Both cities with transport challengesStrong transport links between twoplaces
The Project
UK Autodrive will supportthe introduction of driverlessvehicles into the UK.
Aims of Programme
• Validate driverless technology
• Develop interoperability of technologies andinteraction with other road users
• Demonstrate how solutions can be scaled todifferent city / town infrastructures
• Increase public and awareness and acceptance ofdriverless vehicles
• Promote zero-emission urban vehicle technology
• Develop new business models for new mobilityservices
• Position the UK as a world leader and global hubfor technology development
Cities
• Shared automotive heritage
• Complementary urban designs
• Demonstrate results are transferable and scalable
• Provide links with existing transport projects
Technology
Driverless vehicle technologies are nowsufficiently mature to move from laboratoryand test-track into the real world.
• Accelerate introduction of driverless technologies
• Demonstrate car-to-car and car-to-infrastructurecommunication technologies
• Provide solutions to technological challenges
Project Structure• Driverless Cars (M1)• L-SATS (Low Speed Autonomous Transport System)• Cities Programme
M1 Autonomous Cars
Lead Partners• JLR• TATA• Ford• Thales
Primary AimTo demonstrate autonomous cars operating on a variety ofpublic roads in Coventry and Milton Keynes
L-SATS
Lead Partners• RDM• JLR• Oxbotica
Primary AimTo deliver a low speed autonomous transport system inMilton KeynesComprising of 40-50 vehicles (PODS) that operate in thereal urban environment
Cities Programme
Lead Partners• Milton Keynes Council• Cambridge University• Oxford University – Mobile Robotics Group• Open University• Thales• Coventry City Council
Primary AimTo determine long term benefits and application of autonomous vehiclesto the urban environment
Cities Programme – Roles and Activities
Milton Keynes Council• Client city – co ordinating activities,• Provider of ‘infrastructure’/facilitator of trials• Local engagement
Coventry• Support City (as above)
Arup• Programme design co ordination and
management
Cambridge University• Large scale impact assessment• Public attitude research• Business case development (LSATS)• Assessing impact on highway network• Modelling (simulation of networks)
Oxford University (MRG)• Scalability of systems• Development of autonomous controls (at scale)
Open University (MK)• Dissemination of data /information• Linking to wider MK Smart project• Public engagement
Thales• Technical advisor on ITS/systems• Looking at infrastructure and system• Link to wider security and safety systems*
Cities Work Packages - Planned Outcomes
What’s in it for the city (and beyond)
• Future highway network design standards
• Social benefits (Mobility and Safety)
• Business case for scaling up transport systems
• Public Awareness and Acceptability
• Future technological needs for ITS systems
