    Chapter 1

    Xilinx Documentation Navigator

    User Guide

    Overview

The Xilinx Documentation Navigatorprovides an intuitive and powerful tool for navigating, viewing, and

searchingXilinxtechnical documentation. Documentation Navigatoris optimally designed to supportviewing and managing PDF documents. The tool can open documents located on the Web or documents

downloaded to the users desktop. The title, location, size, published date, and status of the available

documents are displayed in the Grid Viewof the Catalog Viewermaking it easy to browse through the

list of documents. TheDownload Managergreatly simplifies the process for downloading documents

and keeping the local files up to date as new document revisions are published on theXilinxweb site.

Documentation Navigatorincludes several features that streamline navigating the broad array of

technical documentation provided byXilinx. The Filter Panelallows the user to quickly filter the set of

documents displayed in the Grid Viewbased on product, documentation type, and functional category.

The Find Baris useful for finding a document by searching for text in the document titles or descriptions.

The Auto Filteringfeature automatically filters the documents displayed in the Grid Viewbased on the

text entered into the Find Bartext field. The Search Toolfeature is used to search inside all or a filteredlist of documents for particular keywords and is particularly useful for finding which documents contain

information on a certain topic or technical area. Multiple documents can be opened at the same time

within the same window which allows users to efficiently switch between documents. TheDocument

Trayprovides additional functionality for finding and opening frequently visited documents.

To keep up to date on the introduction of new documents and revisions to existing documents, the

Documentation Navigatorrelies on regular access to the Internet. This ensures users know about new

documents as soon as they are released and are always accessing the latest documentation. At the same

time, Documentation Navigatormakes it easy to work without Internet access, assuming documents

    are downloaded locally.

Documentation Navigator is automatically installed as part of the Vivado Design Suite and can be

launched directly from the Vivado Design Suite IDE or Documentation Navigatorcan be installed

standalone and used independently of any other Xilinx tools.

    Catalog Viewer

The primary function of the Catalog Vieweris to provide access to Xilinx technical documentation.

The Grid Viewdisplays the available documentation in the form of links to PDF documents andHTML pages.

    using.

    Application Data Directory

The Application Data Directoryis where Documentation Navigatorstores application data in a user-

    specific location.

The location is automatically determined when the application starts up based on standardsystem settings.

To view the location of the Application Data Directory, open the Runtime Environment tab inthe Settings Dialog.

Each machine a user works on has a different Application Data Directory. Some files found in the Application Data Directorylike the Document Catalogand the Search Index files

are downloaded from theXilinxwebsite during catalog updates.

Several of the files in this Application Data Directoryare copied from the installation directorythe first time the application is run.o These files are often updated each time the application opens and closes.o If a file appears corrupted, delete it. The file is copied again from the installation directory

the next time the application is run.

Other files in this directory are created the first time the application is run and then updated aschanges are made.

Normally, the files in the Application Data Directoryare not affected when moving betweenversions of the application.

o This means user settings are preserved when moving from one version of the application tothe next.

Downloadsare recorded in a file named downl oads. xml which is read each time the applicationstarts up.

This file is updated programmatically and is not intended for direct editing. If a special situation arises where the download directory needs to be moved to a different

location follow this procedure.o Close the application.o Using Windows Explorer or a system level command prompt, copy the download directory

    tree to a new location.

o Make a copy of the downl oads. xml file located in the Application Data Directoryin caseit needs to be restored.

o Edit the downl oads. xml and replace all instances of the original download directory pathwith the new download directory location.

o Reopen the application to verify the new locations are now in use. To copy all of the downloaded documents from one machine to another machine perform the

following steps.o Using Windows Explorer or a system-level command prompt, copy the download directory

tree to a new location on another machine.

o Copy the downl oads. xml file in the Application Data Directoryon the source machine tothe Application Data Directoryon the destination machine.

o Edit the downl oads. xml file on the destination machine and replace all instances of theoriginal download directory used on the source machine with the new download directory

    Shared Downloads

Shared Downloadsis a new feature introduced in the 2012.3 release which allows multiple users to

share the same set of downloaded documents.

In this mode, users access and open a common set of downloaded documents from a sharednetwork directory.

o All users must have read access to the shared network directory.o Multiple users can have the same document open at the same time.o Downloading new versions of documents is allowed even if others users may have the

    previous version still open.

The Shared Downloadsfeature also allows multiple users to download documents.o All users who download documents must have write access to the shared network

directory.o If a user downloads a new version of a document that another user alreadydownloaded, the old version is removed the next time the original user who

downloaded the document synchronizes or reopens the application.o The more users downloading documents the more processing time is necessary to

    coordinate downloads.

To enable the Shared Downloadsfeature, open the Shared Downloads tab in the SettingsDialog.

o Check the Enable Shared Downloads checkbox and specify an existing networkdirectory that is shareable.

o Documents previously downloaded to the local Download Directory remain in placebut these documents are not available from within the Documentation Navigatorwhile

the Shared Downloadsfeature is turned on.

When this feature is in operation the application periodically checks the Shared DownloadDirectoryto see if other users have downloaded documents.

o This check is only run when the Catalog Vieweris visible and only when the user is notactively interacting with the application.

o This check is also run automatically whenever the user opens the Download Managerinorder to avoid downloading documents already downloaded by another user.

o If the application detects other users have downloaded new documents, the toolbaricon indicates change from green to orange.

o Click the toolbar icon to synchronize the Grid Viewwith any newly downloadeddocuments.

Deleting download documents is not allowed when the Shared Downloadsfeature is enabled.o This avoids issues with one user deleting documents that other users may still be using.

Users only share downloaded documents.o Other settings like user preferences, catalog management, filters, and so on are all

specific to each individual user and are not affected when using the Shared Downloads

    feature.

When using the Shared Downloadsfeature, there are some additional data files created.o In the Shared Download Directory, separate XML files are created for each user who

    downloads documents.

These XML files record the download data for a single user and point to fileslocated underneath a user-specific directory in the Shared Download Directory.

Other users read this data to determine what downloaded documents areavailable.

If a user downloads documents from different machines then additional XMLfiles are created.

o The shar ed- downl oads. xml file located in the Application Data Directorystoresthe data for all the documents downloaded to the Shared Download Directory.

This file is updated whenever a user downloads documents directly. Each time the application opens the shar ed- downl oads. xml file is updated

(or synchronized) to reflect any new downloads performed by other users.

While an application is open, the user can trigger this synchronization step usingthe Synchronize Downloads button on the toolbar.

o If the download information appears corrupted, close the application and delete theshar ed- downl oads. xml file located in Application Data Directory.

On reopening the application, the file is regenerated using the data stored in allthe XML files stored in Shared Download Directory.
