Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Week 7!
Student Leadership 2018
This week is the beginning of a very important journey for our
Year 5 students. Our Year 5 teachers along with Mr. Burns
spoke to Year 5 students about the opportunity to apply for
the UPS student leadership group for 2018. Being a prefect or
school captain is a valuable and highly coveted position within
the school. I encourage all students to take up this
opportunity. The skills you develop within these roles are ones
that will positively influence your academic and social
development. In addition, you will have a lot of fun and get
some very special privileges!
Attendance
Ulladulla Public has an important obligation to monitor the
attendance of all students. Sometimes you will receive a
phone call and/or letter from your child’s teacher if you have
not explained your child’s absence. As a parent, you must;
Provide a valid explanation (phone call or note) as to why your
child is away (e.g. being sick).
If your child is away for a number of days, can you please call
the school at 4455 1649 and provide us with an update.
Each term a Home School Liaison Officer from the Department
of Education visits our school. Their role is to monitor
attendance and to provide follow up with families who have
not explained their child’s absences. This can result in a
number of consequences to parents.
Father’s Day Stall
Our amazing P&C will be running a Father’s Day stall this week
on Wednesday, 30th and Thursday, 31st August. All students
will have the opportunity to purchase from the stall. Gifts
range from $2 to $6 in price.
Obstacle Course Athon (Primary) & Read Athon (Infants)
A note will go home outlining all of the major prizes students
can win for fundraising for this year’s Athons.
The prizes include iPads for our highest fundraiser in Primary
and Infants.
Primary students are collecting sponsors for their Obstacle
Course Athon, which will run on Monday 11th September.
Primary students can be sponsored per lap they complete.
Infants will also get the opportunity to run the obstacle
course.
Infants students are collecting sponsors for their Read Athon
and can be sponsored by the books they read or are read to by
family and friends. Alternatively, you can sponsor a student
via a one off donation.
All monies raised from the ‘Athons’ will go to further
developing our Primary and Infants playground. Last year it
was communicated to our school community that money
raised from the ‘Athons’ would go to a large climbing frame to
be located on the school oval. Unfortunately, due to extensive
costs associated with this venture, it has proved to be not
viable. This means this that monies raised from the 2016 and
2017 ‘Athons’ will be combined and used to update our school
playgrounds. Inside this newsletter, you will find a brief survey
that gives you the opportunity to share your thoughts about
what we need to add to our school playground.
The Ulladulla Milton Lions Club
Thank you to Mr. Allan McDonald from the Ulladulla Milton
Lions Club for their generous donation of books for our school
library.
Have a great week!

UPS is participating in the Woolworths Earn and Learn program again this year. Green boxes are available at the front of the store or in the school office to deposit your stickers. Thank you to the many students and families that have already contributed.
3D students will be tracking our progress every week. This week we managed to collect 6600 stickers. The new total is 26,420 stickers.
There are only 2 1/2 weeks remaining, with the Earn and Learn promotion ending on 19th September, so please keep collecting stickers for our school.

Environmental Month
During September, to mark the end of Winter and the coming of Spring, Ulladulla Public School will be celebrating the success of the many different environmental programs we run throughout our school and local community during the year, as well as using the month to highlight the continuing need to care for our environment.
Your child will be invited to take part in some of the following events over the month of September.
K-6 ‘Nude Food Month’ - Package free lunch boxes
K-6 ‘Fruit and Veg Month’ - Both of these programs help support the schools food scrap composting program.
K-6 ‘The Big Ullabaloo Floating Lantern Project’ ARTFEST - Entries from Week 8 up until Week 10
K-6 ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ Mural - Using round plastic bottle tops of different colours and sizes, students will design and create a ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ mural on the western wall of Block F (Kindergarten rooms).
K-4 ‘Wattle Day’ competition - Entries close on Friday 8th September. Grade prizes.
Yr 4 ‘Pebbly Beach’ annual Forest Feral excursion.
Yr 3-4 ‘ Millards Creek Bushcare’ regeneration native planting project.
Yr 5-6 ‘Threatened Species drawing competition’ Shoalhaven City Council. Entries close Wednesday 30th August. (Please note, entries are due the week before ‘Enviro Month’) Individual, class and grade prizes.
Yr 5-6 ‘Shorebirds Mural’ With assistance from Julie Sydenham (House of Jules Art Studio) students from Yr 5 and 6 will design and paint a mural depicting the need to protect our local shorebird populations.
The ‘Nude Food’ program encourages families who send lunches to school, to use less, little, or no throwaway packaging for the month of September in the hope that it becomes a consistent habit.
‘Fruit and Veg’ Month will run through the month of September. The children will be encouraged to bring fruit and veggies to eat especially at ‘Crunch and Sip’ time in the morning. Woolworths (Ulladulla) will be kindly donating boxes of ‘Fruit and Veg’ each week to support this Healthy Kids Association initiative.
The Big Ullabaloo Floating Lantern’ as part of the ‘Escape Art Fest’ - Students are invited to build a lantern that can float from materials that will eventually break down and not harm our environment. This could be tissues, paper straws, cane, recycled materials or other bits and pieces, even used egg shells. The sky is the limit! Entries will go on display in the school Library and with permission, entered into the ‘Escape Art Fest’ held during the holidays later in September. With the chance of winning the $1000 first prize.
‘Take 3 for the Sea Mural’ This exciting mural will need hundreds of round plastic bottle tops of different colours and sizes collected by students and brought to school in bags of 50 approx. For each bag of plastic bottle tops, the student’s name will be entered into a special bingo style draw to win some fantastic prizes. Each class will be joining in the spirit of the month by either talking about or doing something sustainable over the month. What are you waiting for come on and join the fun!

Girls’ Touch Football PSSA State KO Rounds 4 and 5.
On Friday, 18th August, Ulladulla PS Girls’ Touch Team played Tathra PS in their Rd. 4
PSSA State KO match at the Lighthouse Oval in some very cold and blustery conditions.
The team combined very well in trying conditions, with a score-line of ten to nil at the
full-time whistle, in Ulladulla’s favour.
Last Friday, 25th August, the Ulladulla Girls’ Touch Team travelled to Batemans Bay for
their Rd. 5 match. It was a very exciting game with Batemans Bay opening the scoring
after 25 seconds. Ulladulla settled into their patterns and continued to apply pressure in
both attack and defence. At fulltime the scores were Ulladulla 6 to Batemans Bay 1.
The Girls’ now proceed to Rd. 6 of the NSW PSSA Girls’ Touch Football 2017 Competi-
tion against opponents that are yet to be confirmed..
NSW Touch Football Association GALA Day.
On the 23rd August 2017, last Wednesday, 53 students travelled by bus to Frogs’ Holla
for their 2017 Stage 3 Touch Football Gala Day, ran by the NSW Touch Football
Association and the Milton- Ulladulla Touch Football Association.
We joined up with students from Milton PS and Sussex Inlet PS.
The students started their games at 10am and our last game wound up at 1:20pm.
We all had a wonderful time and greatly enjoyed the opportunity provided to us.
The students and teachers were all very grateful to the associations for providing us
with this opportunity.
