UICapture on Windows - Creators Basic Guide

All University Classrooms (UCR) is equipped with the recording software known as the Panopto

Recorder on Windows and Mac workstations. To test or record outside of a University

Classroom, download the software client from https://teach.uiowa.edu/UICapture/Download.

After downloading the software, you will be able to log into the Panopto Recorder with your

HawkID credentials and record audio, video, Keynote, and PowerPoint presentations. You also

have screen capture functionality within the Recorder.

UICapture requires one audio source to produce a viable recording; therefore, some type of

hardware such as a microphone or webcam with a built-in microphone is necessary for capture

purposes.

Logging In The Web Interface

1. Navigate to https://uicapture.hosted.panopto.com/

2. In the upper right-hand corner of the page, click Sign in then enter your HawkID

credentials.

Logging In The Windows Recorder

1. Click on the Start Menu button in the lower-left corner of the taskbar.

2. Locate the Panopto folder.

3. Select the Panopto application

4. Enter your HawkID and Password in the Fields that appear

a. If you need to change the server you are connecting to use the More sign-in

options button in the lower right corner.

Logging In Changing the Server

1. If you need to change the Panopto server you are connecting to click on More

sign-in options in the lower right corner of the application.

2. Enter the correct server and click Apply

• For UICapture the address is https://uicapture.hosted.panopto.com

3. Click the Sign in with HawkID

Finding Folders The Web Interface

1. All Folders you have access to can be found under Browse

2. Course folders are nested beneath the University of Iowa > College > Department

folders by default.

3. New folders can be created by Departmental Admins or by using the ICON

Integration

All Folders: Folders that you

have at least permission to View

My Folders: Folders that you

have permission to Create in.

Creating Folders The Web Interface

In UICapture you can create a new folder in any location you have creator access in.

1. Navigate to a folder where you have creator access.

2. Click the Create button at the top of the window.

3. Select New Folder at the bottom of the list to create the folder.

Creating Folders Assignment Folders

Assignment folders are sub-folders that give Viewers (Students) permission to create and

record new sessions.

1. Navigate to the course folder you would like to hold the assignment folder.

2. Open the Settings for the folder and navigate to the Overview tab.

3. Click the Create Assignment Folder button to create the assignment folder and

assign viewers in the parent creator rights in this new folder.

4. When you are ready to close the assignment, go back to the settings, and click the

Close button under the Overview tab in the Assignment Folder section.

Creating Folders The ICON Integration

1. Open your ICON course and navigate to your course settings.

2. Open the Navigation tab and locate the UICapture tool.

3. Select the three dots to the right of the line and select Enable.

4. Click Save at the bottom of the page

5. Click UICapture in the column to the left of the course page to create your new

course folder.

a. Opening the tool in your course will create a new integrated folder with a

group that will assign Teachers, TAs and Course Designers the Creator

permission level and another group that will place all others (Students,

etc.) in the Viewer role.

Recording Starting from the Web Interface

1. Navigate to the folder you would like to record into

2. Click on the Create drop down at the top of the window

3. Select Record a new session.

• This will either open the Panopto Recorder or prompt you to install it.

Recording with Panopto Starting from the ICON Integration

1. You can access your course folder through the ICON integration.

2. Click on the Create dropdown.

3. Select Record a new session to launch the recorder.

Recording Starting from the Recorder

1. Once you have logged in, select the Folder you would like to record to, then name the

session. Set up your Primary Sources (Webcam/Microphone) and Secondary Sources

(Screen Capture/PowerPoint).

You may need to configure the above options to account for available system resources on your

computer. We recommend starting with the defaults that come pre-configured and adjusting the

quality up as your computer can support.

If you see the above note, please

verify that your audio source is

audible in a test recording.

2. Click the Record (F8) button once you are ready to start recording

3. While you are recording, you can Pause (F9) the recording. The software will continue to

record, but the section between pausing and unpausing will be edited out.

4. After you have captured the content you wish to share; you can use the Stop (F10) button

to finalize the recording.

5. You will be given the option to rename and change the description of the session after

stopping. You will also be able to submit or discard the session to record it again.

• If you discard/delete the session, it is not able to be recovered.

6. You will then be taken automatically to the Manage Recordings tab.

• You will be able to watch the progress as your recording is uploaded (the blue bar)

and verified (the black bar) on the server.

• Once you see Waiting to be processed in the Status/Link column, you can safely

close the Panopto Recorder and log out of your machine.

Recording Recording Offline

1. When logging into the Panopto recorder, select the Remember Me checkbox. You must

log in once with your HawkID to enable offline recording.

2. When you finish recording a session, do not log out of the application. If you log out, you

will not be able to record offline until you can access the internet to log in again.

3. Once you have a stable internet connection again, you can upload your recordings under

the Manage Recordings tab in the Panopto Recorder.

NOTE: When you finish a recording, and you are uploading the session, be sure that you do not

log out of the computer until the upload has finished. This will ensure that your session is available

promptly. Once you see that the session is processing you can log out of the computer without

disrupting the upload. You do not need to wait until the session has completed processing.

Editing with UICapture Trimming

The most common edit to make to a video uploaded to UICapture is to trim the start and end of

the content. To do this, you will select the Scissors tool within the editor

1. Locate the video you would like to edit and select the Edit button.

2. Once you are in the editor, locate the places you would like to trim the video within the

timeline.

3. Click and drag your mouse over the section you would like to remove from playback.

4. To undo a change, select the undo button at the top of the window.

5. When you are completely done editing your session, click Apply.

Editing with UICapture Captions

1. Open the UICapture Editor for the session you would like to enable Auto Captions on.

2. Click on the Captions tab to the left and

click Import Captions.

3. Select Import Automatic Captions

Sharing For the Web

You can share both individual sessions or folders with a link or embedded in a web page.

You can also invite individuals to view the content you have creator access to.

1. Navigate to the folder you would like to share from and select the share button at the top

of the page to share the folder or beside the session to share an individual session

2. Select how you would like to share:

a. Link: copy the link from under the Link tab

b. Embed: Copy the embed code from under the Embed tab

c. Invitation: Enter an individual’s HawkID and select the line that reads

unified\HawkID format.

Sharing For ICON

1. In a location where the ICON Rich Content Editor (RCE) is available, select the More

External Tools.

2. Select UICapture from that dropdown.

3. Select the session that you would like to embed.

4. Click Insert.

• The integration will handle assigning permissions to the session as students access the

content.

5. You can edit how the frame appears within the HTML Editor.
