The interest in mountain biking in theEastern Cape is growing fast. Thissport has also become popular at pri-
mary as well as high school levels, and en-couraged by the Spur School Mountain BikeLeague.
The region offers various spectacular offthe beaten track cycling routes as well as ra-ces. Daniel Pienaar Technical High School inUitenhage, which is the first school in the re-gion who now has its own track. It also offers
mountain biking as a school sport.The official opening and inaugural moun-
tain bike challenge of the DP MTB track isheld today.According to Sampie Marais, organiser of
the event and person responsible for the trackbecoming a reality, the DP mountain bike cy-cling teamwill participate in the forthcomingSpur High Schools League national finals. Itwill be held in Magaliesburg during the firstweekend in October.Today’s DP MTB Challenge comprises a
2.5km distance for kids u.10 (starting time08:30). The 10km & 20km races will both start
at 09:00 and both are open to all mountain bik-ers. Beginners and cyclists justwanting to en-joy the track are most welcome.Action starts and ends at the DP sports
fields at the giant inflatable Klinicare Phar-macies arch. There will be ample parking,rest room facilities, spectator points and re-freshments. As it also is National Braai Day,there will be lots of fires and the public areinvited to bring along whatever they wish tobraai.The race offers lots of lucky prizes andham-
pers with grand medals to all the finishers aswell as to category winners.

With the African Movie Academy Awards(AMAA) which were held in Nelson Man-dela Bay last weekend, 184 nominees fromAfrica, Europe, South America and otherparts of the world walked the red carpet.
This has shown not only that the worldhas its eyes on South Africa’s film industryas the stature of South African films is start-ing to receive a tremendous amount of glob-al recognition, but it also gave local film pro-ducers new hope.Chosen every 5 years by an international
panel,NelsonMandelaBay is set to playhostfor the next five years to the most prestigefilm awards in Africa celebrating the best inthe continent’s film industry.The AMAA honours the men and women
producing more movies a year than Holly-wood.Ironically, the Eastern Cape Film Forum,
directed by Nceba Mqolomba of Radio YaBantu, this weekend hosts a short film net-working and training workshop at the Nel-sonMandelaBayScience&TechnologyCen-tre in Uitenhage.Veteran filmmaker Ben Nomoyi, previ-
ously said during theECFilmFestival, “The
Eastern Cape lacks writers. Our job as film-makers is to breathe life into the writtenword. No written word, no film. I am worriedthat you still work as individuals in your re-spective silos limiting the impact that you canmake.”As an outcomeof theFestival itwas decided
to host monthly workshops and screenings inthe eight respective regions of the province.The first beingatAmahlathiLocalMunicipal-ity in Stutterheim and in Uitenhage on Satur-day.“We are looking for local township films.
The film industry is large and there are localstaking brilliant short films with their cellphones or even cheap cameras.We want to encourage creativity and quali-
ty,” said Mqolomba.Saturday’s programme is free to attend by
all interested in the producing of local films.It starts at 08:30 and will end at 18:00 after thescreening of a feature film “Mandela, TheMan and the Myth”.The workshop will also cover aspects like
documentaries, the link between music andfilm, how to turn an idea into a story, how towrite gripping synopses and the role of filmsin society.

The show, “Whose Line PE” is based on the American TV show called “Whose Line Is ItAnyway”. The live filming will be at Barkly Street Theatre in Uitenhage on November 4th. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South’sWinter Nights 2015 will be remembered
for a long timeasbeing“wonderfully special”.
So said President of the Club,MarilynKlas-senwho is proud of their being able to provideblankets and warm items to approximately3 000 people in need.It all started with the Club receiving over
80 blankets and bags full of warm clothingfrom the public of Uitenhage.This proved to be just the start as BASF, an
international chemistry company withlocations in SA includingPort Elizabeth, cele-brates its 150th anniversary this year.As part of their celebrations, the company
held a global competition entitled “ConnectedtoCare”whereby staff could submit a charita-ble proposal.Chandrika Rathod, Quality Manager of
BASF South Africa’s Mobile Emissions Cata-lysts site in Port Elizabeth, and a member ofthe Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, submit-ted the Club’s Winter Nights project for con-sideration.The project was voted as one of the 150 win-
ning projects world-wide.“This resulted in BASF donating 5 000
Euros to the project. Rotary was able topurchase in excess of 700 blanketswhichwere
provided to destitute people living in thestreets, families living in squatter campswith no electricity and those in need at old-age homes.“More than 1 500 sets of beanies, gloves and
scarfs were handed out to school childrenwhile 500 baby-grows and vests were pur-chased for small children and babies.“In total, over 3 000 people benefited, from
babies to the aged,” said Klassen.Rathod explained that, “during the coldest
months of the year, the temperature in Uiten-hage can drop below zero which can be lifethreatening to homeless people.“They are exposed to the elements as

