City officials approved the Business Plan and Annual Budget for Fiscal Year 2016 at the second Public Budget Hearing held on September 24.

The new Budget includes $12 million in priority capital projects over the next three years, such as:

• Aquatic Complex renovations (including repairing the 50-meter pool),

• Parks improvements including Cypress Park artificial turf field replacements, Gymnasium renovations, park security cameras, and energy efficient field lighting,

• Center for the Arts roof repairs and interior improve-ments,

• roadway resurfacing, • Forest Hills Boulevard pedestrian lighting,• Wiles Road and 441 intersection improvements, • Forensic analysis and other police, safety and investi-

gative equipment. The adopted budget also includes initiatives geared

toward enhancing the community’s appearance, safety, infrastructure and economic development.

In order to complete these projects, property taxes increased by $0.2285, for a new millage rate at $4.7982. This will impact the average single-family homeowner by $45 per year in additional property taxes to the City.

The Debt Service Millage rate increased from $0.2038 to $0.2933 due to the addition of the $12.45 million Public Safety General Obligation Bond approved by voters last November (see update on page 6). In addition, the Residential Solid Waste Special Assessment will increase by $8.91 to $234.75 per year. Although the Fire Assessment Fee for single-family homes increased by $5.64, there will be no increase in the Fire Assessment Fee for commercial properties.

“Our goal is to enhance the community’s quality of life, while also attracting new businesses to invest in our City,” City Manager Erdal Dönmez said. “This new budget will place the City in the best position to take advantage of a growing economy.”

Thousands celebrate ArtWalk Grand Opening

Music was pumping in Downtown Coral Springs as crowds enjoyed the new ArtWalk at the Grand Opening on October 9, despite the few bouts of rain during the evening. Live entertainment, local artists and food trucks were just some of the highlights of the event, and we can’t forget the craft beer from Funky Buddha Brewery. With several thousand in attendance, it was a great kick-off event introducing this new gathering space to the community. Proceeds from beverage sales benefitted the Coral Springs Museum of Art.

“Residents have been asking for a vibrant downtown for years, and we are excited to officially unveil our new ArtWalk,” Mayor Skip Campbell said at the opening.

Artist Zachary Knudson also debuted his public art piece, Beyond, during the event. This 13-foot tall infinity glass sculpture features LED lights that illuminate the ArtWalk at night. Visit the ArtWalk to view other pieces already on display, including HD by Kimberly Fiebiger and Union One by Kevin Barrett.

The ArtWalk is much more than an attractive pedestrian-friendly environment in the Downtown Coral Springs area.

Art You Ready?

The City has plans to make it a vibrant and bustling area where there will be multiple community events for all to enjoy. The City, along with the Community Redevelopment Agency and Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce, will be planning more events at the ArtWalk (see sidebar), in addition to the new Coral Springs Farmers’ Market starting November 8 (see page 4).

ArtWalk visitors will find HD in his new home, always smiling and ready for a photo. Local band Mouth Tape played acoustic rock for the crowd. Residents strolled by the live artist tents to see their creative process, and enjoyed a live painting performance by Pontet and Resurrection Drums.

The City Commission and members of the Community Redevelopment Agency officially opened the ArtWalk with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

sPolice Department is Craigslist safe zone

Using Craigslist to buy and sell items? Better to be safe than sorry. If you are buying or selling items on Craigslist, why not meet in the parking lot of the Police Department? Legitimate buyers and sellers will have no issue with meeting you there. The parking lot is under video surveillance, and the police department is operational 24/7. All too often we are hearing about people being robbed or, even worse, injured by someone they corresponded with on Craigslist. So please, if you are conducting a transaction, consider using the Police Department parking lot.

Learn self-defense tactics Want to learn self-defense tactics? The Coral Springs Police

Department is empowering women to protect themselves by attending their upcoming Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes scheduled throughout next year. Women ages 13 and older, who attend the class, will learn the most effective ways to defend themselves when faced with poten-tially dangerous situations.

RAD focuses on repetition, practice and muscle memory to help women survive during a struggle. Participants have a chance to practice what they learn during live scenarios.

RAD meets on four consecutive Tuesdays, and the next session begins January 12, 2016 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Public Safety Building. The course is physically involved, but no prior self-defense experience is required.

Participants must register in advance for a $25 refundable fee. After completing all four classes, payment will be refunded. Otherwise, payment will be withheld.

2801 Coral Springs Drive

The Coral Springs Police Department is committed to keeping Coral Springs residents and visitors safe this holiday season and throughout the year. Following some simple safety tips will help keep you and your family safe.

Too often, opportunistic criminals prey on holiday shoppers. While you are out making your purchases, stay alert. Remember to park your car in a well-lit area and secure valuables inside your trunk or take them with you. When you return to your vehicle, have your keys in hand so that you can quickly unlock the door and get in. You should never carry large amounts of money and if you go to an ATM for cash, do so during daytime hours in a safe location.

With the number of vehicles on our roadways and in crowded parking lots, it is important to practice patience. Speeding, distractions and alcohol contribute to the increased number of accidents this time of year.

