DESCRIPTION

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educational outreach has become a top priority in promoting educational equality and opportunities for underpriviliged students. The University of Miami's (UM) Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) partners with UM's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and the Miami Science Museum's Upward Bound program to provide top-notch marine biology research opportunities to low-income, first generation college bound students. This firsthand exposure to research promotes knowledge of ecosystems throughout Latin America and the Caribbean via the implementation of STEM outreach initiatives and educational opportunities for K-12 public school students in Miami Dade County.
