WELCOME

Dear Colleagues,

It is with pleasure that we invite you to the 6th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Urogynaecological Society of Australasia (UGSA) to be held in Sydney from Wednesday 12th –Sunday 15th March 2015.

Following the unprecedented success of our last ASM and various workshops; it is now more obvious than ever that there is a growing need for evidence-based medicine teaching as well as hands on practical training in urogynaecology in Australasia. As a result, UGSA has forged forwards with the idea of combining both aspects of clinical education in our upcoming Annual Scientific Meeting.

Not only have we invited key opinion leaders from various corners of the world to provide state of the art lectures, discussion forums and debates; an array of workshops/courses for delegates on how to repair anal sphincter injuries, manage pessaries and understanding urodynamics. There is also a one day post-graduate urogynaecology training course.

UGSA has received excellent support from industry that has allowed us to deliver education in an affordable manner. All we ask of you is to spread the word around to your colleagues and trainees; and make the event as successful as possible.

Ingrid Nygaard, MD is a board certified, fellowship trained Urogynecologist. After practicing in the area of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Iowa for 15 years, she joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 2006. Her clinical practice focuses on the care of women with pelvic floor disorders, including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and problems related to childbirth and to complications of other pelvic surgeries.

With her partners, she offers the full spectrum of non-surgical, surgical and diagnostic care for women with these disorders. She is a past-president of the American Urogynecologic Society. Dr. Nygaard completed her residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan and her fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The primary focus of her research, conducted with investigators from Bioengineering, Exercise Science and Biostatistics, is to understand the association between physical activity and pelvic floor disorders in women. She also conducts clinical trials to compare the effectiveness of different therapies for pelvic floor disorders.

Mr. PhIl toozS-hobSon (UK)Phil has been in practice as a consultant in the West Midlands at Birmingham’s Women’s hospital since 2000 and is currently the Clinical director of Gynaecology and theatres.

He has been the lead clinician in Urogynaecology for nearly 12 years and he has established a tertiary referral unit. He runs one of only 17 Urogynaecology subspecialty training programmes in the UK.

Whilst Phil has been a clinician first and foremost he has also contributed significantly to developing knowledge through leading a research programme. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers, guidelines and reviews.

Dr. nAthAn GUErEttE (USA)

Dr. Guerette is the former Director of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital and Assistant Professor for the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Guerette also served as Associate Program Director of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Drexel / Hahnemann University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York before completing a dual residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine.

Dr. Guerette subsequently continued his training at the Cleveland Clinic, completing a three-year fellowship in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. He is the first formally trained Urogynecologist in Central Virginia and has special expertise in da Vinci Robotic reconstruction and advanced vaginal pelvic reconstruction. Dr. Guerette has published and presented both nationally and internationally on some 60 topics related to Urogynecology and contributed significant original research in his field.