If you will be leaving home for the holidays and are a Coral Springs resident, please sign up for our free Vacation Watch program. To qualify for the vacation watch program,

your home must be vacant for a minimum of five days and a 30-day maximum time frame. To register, contact the Coral Springs Police Department’s non-emergency line 24 hours before your departure at 954-344-1800.

Did you know that 43% of ALL crime that takes place in Coral Springs is vehicle burglaries? Under the cover of darkness, criminals often walk around neighborhoods checking for unlocked vehicles to burglarize. There are steps you can take to prevent car burglaries:

• ALWAYS lock your car door! Set a reminder to check that your car is locked each night before bed.

• Remove items of value from your car. Never leave a firearm, wallet, phone, computer/iPad, GPS or even expensive sunglasses inside your vehicle.

If you see someone during late night or early morning hours that you are unfamiliar with, especially if they are wearing a backpack, “Make a Call, Make a Difference” and dial our non-emergency number 954-344-1800.

Stay safe this holiday season

Have ‘Coffee with a Cop’Chief Tony Pustizzi and the men and women of the Coral

Springs Police Department are making it easier to meet officers and discuss issues regarding crime and safety in our community. The program, “Coffee with a Cop,” will take place at Bageland and Chick-Fil-A on select Saturday mornings. For dates and locations, visit our website or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Reminder: No solid waste or recycling collection

on Christmas DayAll solid waste and recycling facilities are closed on

Christmas Day; therefore no collections are scheduled. This is the only day out of the entire year that there will be no collection services. Waste Pro will accommodate residences that missed collections on Christmas Day and remove excess waste on the next scheduled collection day.

Historically, there is significantly more solid waste gen-erated during Christmas week. Some tips are:

• Recycle all the paper (including wrapping paper and boxes), cans, bottles, and other recyclables in the BLUE CART.

• Large cardboard and excess boxes stacked together may be placed for collection with the bulk waste (on the first collection day of the week).

• Christmas trees may be placed for collection with the bulk waste (on the first collection day of the week) or brought to the Waste Transfer Station on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons.

Old electronics (computers, televisions, etc.) may be recycled at the Waste Transfer Station at the west end of Wiles Road on Saturday, January 3 or the first Saturday of the month.

On the first scheduled collection days after Christmas (December 26, 28 and 29), Waste Pro will collect excess resi-dential garbage in heavy duty bags or garbage cans placed with the green carts. This special excess waste collection only applies for these three days.

Multi-family complexes or businesses that require addi-tional collections should make arrangements in advance by calling Waste Pro.

Waste Station open on MLK holidayThe Waste Transfer Station will be open on Monday,

January 18 for any resident who wants to drop off bulk trash, including appliances, furniture, carpeting, and any recyclable materials.

No commercial waste or raw garbage is accepted at this station. This service is free and available to Coral Springs resi-dents only. Please remember that two forms of identification are required for proof of residency. The Waste Transfer Station is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and is located on Wiles Road at N.W. 126th Avenue.

Cleveland Clinic to open new Family Health Center Cleveland Clinic Florida is expanding in Coral Springs and

will build a new 65,000 square foot Family Health Center. The facility will house a clinic with up to 40 exam rooms, an ambulatory surgery center with four operating suites, and several procedure rooms.

“This expansion will allow us to better meet the increasing demand for specialized services, more con-venient access, and expanded inpatient capacity for the region,” said Toby Cosgrove, MD, President & CEO of Cleveland Clinic.

With construction of the Coral Springs facility, Cleveland Clinic Florida will have seven locations across Broward and Palm Beach counties in addition to its main campus in Weston.

“We are excited to welcome Cleveland’s new facility in Coral Springs,” Mayor Skip Campbell said. “Cleveland is investing $70 million dollars in our community and it’ll be a great service for our residents and neighboring cities.”

The facility is expected to be built in two years and will be located on the southeast corner of the Sawgrass Expressway and University Drive.

Commission renames Senior Center

in Mullins ParkThe City Commission recently renamed Sartory Senior

Center as Coral Springs Senior Center at Sartory Hall. Originally built in 1972 as the City Community Building,

the facility was eventually designated as a senior center by day and a teen center by night. As more teen venues were built, the use shifted to be primarily a gathering space for seniors.

It was renamed Sartory Hall in 1991 after Jack Sartory, an early member of the Coral Springs Planning and Zoning Board, activist and volunteer. His wife, Virginia Sartory, received the Chamber of Commerce Covered Bridge Award in 1982 for her extensive volunteer work.

Coral Springs Senior Center at Sartory Hall hosts many programs, including fitness and educational classes. For current schedules and other activities for seniors, visit our website or call for more details.

Young artists (ages 6 to 12) explore a different medium or type of art in each three or four week session. Homeschool subjects for this year include: World Travel Through Art, Meet the Masters, America’s Famous Landmarks, Ceramic Hand-building, Art of the Animal and Sculpture. Homeschool classes meet on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
