The School Aims
All of our pupils have barriers to learning due to their s ignif icant emotional,social and behavioural diff icult ies and other complex needs. Our role is tohelp our young people to come to terms with, and overcome, thesediff icult ies.
The aims for our work are:
1 To prepare pupils well for each successive stage of their development and to benefit from those experiences, opportunit ies and responsibi l it ies that help bui ld maximum independence in adult l i fe.
2 To provide a curriculum that is broad and balanced and also appropriate to the physical, emotional, developmental, social and spir itual needs of the individual.
3 To provide an environment that is safe, st imulating, supportive and promotes independence and has strong community values whilst recognis ing the individuals need for autonomy.
4 To provide an education which discourages prejudice, discrimination and unequal opportunity based on such things as race, rel igion, class, sexual ity or disabi l ity.
5 To enable pupils to participate in a wide range of experiences and to bui ld a relationship with mainstream schools at every suitable opportunity.
6 To work hol ist ical ly with other chi ldren 's services, both within and outside the school, to benefit the whole chi ld and its family.

Admissions Criteria
The school provides a learning environment over 5 s ites to meet theindividual needs of the young people aged between 11 and 16. However, theschool is very f lexible and wil l meet the changing needs of young people 'srequirements. The school is non denominational and has a secular ethos butrespects the cultural needs and rel igious bel iefs of al l .
We offer a f lexible service which takes into consideration the fol lowingfactors:
Young people have a statement of special educational needs or are under assessment (education, care or health).
Young people whose needs stem from complex learning diff icult ies and disabi l it ies, including autist ic spectrum condit ions, moderate to severelearning diff icult ies, associated medical and health issues and moderatemental health needs.
Admissions Process
We welcome init ial telephone or email enquir ies. In order to begin thereferral process, we require a referral form which can be obtain form ouroff ice.
Once a referral has been received the fo l lowing act ions wi l l occur:
An acknowledgement wil l be sent by returnThe senior leadership team wil l consider the referral and provide an opinion on the viabi l ity of the school to meet needs of young personA member of the senior leadership team wil l be identif ied to lead on thereferral and they wil l be the point of contact from thereonParents/carers and the young person are invited to vis it to look round, discuss the prospective placement, meet other young people and speakto key members of staffWe vis it the young person along with their parents/carers in the currenthome/care and education settingA decis ion is made whether to offer a place or not. I f a place is not offered, we wil l offer advice on alternative placements i f required. I f adecis ion is made to admit, a letter and contract is sent to the referr ingauthority.Appropriate transit ion planning wil l occur before admission. A date for admission is agreed between al l relevant parties.

Curriculum Statement
At Ummid Independent School we ensure access to the curriculum areas thatare l isted in the Independent School Standards (2010). In accordance withthis we undertake to provide a curriculum that meets the needs of each youngperson including young people who have a statement of special educationalneeds.
Al l young people receive ful l-t ime supervised education, in which theyexperience a curriculum that includes a range of l inguist ic, mathematical,scientif ic, technological, human and social, physical, aesthetic and creativeaspects appropriate to their age and aptitude. The overriding aim of thecurriculum is to achieve the best possible outcomes for young people in termsof individual learning, independence, personal growth and development.
At Ummid Independent School we aim to:
Help young people to develop posit ive feel ings of self worth and confidence.
Provide a broad and balanced curriculum, including a focus on independence ski l ls that is inclusive and accessible to al l.
Del iver activit ies that provide suitable learning chal lenges, giving everyyoung person the opportunity to experience success and achieve as muchas possible.
Devise individual approaches and interventions, in response to the curriculum, to match young people 's diverse learning needs, interests and strengths.

