The meeting was called to order by President Barb Bowman using a brass dolphin as a substitute for the many gavels which she seems to lose at a furi-ous rate. After the invocation by Abby Landmeier and the Pledge of Allegiance, we were led in song by “Mild Man,” Larry Wild, assisted by Sherry Wright and Jeanie Thomas on the piano. The Four Way Test followed.
Introduction of Guests Cliff Anson introduced Darin Leon-ard, former Roteractor who moved to Denver and came back to town with his fiancé, Csille Hasvon who is from Hungary. Jan Pomrenke had the honor of pre-senting Hugh Coachman, our summer visiting Rotarian from Florida. Hugh may be leaving us soon as the peach crop is almost over. Larry Wild introduced Arllys Inder-gard. Tom Hunn brought an entire Brit-ish delegation consisting of Charles
Sneddon, a long time Grand Junction Resident, John and Susan Challinor, and Carol Sheddon. Peter Booth had three guests. From Redlands Rotary Glen Miller and from the symphony, Kelly Anderson and Christopher Dungey who are our speaak-ers. Mike Kercheval introduced John Finegan, a member of a Denver Rotary Club who is with the American Cancer Society. Past President Kevin McChesney introduced us to Claudine Bogart, Assistant district Governor for District 5478.
Announcements President Barb asked Members to check the yellow attendance sheets show-ing who is signed up for the September 19th “Rotary on the Rooftop” at the Avalon. There is a standby list in case someone who is signed up can’t make it. Please let Barb know if you are in the “can’t make it” category. She also an-
nounced that the Rotary Clubs in the Valley have teamed up to purchase a Ro-tary paver block. This will be dedicated at the rooftop event and will be the first paver installed.
Happy Bucks Bill Sisson was happy to have attended the Aspen Jazz Fest and on Saturday to have celebrated his 20th anniversary. Cliff Anson had happy and sad bucks. He was happy that his wife, Past Presi-dent Teresa, has just been nominated for District Governorship for 2015-17. He was sad that his wife, Past President Teresa, has just been nominated for District Governorship for 2015-17. He is seeking names for himself, other than “spouse” which sounds a little flat. (Cliff, if you offer a reward I am sure that the creative Members can come up with a suitable name that might even be useable in public.) Sherry Wright started with an an-nouncement. It is again School Diction-ary time but we have lost a number of
corporate sponsors. Any donations to the local Foundation to support the Diction-ary project will be appreciated. Now for the happy. Her 11 year old son was eating lunch with her in Burger King when he noticed an elderly gentleman with crutches struggling to get out of his seat. Her son went over, helped him up and walked him to the door. Truly a “Rotary Moment---Service above self. (Sherry, you have obviously done a fine job of teaching your son to be a gentleman. Congratulations.) Carol (of the British contingent) was happy for her brother and wife that they were able to be here as guests. Larry Wild had a bad start to his day with a flat tire and was very happy when Big O Tires fixed it at no charge. He was also happy to see our guest, Darren, who rang bells with him for the Salvation Army an unspecified number of years ago. Tom Benton had happy bucks for a former Club Member, Sarah Catlin, who was in charge of this past weekend’s an-tique auto show. The show was a benefit for Hilltop, and was a great success. We would expect nothing less from Sarah’s meticulous work.) Barbara Traylor Smith went to the Glenwood Caverns and had a great time, as well as celebrating her 2nd wedding anniversary. She recommended the Lavender and Pine B&B as a great place to stay. Doug Colaric was happy that several Rotarians spelled him during the 15 hours he had to stand with his cars at the antique auto show, but one of his cars winning “Best in Show” made up for the long haul. (Congratulations on a wonder-ful job of restoration.) Vela was happy to receive two dollars off certificates for 25% off at good will. One of them was for intimate apparel, Af-ter describing how he probably couldn’t wear any of it, he sold the certificates to Kevin McChesney who promised that he would give them to his wife (rather than using them himself.) Chris Unfug was happy that his son began work in the office with him. He was also happy that some portion of the King’n Trio (or Kingless Trio) would be playing at the Avalon fund raising on the 28th. Darin Leonard was happy to be visit-ing our Club and he and Csille donated
some happy bucks to the cause. Vicki Canaday was happy to suggest that sometime in the past Rotary wives were called “Rotary Anns” and husbands were called “Rotary Andys.” She suggest-ed “Rotary and Cliffie.” (Needless to say, Cliff was not visibly overwhelmed by this idea, so the contest is still open.) Barb Bowman was happy for all the help that Claudine Bogart gave her start-ing her term as President. She was also happy that she and her husband showed great dance-ability at the “Feast of Skulls” celebration where they started the danc-ing and soon others joined in. (Barb is a real leader.)
Fines All Rotarians who went to the Feast of Skulls without wearing a Rotary pin lost 2 bucks. Michael Burke was fined for his il-legible handwriting on the Avalon party sign-up sheet. Charlie Sours paid rent on Barb’s Las Vegas hat which he hasn’t returned. Teresa Anson was forced to buy back the eyeglasses that she left at the Past Presidents’ dinner. Bob Czarnecki did something despi-cable with his photos of Alaska, for which he paid dearly. Tom Hunn forgot to place his phone on “stun” and it rang during the meeting.
Gifts for the President Kevin McChesney brought some gour-met coffee all the way from Durango. Lou Ludington, returning from a month tour around Europe, (were you gone that long, Lou?) brought a doll from Romania and a Rotary flag from the Club in Bucharest. Jason Bailey (one of our newest mem-bers) showed that he has learned our customs well as he brought something less-than-useful from Washington DC, a map, and something very useful, espe-cially for “loose gavel” Barb, a miniature gavel that works. Charlie Sours brought, from Alaska, a map, some gold flakes, a pass on a railroad, a used bus ticket, and some sourdough bread starter.
Program Chris Unfug introduced Kelly An-derson, Executive Director of the Grand Junction Symphony, recounted the suc-
cessful season of last year. He explained all the concerts, outreach programs and school events that the Symphony carries out to bring music to all ages in the Val-ley. He then introduced the upcoming symphony season, including the opening concert featuring world-renown Cellist, Lynn Harrell.
He then introduced Christopher Dungy, Symphony Board Member and world-renown cello maker. It is no coincidence that Lynn Harrell is coming to Grand Junction. Christopher made the cello that Harrell will be playing at the open-ing concert. (This counts as real coups for the orchestra and for Christopher) .) Christopher gave a brief outline of how a cello is made and told the story of how his cello came to be chosen by Harrell.
This was one of the more fascinating and educational programs we have had.
