Girls and boys havethe same abilities

Some tribes in Kenya have thefollowing beliefs that are notbased on the truth. Say No tobeliefs that can lead you intodanger and that discriminateboys and girls.

Girls are not allowed to grow trees. Ifthey do, a boy who cuts it will dieand the girl would not get childrenwhen she marries. By Dickson

Biological roles for girls/women include: Getting pregnant Breast-feedingThere are however social roles that

are determined by society.

Pupils of Musasa and Shigalagala PriSch in Kakamega talked to SV

journalists about duties believed to beof girls and of boys, at home and atschool.

You may notice that some of theduties were mentioned for both girls

and boys. So are there duties meantfor girls and duties for boys?

Club activityWithout considering the biological roles, think, lookaround and write down duties carried by boys andgirls both at home and at school.

Discuss the roles that girls can play that boys cannot

and what boys can do and that girls cannot do.Do you consider boys and girls equal?

Girls: Do not allow anyone to put you

down. Be assertive. (Say what youstand for and stick to it).

Work hard. You are as equallybright as the boys

Look after yourselves well and keepclean

Get involved in activities aroundyou. Do not be idle.

Boys: Respect girls, they are your sisters,

your mothers. Help each other (both girls and

boys) in areas where one is weak.

Clean uphere. It is

your duty asa girl.

You have no rightto order me around.

Besides you can alsoclean up. Who told

you boys cannot cleanthe place?

What girls and boys do isdecided by society. Society is made upof people. This also means that peoplecan still change the beliefs they haveabout girls and boys. They can alsochange the roles both play.
