ReportfromourPresident–LindyBonserTodayisourfirstdayofreallygoodrainsoInotyearningtobeoutinmygarden.I’velitthefireforthefirsttimethisyearandmynextcallwillbetomywoodmanasI’mrapidlymakingmywaythroughtheleftoversfromlastyear’swoodpile.Myhusbandsometimescomplainstomeabouthowhotitgetsinthehousewiththefiregoing,butIthenremindhimoftheoldsaying‘Happywife,happylife’.

OurrecentmovetotheMollymookGolfClubhasbeenreasonablysmooth.TheseatingarrangementstillneedssomeattentionbutIwouldliketothankallourmembersforyourpatienceandunderstandingwhilethistransitiontakesplace.Insayingthat,pleasebearinmindthattheseatingarrangementwillbedifferentagainfortheMaymeetingastheGolfClubkitchenisundergoingrenovations.Youwillbeseatedattablesinadiningroomstylesoifyouwishtostayonforlunchafterthemeetingyoucansimplystayatthetable.

OurMaymeetingwillstartat9.00amandmorningteawillbeservedonarrival.Themeetingwillbeabitshorterduetothestaffneedingtosetupforlunch.PleasenotethischangeisonlyfortheMaymeeting.

Membershipfeesarenowoverduesoifyou’renotsureifyouhavepaidyourfeespleasecheckwithourfriendlyTreasurerJohnSteadmanandhewillletyouknowifyouareafinancialmemberofnot.

IhopeeveryonehasbeenlookingatthescheduleforourupcomingGCAConventioninNovember.Haveyouselectedthefunctionsyouaregoingtoattendthoughtheweek?Weareworkingsohardtowardstheconventionandforittosucceedwereallyneedthefullcooperationandparticipationofallourmembers.I’mdisappointedIcannotchoose,asIhavetobeateverything.Luckyme!

I’ve just received a boxof plants from thepost office. Thepackage is fromTheDiggers Club inVictoria. The seedlings are called ‘speeding’s as they are grown from seed in a peat plug andindividually packed it a specific plastic packaging, quiet interesting. The plants are Digitalis orFoxglovescalled‘Pam’ssplit’anddwarfdelphiniums.I’vepottedthemupandtheyareoutonthedeckgettinglotsofloveuntiltheygointothegarden.Gardeningisgreat.

Planning:Averyhotsummerhascauseddistressinmanyareaswithplantslostordamaged.Perhapsconsiderarethinkoflayoutand/orplantselection.Coolermonthsareidealfortacklingphysicallydemandingjobs.‘Stayathomeandworkinthegarden’willbethemottofollowedbymanyreadingthisarticle.

Compost:Turncompostandalwayskeepitsightlymoist.Rakeandgatherfallenleaves,treatingthisasadailyexercise.

Lawns:Shouldhaverecoveredfromthesummerstress.Inwarmerareasitisnottoolatetofertilisewithaproductthatencouragesstrongrootgrowth.Don’tmowifthereisnosignofleafgrowth.

Pests:Spraydeciduousfruittreesandshrubsforinsectpests.OverwinteringnymphalstagesoforangecitrusbugandscaleinsectscanbesprayedwithPestOil.Rosestooareaffectedbyscaleinsectsandwillrequiresprayingwithlimesulphurwhilestillgarofleaves.Checkforslugsandsnails;theyareverypartialtomanyspecialplants.

Prune:Rosesinlatewinterbutchecktiminginfrost-affectedareas.Don’tforgetthatsomeroseshaveveryattractivehipsthatbecomefeaturesinthewintergardensoleaveforlaterpruning.Prunemanydeciduoustreesandshrubsbutwaituntilafterfloweringtotrimthosethatbloominspring.Examineplantscarefully,removingdead,damagedandcrossingbranches,allowingmorelighttopenetratethecentre.Prunenativeshrubsafterflowering.PrunegrassesandperennialstothegrownIlatewinteranddecideifdivisionandreplantingisrequired.Takecuttingsfromperennialsforfutureneeds.RemovespentflowerstemsfromAutumnbulbsandapplyliquidfertiliserwhileleavesarestillpresent.

Planting:Bare-rooteddeciduoustrees,shrubs,rosesarenowavailableinnurseriesorbymailorder.Choosecarefullynotingthosemostsuitedtoyourarea.Plantswithberries–yellow,orange,red,blue,purple–areworthgrowinginappropriateareasetc,hawthornornativeblueberryashElaeocarpusreticulartus.Climbersarereturningtopopularity,nodoubtduetothenumberofsmallergardenswhereverticalareascanbeclothedinfoliageandflowers.Inwarmerareasofthecountry,springfloweringbulbscanstillbeplanted.Markpositionasmanybulbsarespade/forkdamagedduringlaterplantings.Preparevegetableandherbgardensforspringplanting.

YoumayhavereadofourplantingofthebulbsintheChildren’sMemorialGardeninMollymookCemetery.Manythankstothosewhoassistedontheday,andtothememberswhosupportedtheprojectbysupplyingthebulbs.Wemetwiththeresidentmaintenancegardenerandhehaspromisedtoattendtothebulbswithlovingcare.

ImetwiththeMichelleBabington,thenewCivicCentreManager,anddiscussedourprogramfortheNovemberConvention.Michelleisamostcapableladyandkeentoensurethatourweekrunssmoothly.Ofcourse,thecostofthevenuewasdiscussed,andwenowhaveouroriginalquotehonoured;ahugedifference.Sunday’scostdownfrom$1800.00to$650.00fortheauditorium,from$400to$200forthekitchen,cleaning$45,andsetup$45perhourperemployee,remainthesame.Removalofrubbishfrom$50to$45.Itpaystohaveacoffee&achat!

IwouldlikeallGardenClubmemberstobeawarethatthisfunctionroomisavailablefreeofchargetoallmembersoftheGolfClub.Wehavenegotiatedthisfacilityonthatpremise.TheGolfClubpaysanadditionaltaxonNon-membersusingthisvenue.AreyouamemberofthisGolfClub?Youareabletoattendoccasionallyasanon-member,butitisexactlythesameasourClub,youmayattend3timesasavisitorandthenyouareaskedtojointherelevantClub.IfyouarehavingdifficultyinadheringtotheserequirementspleasespeaktoPresidentLindyonthematter.

Inregardstoourexcursions,daytrips,extendedtoursetc,theseactivitiesareforfinancialmembersonly.Non-membersmayenjoythecoffeemornings,specialfundraisingfunctions/luncheons/ChristmasParties/BirthdayLuncheons,orattendourmeetingsonanon-regularbasis,butitwouldbeunderstoodthattheattendeeisintendingjoiningourClub.

OurSponsoredStudentProgram(seenextpagelistingsponsorsetc)hasbeenverywellreceivedandtodatewehave34sponsorsandthatequatestoacceptanceof34students.IbelievethatIhavecontactedeveryTAFEwithinAustraliaandmostseemverykeenfortheirstudentstobeinvolved.Tamworth&Wollongong&MoruyaStudentshaveenrolledandalonestudentfromKurriKurriiskeentoattend.StudentsfromBrisbaneareendeavouringtoraisefundsfortheirtravelarrangements.Canberraisholdingacompetitionforstudentstoattend.