This beer now for the firsttime, is brewed at Ibayi Brewery,the South African Breweries’plant in Perseverance. A R80 mil-lion new Castle Lite productionline was officially launched atthe plant last week.
This contributed to IbayiBrewery being the most produc-tive brewery globally.
The project, which was signedoff at the beginning of 2015, wasbrought about by an increase indistribution costs as well as thegrowth of the demand for theCastle Lite brand in the region.
According to Brian Versveld,Ibayi Brewery ManufacturingManager, the brewery runs 24/7,
365 days a year to satisfy the de-mand for SAB products. The newproduction line produces a totalof 50 000 bottles of Castle Lite perhour, which will also create em-ployment opportunities thuscontributing positively to the lo-cal economy.
“We now brew more than 2 mil-lion hectolitres (1 hl equals 100 li-tres). Last year we were able tobrew 1.8 million hl.
The new production linemeans that consumers in theEastern Cape will get to taste aCastle Lite which is brewed andbottled in their backyard at aquick turnaround time.
“The new production line alsoresulted in 1 640 truck loads nolonger having to transport CastleLite into the Eastern Cape prov-ince,” said Versveld.
The Ibayi Brewery suppliesthe coastal region which in-cludes East London, George andUmtata all the way up to AliwalNorth.

Goodyear South Africa announced it will in-vest ZAR670million to increase production ofhigh-value-added (HVA) consumer tyres at itsUitenhage manufacturing plant to drive prof-itable growth and meet market demands.
The investment plan would see the intro-duction of state-of-the-art manufacturingtechnology for the plant andwill enableGood-year to meet the strong and growing marketdemand for HVA consumer tyres in South Af-rica and Sub-Sahara Africa.The tyre market in South Africa and Sub-
Sahara Africa is expected to experience dou-ble-digit growth through 2020 led by the con-
sumer segment.“This is an important investment by Good-
year and is consistent with our strategy toserve the needs of our customers and the com-pany’s focus to invest in high return projectsthat drive profitable growth,” said Jean-Jac-ques Wiroth, managing director of GoodyearSouth Africa.The new technology and accompanying
comprehensive employee training will fur-ther improve the plant’s capability and capac-ity to produce Low Rolling Resistance tyresthat promote fuel economy invehicles tomeetthe growing demand from vehicle manufac-turers and the replacementmarket, as well asmeet the increase inmarket requirements forHVA 4X4 SUV tyres.
To allow for this expansion, GoodyearSouth Africa also proposes to relocate theplant’s production of Medium Radial Trucktyres (MRT) to other plants across the com-pany’s Europe, Middle East and Africa re-gion. Under the proposals, Goodyear has af-firmed its intention to confer with the unionrepresentatives and employees who are cur-rently working in the MRT area to minimisethe impact through offering a variety of alter-natives.Subject to consultation, the company ex-
pects to be substantially complete with the in-vestment plans by the end of 2016 or early2017. The companydoes not anticipate disrup-tion to tyre services or supply during this pe-riod.

Lions Club members from around the worldwere requested to join in a worldwide weekof service to children by celebrating “Chil-dren’s Dignity Week”.
“The international event is designed to ben-efit the most vulnerable members of our com-munities and to help us achieve our ‘Centen-
nial Service Challenge Goal’ of serving 100million people by 2017,” said Lions DistrictGovernor Bokkie Oberholzer.The Uitenhage Lions Club approached the
Ubuntu Community Development Solutions(UCDS) NPO which hosts an ongoing project,the Child Clean up Campaign.The project provides underprivileged chil-
dren and children that live on the street witha hot shower/bath, addresses hygiene issues,
dresses them in clean clothes, feeds and enter-tains them for the morning.The UCDS, assisted by the Uitenhage Lions
Club, Uitenhage Round Table, CommunityPolicing ForumandLadies fromKwanobuhleprovided 60 childrenwith the aforementionedservice at the Uitenhage Central SportsFields.“These children are in a desperate need
throughno fault of their ownandeveryoppor-
tunity to make a difference in their livesshould be provided for them as they are ourfuture,” said Lions President Juan Hay.In order for the UCDS to continue with pro-
viding this essential service, volunteers to as-sist and donations of children’s clothing, toi-letries, linen and eating utensils are request-ed.

