hipmunk Analysis

Hipmunk is an online community travel platform that helps people arranging best price, duration, and number of stops (flights) from commercial flights, hotels and activities.

The primary user is traveller who prefers to save time and money by visually comparing top travel sites to show the best flight and hotel at the affordable prices.

The unique display makes it easy and fast to to plan users’ travel schedule with the best option.

USER TEST Findings

“Hipmunk only uses color and text to indicate the airline company which is not very obvious for user to search the specific airline. Especial-ly for older age group people who have diffi-culty to read the tiny text.”

“The price showing option doesn’t have Chi-nese Yuan/Renminbi, it is hard for me to know the exact price of the ticket.”

“When selecting the available options for flights, the app takes me to external web-site to complete the payment. I think it is better to complete the payment within the app.

Ken Wu / Business-man/ 50 year-old

Ken takes airplane frequently who has his personal preference airline company, the way how Hipmunk lays out the tickets doesn’t show the airline compa-ny’s logo clearly. The layout is hard for Ken to find his prefer airline tickets.

Sally prefers to pay directly within hipmunk instead of leading users to other sites; other-wise, it’s meaningless to search travel infor-mation on hipmunk.

Linda as being an international student who always needs to exchange Chinese Yuan to Canadian, so if there has no Chinese Yuan, it is not convenient for not only her but also all the international students to book ticket or hotel.

Linda Zheng /int. student / 22 year-old Sally Lin / student / 23 year-old

PROBLEMS Findings

Searching bar is inefficient to look for travel info. The main flight and hotel icons are locating at the bottom that they seem to be the secondary elements.

The searching bar doesn’t provide filter for more detail features and information. The primary booking elements should show on the top page. Secondary elements such as calendar, saved lists or profile pages should be showing at the bottom.

Doesn’t display all city currency dollars for payment.(shown lack of international currency)

Less selection for international currency that users will not be able to know the exact price in their country dollar.

The airline companies logos is not obvious for user to find their pre-ferred airline at their first glance.

Users are not able to recognize which airline they are looking (small texts) when they are comparing the lowest price. The colour bars do not clearly show their pur-pose that might confuse users.

PROBLEMS Findings

The app takes users to the external website for payment, which takes more time to complete the booking.

Users need to take longer time to complete the booking. If users cannot pay directly within the app, they might stop booking and think the goal of hipmunck is meaningless and useless.

• The range of app users’ age is not limited to certain group of people.

• Many people are interesting in travel topic; therefore, they’re excited and willing to do the user test.

• Like to provide some feedbacks based on their own travel experiences, which help us on doing research.

RESEARCH Reflection

Strength

• Only short time is provided to the users. The results might only be their impression , but not the user experiences.

• Feedbacks are given in different fields that is hard to focus on the main issues.

Weakness

• Briefly explain the purpose of the app and give flexiable time to users while doing the user test.

• Look for more people to do the user test and categorize different group of people to narrow down their opinions and feedbacks. This can help to focus on the main issues and solve the problems.
