.

Tuloy ang games[BU Olympics] hindi natin ito pwe-deng ipostpone kasi gagastos nanaman tayo , he said.

On the other hand, Santillan reiterated that USCnever acilitated any sports activity in line with the BU Olym-pics. Sports activities are handled by the university sportscoordinator and his team.

Despite the increasing number o reported injuriesdays beore the celebration o the 46thFounding Anni-versary o Bicol University (BU), the BU Main Clinicinsisted that they are actually ready or the possiblesurge o injury cases.

Dr. Julio M. Abainza, medical officer IV o the BU MainClinic, said that they have done early preparations months be-ore the conduct o the BU week. Our transports are ready;our medical kits are all ready. Weve communicated with theheads and we have anticipated it [injuries], Abainza said.

Injury reports rom the different colleges in the univer-sity include minor laceration to major injuries like ractureand sprains.

Abainza points the lack o discipline o the competi-tors as a actor or the increasing number o injuries. Some o

the players during BU week were not athletic. Some were justorced to join resulting to incidents like this. Actually, we havethis report weeks ago about a soccer-related injury rom CAL[College o Arts and Letters]. He did not wear the right soccershoes resulting to broken emur, Abainza stated.

Te BU clinic also said that they instructed the coachesand advisers o the competitors about the importance o sae-ty beore and during the events o BU week.

We also guide the coaches, instructors, and advisers othe injured students and non-injured students. As their head, they are the ones responsible or their saety aside rom theuniversity itsel.

Te medical officer also added that there are more acci-dents during the practice o the athletes beore the BU Week, but these accidents occurred outside the university.

Natl Holiday alters Sept Fest activities

In every event, organizers are expect-

ed to prioritize the welfare of the partici-pants. Their lives must never be put into riskjust for the sake of winning.

This year, the Bicol University (BU)administration along with the UniversityStudent Council (USC) came up with a re-vised guideline in the Pep Squad Compe-tition which included restrictions in stuntsand pyramid standing, originality of rou-tines, and the removal of props.

The revision was made because of theincreasing number of Pep Squad-relatedaccidents for the previous months. In thedata recorded by the BU Main Clinic, twostudents from the College of Arts and Let-ters suffered major injuries before the BUWeek. Others suffered minor injuries.

With this situation at hand, a motionwas released by the administration statingthat this year might be the last Pep Squadcompetition. This motion was then opposedby the USC and other college student coun-cils.

Pondering things, it can never be de-nied that the absence of the Pep Squad willdiminish the delight and enthusiasm of thestudents since it is considered one of thehighlights of BU Week. However, it cannotalso be denied that if the administration andthe students themselves failed to do suf-ficient precautionary measures, studentssafety will be compromised.

Indeed, Dr. Julio M. Abainza of BUMain Clinic is right when he affirmed thatif the safety of the students will not be as-sured by their trainers and respective col-leges, then the Pep Squad Competitionshould be stopped.

Lets face the truth. Our universityclinic does not have enough facilities andequipment which would cater the needs ofthe students when such accidents happen. With this, it is depressing to think that somestudents even have the guts to practice se-cretly, without their parents permission, justto make sure that nobody would be able tocopy their moves.

Adding insult to the injury, these stu-dents dont even have proper training in ex-ecuting those breathtaking stunts. As a re-

sult, their safety is being sacrificed, whichthen puts the blame on the administration.

Ultimately, the revision of the guide-lines will not guarantee that there will be nomore accidents but if the students are con-scious about their safety, then they will notput themselves in utter jeopardy.