The South African Breweries (SAB) cele-brates its 120th anniversary this year andwiththat comes 120 years of social gatherings likeHeritage Day with family and friends. Beer,whether added into recipes or paired withdishes, is a good accompaniment to food.
Below are some SAB approved Braai Dayrecipes to try this Heritage Day with the vege-tarian braai pie a must.
Braai Pie(www.eatout.co.za)Meat lovers don’t have to have all the fun on
Braai Day. Give the braai pie a try.
Ingredients•45 ml butter•onion•15 ml all-purpose flour•250 g spinach•150 g feta cheese•115 g (half a tub) cream cheese•3 ml nutmeg•Salt and black pepper•1 x 250g roll of ready-to-roll puff pastryMethod1.Chop and sauté the onion over a medium
heat until soft.2.Sprinkle the flour over the onions and add
the spinach, allowing it to wilt. The flour
should help absorb the extra liquid from thespinach.
3.Crumble in the feta and stir in the creamcheese and nutmeg. Season with salt and pep-per.
4.Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured sur-face.
5.Add the filling on tohalf of thepastry, leav-ing the edges open.
6.Fold the pastry andpress the edges togeth-er to stop any of the ingredients falling out ofthe sides.
7.Place the pie on a braaing grid and bakeon the coals until the pastry is golden on bothsides.

TheUitenhageHigh Past Pupils and TeachersAssociation (UHPPTA)was started in 2010 bya group of former learners wishing to createa platform for the more regular interactionbetween past pupils and teachers of the re-nowned Uitenhage High School.
On the occasion of its 5th anniversary, thecurrent UHPPTA members are still driven byits stated vision of “assisting Uitenhage High
School in any way possible and to provide aforumfor the spiritual, social andacademic ad-vancement of pupils, teachers and all those as-sociated with the school”.
The unbridled passionwithwhich these vol-unteers – both local and in other parts of thecountry – proceed to create new opportunitiesfor current and former learners of the school,is indeed inspirational.Accomplishments and future plansOver the course of its five years of existence
there has been a phenomenal increase in themembership of UHPPTA, due in no small partto regular recruitment drives and well-orga-nised and classy functions.
Alumni from around the globe have alreadysigned up asmembers ofUHPPTAand the aimis to attract even more of the past pupils ofUitenhage High School and friends of theschool to join the organisation.
Theprovisionof additional staff ablution fa-cilities and the installation of playgroundbenches were some of the first projects suc-cessfully completed by UHPPTA.
Furthermore, the organisation has beenfunding the bulk SMS system being used bythe school since 2012. This past year, UHPPTAhas also launched its LeadershipDevelopmentProject, involving groups of senior learners ofthe school.Bursaries to deserving matricsUHPPTA’s real impact, however, has been
the awarding of bursaries to deserving matriclearners to further their studies at tertiary in-stitutions, as well as to the top-performinggrade 8-11 academic and sport learners of theschool.
Indeed, nothing demonstrates the UHPPTAobjective of ‘touching one life, impacting an
entire society’ more aptly than this particularinitiative. To this end, UHPPTA has alreadyforked out an amount in excess of R150 000since its establishment. The budgeted expendi-ture for next year amounts to R68 000. Amajorportion of the revenue to fund this initiative,as well as the other projects referred to above,has come from the unselfish contributions ofalumni and generous supporters. Over time,the organisation has also forged close workingrelationships with institutions includingNMMU and Stenden University, to the benefitof the learners of the school.
The flagship project of the association is theenvisaged erection of a much-needed multi-functional hall at the school. The purpose ofthis hall would be the conducting of assem-blies, conducting of matric exam sessions,hosting of parent meetings and school func-tions, as well as staging indoor sports events.
Thehallwould also bemade available for useby the community. The estimated current costof the project amounts to R5 million.
It is hoped that the recent registration of theorganisation as a non-profit organisation(NPO) will assist in accelerating the securingof funds for this project. Marilyn Klassen was recently in-ducted as the incoming Presidentof the Rotary Club of Uitenhage
South and is the club’s first female presidentin the history of the club.
Marilyn joined the club just over 8 yearsago and has served the club with dedicationand devotion. She matriculated at Uiten-
hage High School and did her tertiary stud-ies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Univer-sity. She is currently Matron at the Provin-cial Hospital in Uitenhage.
Marilyn has set as her target for the year,among various goals, the raising of funds tosponsor school learners to attend a ScienceFair, the support of orphanages and homesfor the aged, support for the destitute withinthe community with warm blankets, cloth-ing and food, support of the SPCA, and ona global front, support for the eradication ofpolio.
The Uitenhage South Club was estab-lished in 1973 and has been active for 42years in the Uitenhage and Despatch dis-trict.
Currently, the club has 3 female membersout of a total of 26 members. The club has
a very active “Ann’s club”, made up mainlyof the female spouses of the club members.The club also has 7 Interact Boards, based inschools throughout Uitenhage. These Inter-act Boards have, in their own right, put to-gether some amazing contributions to thecommunity of Uitenhage.

