Match backgroundVfL Wolfsburg and Real Madrid CF are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-final experience as they prepare for the first leg in Germany.
Previous meetings• This is the sides' first meeting – and only Wolfsburg's fifth game against Spanish opposition.
Match backgroundWolfsburg• In their second UEFA Champions League campaign following their 2009/10 debut, Wolfsburg are in the knockoutstages for the first time.
• This is the German club's third quarter-final in a major UEFA competition. Beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Fulham FC inthe 2009/10 UEFA Europa League (1-2 away, 0-1 home), they also lost to SSC Napoli at the same stage of lastseason's competition (1-4 home, 2-2 away).
• Wolfsburg have won all four of their home games in this season's competition, including a 1-0 victory against KAAGent in the round of 16 to complete a 4-2 aggregate success.
• Prior to losing to Napoli, in last season's UEFA Europa League Dieter Hecking's men beat Sporting Clube dePortugal in the round of 32 (2-0 home, 0-0 away) and FC Internazionale Milano (3-1 home, 2-1 away) in the round of16. That Napoli defeat is therefore Wolfsburg's only loss in their last seven European home games; the other sixmatches were all won.
• Wolfsburg have won only one of their four previous games against Spanish opponents – the most recent, when theybeat Villarreal 4-1 at home in the 2009/10 round of 32 second leg for a 6-3 aggregate success. They lost home (2-3)and away (1-2) to Club Atlético de Madrid in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round.
Real Madrid• Madrid are in the quarter-finals for the sixth season in a row – they have won their last five and nine of the last ten.Their European Cup quarter-final record is W26 L6.
• The Merengues are one of two sides still unbeaten in this season's competition, along with FC Barcelona. Theiraway record this term is W3 D1.
• The 2-1 loss at Juventus in last season's semi-final first leg is Madrid's only defeat in their last 11 European awaygames, with eight victories in that time.
• Madrid's record in two-legged ties with German clubs in UEFA competition is W12 L8. They have won the mostrecent four, scoring 22 goals in the process.
• Madrid have won on three of their last four trips to Germany, but before that had managed only one victory in theirprevious 25 – a run that included 18 defeats. Their record away to Bundesliga clubs is now P28 W4 D6 L18; overall itis P60 W28 D10 L22.
• Madrid lost their most recent fixture against German opposition, 4-3 at home to FC Schalke 04 in last season's roundof 16 second leg, yet still prevailed in that tie having triumphed 2-0 away.
Coach and player links• Wolfsburg's Julian Draxler was in the Schalke team beaten by Madrid in the 2013/14 round of 16, losing 6-1 inGelsenkirchen and 3-1 in Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema all scored twice in the first leg,Ronaldo adding two more at the Santiago Bernabéu.
• Toni Kroos scored at the VfL Wolfsburg Arena for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he was on loan from FC BayernMünchen, on 18 April 2009. Wolfsburg went on to win 2-1.

• Daniel Carvajal spent 2012/13 on loan at Leverkusen, recording a draw and two losses against Wolfsburg.
• André Schürrle and Kroos each scored twice as Germany beat a Brazil side containing Marcelo and Luiz Gustavo 7-1 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

FC Nürnberg, VfL Wolfsburg
• Having only made six Bundesliga appearances for Gladbach at the beginning of his career, Hecking's breakthroughcame in the second tier at Hessen Kassel, where he played as striker or attacking midfielder. He spent most of hisplaying time in the second and third divisions but was a Bundesliga regular for one season at Leipzig.
• Having started coaching at Verl in 2000, he guided Lübeck to promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2002 and the2003/04 German Cup semi-finals, stepping down after that season ended in relegation. In 2004 Hecking took over atAachen, who reached the UEFA Cup round of 32 in his first campaign, and ended a 36-year absence from the topflight in 2006, but left three matches into the new season to join Hannover.
• Hecking was at Hannover for almost three years, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2006/07 German Cup beforeresigning in August 2009.
• Returned at Nürnberg that December and avoided relegation to finish sixth in the next season, the third-best everresult in the club's Bundesliga history, with a young İlkay Gündoğan a key part of Hecking's team.
• Hecking left for Wolfsburg in winter 2012/13 and helped the then struggling side avoid relegation. He took the club tothe UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in 2014/15 which also brought his first major piece of silverware, Wolfsburgbeating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the German Cup final and also finishing second in the Bundesliga.

• Born in Marseille to Algerian immigrant parents, Zidane took his first steps towards footballing superstardom atCannes, transferring to Bordeaux in 1992. Blossomed into a French international, scoring twice on his debut againstthe Czech Republic in August 1994.
• Left Bordeaux after helping them reach the 1996 UEFA Cup final and joined Juventus, where he was a Serie Awinner and UEFA Champions League runner-up in each of his first two seasons. Lifted no further trophies, however,in his last three campaigns in Turin prior to a then world-record €78m switch to Madrid in 2001.
• Made up for a lack of club silverware by inspiring France to 1998 FIFA World Cup glory – scoring two headers in theSaint-Denis final against Brazil – and at UEFA EURO 2000, where he was player of the tournament; winner of theBallon d'Or in 1998, he was also voted FIFA World Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003.
• Made it third time lucky in the UEFA Champions League final by hitting a spectacular volleyed winner in Madrid's 2-1victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 showpiece at Hampden Park. Landed the UEFA Super Cup,European/South American Cup and Spanish Liga the following season.
• Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational atthe 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, wasdismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy – the last match of his career.
• Stayed at Madrid in an advisory role, becoming assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season the club claimedtheir tenth European title. Took charge of Real Madrid Castilla for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeededRafael Benítez as head coach.
