Introduction

Moodle is a very popular online learning management platform that is used by

educators, trainers, schools, colleges and educational organizations in general. It's

Open Source, so it's customizable, as well as very easy to use. It allows users to create

their own private website to host their courses. Some of its features are listed here:

Moodle is the first e-Learning platform with access to VDI thanks to the UDS Enterprise

Virtual PC Plugin developed by the University of Malaga in collaboration with the UDS

Enterprise team.

This tool is available at Moodle website and allows you to assign a Windows or Linux

virtual desktop with virtual applications already installed as a didactic resource.

For example, a design course that requires Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Eclipse, can

be published online for students with direct links to virtual desktops and applications.

Therefore, Moodle environment will be more complete and functional, since students

will have all the tools they need to take their courses available through the Moodle

interface.

In this document we will explain how to install and configure the UDS Enterprise Virtual

PC Plugin for Moodle.

Prerequisites

Before installing UDS Enterprise Virtual PC Plugin for Moodle a current Moodle version

must be installed.

After having installed and executed your Moodle website, now is time to install and

configure the UDS Enterprise Virtual PC Plugin.

UDS Enterprise required configuration

Before continuing with the Plugin installation, go to your UDS Enterprise platform and

perform the following tasks.

In your UDS Enterprise dashboard, access "Authenticators" section:

Create a new internal database:

It is important to choose a label for your authenticator, since it will be accessed from

the outside by users. This tag serves as a direct link to the authenticator.

Once the authenticator is created, check it and scroll down to create a user and a

group.

Create the group "moodle_group" and the "admin" user and assign it to the group:

Now you can go back to the Moodle configuration interface and download the Virtual

PC plugin to link your UDS Enterprise platform with your Moodle site.

Moodle Dashboard

1. Download the Plugin

Open the link: https://github.com/evltuma/moodle-mod_virtualpc and choose

MOODLE_31_STABLE in the tab “Branch: master”. Then click on “Clone or

download” to download the file in local.

2. Plugin installation

In the Moodle dashboard, expand "Site administration":

Within the “Site administration” we will open the “Plugins” tab and select "Install plugins".

In the "Install plugin from ZIP file" section, choose a file and select the downloaded

file "MOODLE_31_STABLE.zip". Then, click on "Install plugin from the ZIP file".

If the validation is correct, continue with the Plugin configuration.

3. Plugin configuration

In the Plugin configuration page, you should take into account the following details and

properties:

UDS Server URL: The link to your UDS Enterprise platform. It can an IP or

domain name, depending on your platform and hosting.

UDS Server port number: This field can be set with the value "0".

UDS administrator user: Introduce the user you have created in the Moodle

group in UDS Enterprise. The user must be an administrator

UDS administrator user password: Moodle user password in UDS Enterprise.

Administrator user UDS authenticator tag: The main authenticator label to

which the administrator user belongs and which Moodle uses to access UDS

Enterprise.

Pool filter regular expression: It works as a filter to limit the displayed results

of the available services. For example, "^W.*" filters by service name that

begins with "W" and "W.*" filters by service name that contains "W".

UDS authenticator tag: This tag is used to locate the authenticator where UDS

users will be created through Moodle.

Group name: Name of the group of UDS authenticators where new UDS users

will be created, through Moodle.

When finished, save the changes and exit the configuration.

Publishing a Virtual PC activity

Once the Plugin is properly configured, the next step is publishing it as an activity and

make it visible to students and teachers.

In the control panel, enable "Customize this page". Then, click on "My Courses":

We have already created a category "Miscellaneous". Within this category we have

created a "VPC" course with three assignments, each one offers a different set of

virtual services: Application (LibreOffice), a Windows desktop and a Linux CentOS

desktop.

Each assignment can be hidden or removed and special roles can be assigned through

the “Edit” menu.

For example, when entering Virtual PC, you will see something similar to this:

Clicking on Windows 10 icon, a Windows 10 session will be started in your browser.

Through the list “Add an activity or resource”, you can add new courses or new

activities/assignments to the current course.

Expand the "Add an activity or resource" list and choose "Virtual PC".

Enter a description and choose a name for the Virtual PC activity.

Choose the service you want to link.

NOTE: Green names are filtered due to the regular filter expression Pool "^W.*"

that filters all expressions that do not start with "W".

Select "Paint", and feel free to edit any of the tabs shown below if necessary.

Clicking on “Save and return to course”, the new activity will be displayed in the list:

When you open the "Virtualpaint" activity, a Microsoft Paint window will be opened.