The Uitenhage and District SPCA hasemerged victorious with recent rulings in fa-vour of the organisation, in two cruelty cases.
“Despite not being able to recover veteri-nary costs, the SPCA is more than satisfiedwith the outcome that finally perpetrators ofcruelty to animals have been successfullyprosecuted and sentenced,” said DeirdreSwift from the SPCA Uitenhage managingboard.This is a huge breakthrough with respect
to animal cruelty and is due largely to the ef-forts and perseverance of their Inspector, De-on Combrink.The first case, lodged in January 2014
against an owner for cutting off his dog’s legafter it had been hit by a car, has taken 18months to resolve.“The ownerwas found guilty on four counts
of animal cruelty and was sentenced to 12months imprisonment, suspended for fiveyears. He is also required to perform commu-nity service for 16 hours permonth for the fullduration of the sentence.“The dog involved was named ‘Precious’ at

The Extreme Fun & Sports Day, which is arun-up to the next Uitenhage Airshow earlynext year, will be held at the local airfield onSaturday, October 3rd.
Extreme sky sports in which to participateor simply enjoy as a spectator include skydiv-ing, paragliding, powerparagliding, glidingand flying. Back on terra firma there will beadrenaline pumping extreme 4x4 action anda VW Beetle Parade. Other activities include
stalls, live music and fun for the kids.“It is not possible at all to combine extreme
or adventurous sports with an airshow. It isagainst regulations and a high risk of havingaircraft and sport activities perceived as hav-ing a high level of inherent danger,” saidLourens Kruger, organiser of the ExtremeFun & Sports Day as well as the popularWings & Wheels Festival & Doug DavidsonMemorial Airshow.
“We are excited about skydive experts EPSkydivers from Grahamstown, Joos Vos andJames Williamson, who will join in the ex-
treme fun by offering the public the opportu-nity to enjoy tandem skydiving.”
Extreme sports are activities which morethan often involve high speed, height, a highlevel of physical exertion as well as special-ized gear. And spectators and participantscan be assured that the above will all bepresent at the Uitenhage Airfield on October3rd as from 08:00 when the gates open.
Karel Spannenberg from the EC 4x4 Chal-lenge Club will make sure the 4x4 track willbe an extreme experience. Once again mem-bers of the public, owning 4x4 vehicles, are in-vited to participate. Entries will be acceptedon the day of the event.
“Both the airshow and this extreme sportsday are organised with the aim to raise fundsin developing and upgrading the local air-field.
“We have already cleared and secured the
area, improved the runway and are in theprocess of erecting security lights. There defi-nitely is an increase in air-traffic and we areproud also to have the light sport aircraft andhelicopter training at our airfield,” said Kru-ger.
He would not like to let the cat out of thebag, but confirmed that theyare lookingat thepossibilities of hosting a national aerobaticchampionship at the Uitenhage Airfield.
The entrance fee to the Extreme Fun &Sports Day is R30 and R10 for primary schoolchildren. The day is organised by the Uiten-hageAirfieldAssociation in conjunctionwithsponsors Algoa Steel, Klinicare Pharmaciesand Rangers.