PSHCE Statement
Learning PSHCE helps young people develop as an individual in a widersociety. Young people learn to understand themselves physical ly, emotionally,social ly and sexually and to understand their relationships with others.
PSHCE offers a l l young people the opportunity to:

Develop personal autonomy by having a degree of responsibi l ity and/or control over their l ives

SMSC Statement
Ummid Independent School aims to provide an environment where youngpeoples ' sp i r i tua l , mora l , soc ia l and cu l tura l (SMSC) development canflourish. We wil l provide opportunit ies for al l young people to learn andachieve and also promote their SMSC development to prepare them ful ly forthe opportunit ies, responsibi l it ies and experiences of adult l i fe.

Teaching and Learning
Ummid Independent School aims through successful teaching and learning todevelop the whole young person, enabling them to become l ifelong learnersand achieve their highest level of independence. We recognise that al l youngpeople have special ski l ls, abi l it ies and aptitudes and al l have an entit lementto access a broad, chal lenging and appropriate curriculum. As well as this,every young person is entit led to experience a variety of teaching andlearning styles, thus enabling them to achieve their ful l potential.

Trips and Residential Opportunit ies
In consultation with parents, pupils are offered the opportunity to take partin residential tr ips. The school also works closely with other agencies tosignpost famil ies to where opportunit ies for leisure activit ies outside ofschool are avai lable.
Pupils enjoy the chal lenge of spending t ime away from home, making newfriends, working with a range of people and trying things that they have notdone before.
Last year, the chi ldren went to various PGL activity centres throughoutEngland and Wales on a multi 5 day activity course, experiencing activit iessuch as kayaking, cl imbing, team building, and many other activit ies.
The pupils have taken part in a residential to Auschwitz. This experiencewas invaluable to their progression in terms of social development. Theyexperienced a new culture not previously known to them and learnedpriceless lessons in respect and consideration for others.
At Ummid Independent School we feel it is paramount for the pupils toexperience residentials as it is a key factor in developing their understandingand awareness of other cultures, rel igions and different ways of l i fe.

Special Educational Needs Statement
Everyone at Himmat/Ummid is committed to providing the condit ions andopportunit ies to enable any young person with SEN to be included ful ly in al laspects of school l i fe. The Special Needs pol icy at Himmat/Ummid supportsthe stated ethos of the school.
Sex and Relationship Education Statement
It is the pol icy of Ummid Independent School that Sex and RelationshipsEducation should form part of the curriculum of the school. The school aimsto prov ide the opportuni ty for young people to learn about sex andrelationships through Science, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHCE)Life Ski l ls programme and vis its from the school ' s Health Coordinator. Weendeavour to give young people the opportunity to learn the facts whiledispel l ing myths and half -truths without fear or anxiety.
Drug Education Pol icy Statement
Ummid Independent School provides an ongoing programme of Drug Educationas part of its curr iculum.

Rel igious Education Statement
Religious education is taught within the Respect scheme of work There is astrong emphasis on educating young people about rel igion and introducingthem to a range of worship environments within the community. Aspects ofrel igious customs and bel iefs are also promoted in theme days or as part ofthe broader curriculum e.g. Art and Design and Engl ish.
As a non-denominational school we aim to support young people to developtheir spir itual dimension without any specif ic al legiance to any particularbranch of organised rel igion. We respect the r ight of parents who may wish towithdraw their chi ld from any activity that involves actual rel igious worshipand this wil l be discussed as part of the admissions process.

Management of Behaviour Statement
At Ummid Independent School we aim to promote posit ive social, emotionaland behavioural change in our young people through a supportive andconsistent approach across education and care, based on the needs of ourindividual young people. Our Behaviour Management Strategy is based onhol ist ic approaches and the therapeutic bel ief that al l people have thecapacity for growth towards health, no matter what their age or l i feexperiences. Many of our young people exhibit, and display behaviours thatact as barriers to learning and inclusion. An integral part of our strategy is toovercome these barriers. We aim to provide a consistent environment whereyoung people feel safe and secure and reach their potential through posit iverelationships.
Rewards and Sanct ions Statement
Rewards and Sanctions form part of the school ' s Behaviour Pol icy practicesand procedures. Rewards should reinforce posit ive behaviour or recognise agood achievement within the classroom. Sanctions should be consistentlyapplied and explained to deter unacceptable behaviour. Giving rewards is oneway of giving feedback on how people are doing. Giving praise to youngpeople when they are doing well should be encouraged and rewards are partof this.

