The future of nursing is in new
graduate nurses...And we’re losing them.
The fol lowing module is intended to increase awareness about the
impact of horizontal violence toward new graduate nurses.
Up to 60% of new nurse graduates leave their first nursing position within the first year
50% of that number leave the profession
entirely
Nurses are notorious for their poor treatment of
newcomers, and it goes deeper than simple hazing or
initiation.
The quotations throughout this module come from actual new graduate nurses. Names have
been changed to protect privacy.
I know that I know lots of things,
but I don’t know where we keep
tape or how to page the right
doctor or .. hundreds of other
things and somedays I come home
so aware of my shortcomings and
completely lacking confidence in my
ability to be a competent nurse. -

The first months of practice can be chaotic, painful, and
traumatic—fostering feelings of isolation,
vulnerability, and uncertainty. These feelings
can result in low self-esteem, lack of self-
confidence, and a sense of failure in new graduates

It’s like walking into a
very important game
where the stakes are
really high, and the
people you are playing
with won’t let you see
the rule book . . .
I hadn’t realized
nursing was so
competitive. Lots of
poker faces.- Eric

It was the looks the preceptor gave me. . . like I was stupid. . . In my whole three months of orientation, I can’t think of a single time anyone ever complimented me.

Studies show that bullying activity is a learned behavior, not a trait
inherent to the bully or victim. Nurses who are initially mortified by the negative environment begin to adopt bullying
behaviors…

Survivors have to look the other way . . . or go along with the crowd to survive. You have to take the party line even if you don’t believe it.
