DESCRIPTION

Presentation at UXCamp DC on January 5, 2013. Before you can design one needs to frame the problem(s) at hand. Understanding if the foundations of the problem are simple, complicated, or complex - perhaps has not emerged out of chaos - is something that is essential. Knowing what we are working with allows us to consider what types of solutions we can or should consider. This talk takes a few minutes of previous talks and workshops and expands it to better understand the dimensions of simple, complicated, complex, and chaos.

Simple or Simplicity?

Page 7: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Simple: Plain, basic, or uncomplicated in form,

nature, or design

Page 8: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Simplicity: The quality or condition of being easy to

understand or do

Page 9: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Simple is state related------

Simplicity is a result of what is/has been applied

Page 10: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

To put simplicity first we must understand the other dimensions

Simple :: Blocks

Page 21: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Complicated :: Grids

Page 22: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Complex :: Fractals

Page 23: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Start by mapping core dimensions

Page 24: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Map the interactions between dimensions

Page 25: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Work to boil down to its basic dimensions

Page 26: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

If you can get it to a matrix you are working

with complicated

Page 27: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Complicated can use good practices and can

be straight forward

Page 28: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

More than matrix dimensions you are

dealing with complex

Page 29: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Complexity requires monitoring and small actions

and adaptable solutions

Page 30: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Chaos is from not understanding the

problem well enough

Page 31: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Work to get out of chaos and embrace the

complexity

Page 32: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Fractals are not built from chaos, but from

complexity

Page 33: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Chaos is the unknown, not the unknowable

Page 34: Understanding Complicated, Complex, and Chaos to Improve Design

Things happen because of an action or activity, seeing the outcome lets

us know there is something there

then unknown