Care and Control Statement
At Ummid Independent School we aim to promote posit ive change to youngpeople ' s behav iour through support ive and cons i s tent approach. Ourapproaches to change and management are based on each young person 'sindividual needs. Behaviour is seen within the context of the whole personand their learning needs. With this in mind we choose to adopt a solutionfocussed hol ist ic approach to the change and management of behaviour.
The Use of Restr ict ive Physical Intervention atUmmid Independent School
Many of the young people at Ummid Independent School display a variety ofchal lenging behaviours that result in a range of strategies, including RPIbeing used in order to reduce r isk.
The organisation uses Team Teach as a preferred method of RPI as approvedby The Brit ish Inst itute of Learning Diff icult ies.
Exclusion Statement
Our preference is always to work with parents/carers and the placingauthorit ies where a placement is experiencing severe diff icult ies. Where theplacement can no longer meet need we aim to work with al l parties to supporta transit ion to another placement. Only the Principal, or in his absence theDeputy Principal acting with his authority and fol lowing consultation with theRegistered Manager, can exclude a pupil from the school. The decis ion toexclude a pupil either for a f ixed term or on a permanent basis is serious andwil l normally only be the f inal step in a range of strategies that have beenunsuccessful.

Bullying and Harassment Statement
Bullying is behaviour, which is del iberately hurtful and fr ightening and caninclude both physical and verbal forms. I f bul lying is suspected or reported itis investigated immediately. It is dealt with appropriately and fol lowed uplater to ensure that it has not resumed. Ummid Independent School Anti-Bul lying Pol icy outl ines what we wil l do to prevent and tackle bul lying. Thepolicy has been drawn up through the be involvement of the whole schoolcommunity. Bul lying behaviour is not accepted in school and is never ignored.
Racism, Sexism and Homophobia Statement
Racist, sexist and homophobic incidents are not acceptable in school and arevery f irmly dealt with. Any incidents or comments are recorded in therelevant Incident Log along with the name of the person responsible for theincident and the consequences.
Careers Education and Information, Advice andGuidance
Ummid Independent School provides qual ity care for its young people 's needsand abi l it ies and this is particularly relevant in its provis ion of CareersEducation and Guidance. When a young person reaches their f inal year, weestabl ish a transit ion plan, which involves the young person, parents,teachers and the school ' s Connexions Adviser to look at possible options forthe young person when they leave Ummid.
Work Experience
Work experience is offered in partnership with Bradford & Distr ict PRU withthe aim of providing young people with opportunit ies to develop ski l ls at anappropriate level and pace.
Health and Safety
The school has a Health and Safety pol icy, which ensures the safety andwellbeing of al l young people, staff and vis itors.

Child Protection
The school fol lows the Bradford Safeguarding Chi ld Protection ethos andprocedures. There are 5 trained Designated Senior Persons in the school whoare responsible for Chi ld Protection issues. Al l staff are trained in Chi ldProtection training, and other safeguarding related matters. Staff undertakecontinual professional development in Chi ld Protection.
Equal opportunit ies and the values of the school
The school is committed to a pol icy of equal opportunit ies for al l youngpeople, staff and others who come into contact with the school regardless ofrace, colour, gender, sexual orientation, rel igion or disabi l ity. Everyonevis it ing, working or learning in the school should feel welcome, secure andconfident at al l t imes. They should feel valued and able to participate ful lyin the l i fe of the school.

If any parent, carer or other person wishes to make a complaint they shouldcontact the school either by telephone or letter and the complaint wil l beinvestigated and responded to within the t ime specif ied in the complaintspol icy.
