Match backgroundEleven years on from their dramatic showdown in the UEFA Champions League final, FC Bayern München andValencia CF renew acquaintances at the start of a new competition.

Previous meetings• The 2001 final in Milan was all about penalties. Captains Gaizka Mendieta and Stefan Effenberg swapped spot kicksin normal time and then goalkeeper Oliver Kahn denied Mauricio Pellegrino – now Valencia coach – in the shoot-outto secure a 5-4 Bayern win and a fourth European title.

• The lineups on 23 May 2001 were:Bayern: Kahn, Sagnol (Jancker 46) Kuffour, Andersson, Linke, Lizarazu, Hargreaves, Effenberg, Scholl (Sérgio 108),Salihamidžić, Élber (Zickler 100).Valencia: Cañizares, Angloma, Ayala (Djukić 90), Pellegrino, Carboni, Mendieta, Baraja, Kily González, Aimar,(Albelda 46), Sánchez (Zahovič 66), Carew.

• Three of the teams' other six encounters also ended 1-1, including both group matches in the 1999/2000 UEFAChampions League. A 1996/97 UEFA Cup first round tie was decided by Valencia's 3-0 home victory, Bayern winning1-0 in Germany.

• That was also the Munich score in the 1967/68 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals, the first leg in Valenciahaving ended 1-1.

Match background• Last season Bayern overcame two Spanish sides on the way to the final where, at their own Fußball Arena München, they lost on penalties to Chelsea FC. They beat Villarreal CF in the group stage, winning 2-0 away on matchday oneand 3-1 at home. They then ousted Real Madrid CF on penalties in the semi-finals after both legs ended 2-1 to thehome side.

• Bayern looked set to lift the trophy in front of their own fans when Thomas Müller gave them an 83rd-minute lead inthe final but Didier Drogba levelled. In extra time Petr Čech saved Arjen Robben's spot kick and then denied IvicaOlić and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the shoot-out, Drogba then giving Chelsea a 4-3 victory.

• Bayern's home record against Spanish opposition reads W13 D5 L1. Their solitary defeat was a 3-2 reverse againstRC Deportivo La Coruña in 2002/03.

• Bayern posted seven straight home wins in last year's competition, including the play-offs, and have won 14 of theirlast 15 European home games. The blip came in the 2010/11 round of 16 when FC Internazionale Milano won 3-2.

• Two of Bayern's four European Cup final wins came against Spanish sides. In 1973/74, they defeated Club Atléticode Madrid 4-0 in a replay after the first game in Brussels ended 1-1, before the 2001 Valencia triumph.

• Valencia have recorded five wins and ten defeats in 25 games against Bundesliga clubs; in Germany their recordis W1 D2 L8. Their sole victory was a 1-0 group stage triumph at FC Schalke 04 in September 2007.

• A 7-0 reverse at Karlsruher SC in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup second round second leg remains the Blanquinegros'heaviest defeat in UEFA competition.

• Valencia opened last season with a goalless draw at KRC Genk, the first time in eight campaigns they failed to winon matchday one. Their last three opening victories all came away from home.

Team ties• A UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid in 1997/98, Jupp Heynckes also coached Athletic Club twiceand CD Tenerife during his time in Spain. The Bayern coach came up against Valencia on 14 occasions over sevenseasons in the Liga with a record of W5 D2 L7.

• Javi Martínez played against Valencia 12 times during his time at Athletic, registering four victories and two draws. He scored in Athletic's 3-2 win on 18 January 2009.

• There are players on either side who are team-mates at international level: Martínez and Roberto Soldado haveboth represented Spain while Jérémy Mathieu, Adil Rami, Franck Ribéry and Aly Cissokho play for France. LuisGustavo, Rafinha, Diego Alves and Jonas have all been capped by Brazil.

• Soldado and Tino Costa both scored past Manuel Neuer for Valencia against Schalke in the 2010/11 UEFA ChampionsLeague last 16. The goalkeeper had the last laugh as Schalke advanced 4-2 on aggregate.

• Robben was at Real Madrid between 2007 and 2009 with Fernando Gago among his team-mates.

• Moved to Spain, earning Athletic a place in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup. His Tenerife side reached 1996/97 UEFA Cupsemi-finals, earning Heynckes a season at Madrid, whom he led to UEFA Champions League glory but left thatsummer.

• Following a lean spell, stepped in as caretaker manager at Bayern in April 2009 following Jürgen Klinsmann'sdismissal; replaced Bruno Labbadia as Leverkusen coach that summer and began season with a German record runof 24 Bundesliga games unbeaten.
