Do you know what a habitat is?
Think, pair, share your ideas.

A habitat is the natural home of an organism (a plant or animal). There are lots of different kinds of habitats: some animals like to live on land and some in the water; some like to live in dark, damp areas while others
like it to be hot and dry; some like to live high up in trees and others prefer to live in burrows underground. A habitat can be any area where
an animal or plant lives.

Have a look at the different animals and habitats on the next slide. Can you
match the animals to their correct habitats?

Were you
right?!
How did you know which habitat each animal lived in?

Lots of animals live in marine habitats underwater. Why do you think some animals can live underwater and some can’t?
Why can this fish live happily underwater but this cow can’t?

Any animal that lives in a particular habitat has adapted to be able live, move, eat and reproduce in that particular habitat. Animals who live in
underwater habitats have adapted to be able to do everything they need to under the water. For example, fish use gills to take in oxygen from the
water instead of breathing through their lungs like we do. They also have fins and tails to help them swim in the water and change direction. This is
called adaptation.

Can you think of any other ways in which animals who live in underwater habitats have adapted to their environments?
