Director's Notes:::

Dear Friends of the Federal way Chorale,

We are so pleased you have joined us today.

Our final concert of the year offers us anopportunity to do music that is novel, refreshing andlight - music with "a spring in its step". The musicyou will hear today is from the 20th century andincludes classical, spiritual, rock, and folk; music thatwill be both an audio and a visual experience for you.

We have enjoyed pieces by Eric Whitacre in pastconcerts. Today you will hear probably his mostfamous work, "Cloudburst." This piece, written byone of the bright, outstanding composers of ourgeneration, has become one of the standards inchoral repertoire. Feel free to close your eyes andlisten to the building storm and falling rain. Wehave coupled it with one of the simpler Whitacre

pieces, "This Marriage." It is an homage to the loveof one person for another.

Once I came up with the idea of the concerttheme, American Music spectrum, I tried to finda bridge between traditional choral music and thepopular style that emerged during the 20th century.Written in the late 60's, a time when we were goingthrough so many musical changes (Pop, R&B,Rock and Roll), "The Creation" was one of the firstattempts at using the light rock and roll/pop genreto create a real choral experience. In this piece, youwill hear the same influences you heard in "Josephand the Amazing Technicolor Drearncoat" and"Godspell." I remember it being a piece that mademe smile and hope it has the same effect on you.

Thank you for coming. I hope that, by the endof the concert, you will be whooping and holleringright along with us.

ear Friends of the performing arts,We welcome you to this, our seventeenth Spring Concert.As the title "From Classical to Rock: An American Spectrum" suggests, our Director Laird Thornton

chosen music selections that span the range of serious classics to "foot stornpin'" folk pieces, mostly apella.The Chorale has been challenged to: learn the notes, observe the dynamics, keep the tempo, have

ressive countenances, in some cases memorize the music, and last but not least WATCH THEIRECTOR! If we do all that Laird will even smile ..... watch for it.Every Monday night over the last fifteen weeks, for two to two-and-a-half hours, the Chorale membersve been rehearsing for these two performances. In addition the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sectionsve held sectional practices. On any given day several Chorale members will have been listening to

rehearsal CDs at home or in their cars.While it is work, it is also our love of music, our entertainment, and culminates in our desire to be a partthe process of presenting memorable music. We depend upon our Director Laird Thornton, Assistant

irector Megan Oberfield, and our Accompanist Phil Wilkinson, to give us the foundation for theseorts.A large group of people, mostly volunteers, work behind the scenes to make this presentation possible.

r thie Thornton, our Concert Coordinator, is the primary force bringing it all together on performancey.During the performance intermission, you will be offered rafHe tickets for several prizes. The rafHe

roceeds are the source of funding for one or more scholarships the Chorale awards each year to deserving.zh school students going on to college in music related fields. We encourage you to participate and be

of the process for helping these deserving young people be successful and hopefully share their talentsith all of us in the future.The Federal Way Chorale is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Chorale is managed by a Board of

Directors, which oversees everything from budgeting, fund raising, publicity, membership, and facilities,-0 long-range planning and community involvement. One of our long-range goals that very much

epends on community involvement, is to help bring about the construction of a performing arts hall,combined with a cultural and conference center in Federal Way. In the meantime the Chorale very muchappreciates St. Luke's Lutheran Church for providing this venue and sharing its staff and support services.

The Federal Way Chorale hopes you enjoy this performance and extends an invitation to you and your- 'ends to consider joining us in a singing or non-singing capacity. If you are interested please visit our-ebsite at www.fwchorale.corn, or call (253) 250-3326 for more information.
