UCONN INKS ONE OF COUNTRY’S TOP RECRUITING CLASSES UConn men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie has announced that the program has received signed National Letters of Intent from four student-athletes who will enroll as fulltime students in the fall of 2016. Guard Alterique Gilbert (Lithonia, Ga.), power forwards Mamadou Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) and Juwan Durham (Tampa, Fla.) and small forward Vance Jackson (Altadena, Calif.) make up what is considered by most recruiting services as one of the top recruiting classes in the country. It is the first time UConn has had a recruiting class including four players ranked in the Top 100 since the incoming freshman class of 2006-07. Gilbert, a 5-11 point guard out of Miller Grover High School, is rated among the top 30 players nationally by most recruiting services. An exceptional athlete known for his tremendous speed, quickness, and strength, he averaged 18.5 points, 6.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.3 steals as a junior. Jackson, a 6-8 forward with a deadly longrange shot, was named the 2015 Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year after averaging 19.4 points and 7.1 rebounds for St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). As a sophomore, he was teammates with current UConn sophomore Daniel Hamilton on a Bosco team that won the state champi-onship. Jackson, rated a top 50 player, will play his senior season at Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif). Diarra, a 6-8 power forward who attends Putnam Science Academy (Putnam, Conn.) is explosive around the rim and is an outstanding rebounder at both ends of the court. He averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds last year to help Putnam Science to a 27-8 record. Durham, a 6-9 power forward out of Tampa Preparatory School, was rated among the top 30 players in the country, despite having missed the last few weeks of his junior sea-son with a knee injury. Until he was injured in February last year, he was averaging 22.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game.

and plenty of impressive individual statistics. Junior Amida Brimah tied an AAC conference record with 9 blocks to go with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Grad student Shonn Miller had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while grad student Sterling Gibbs added a game-high 20 points and sophomore Daniel Hamilton grabbed 9 rebounds to go with 9 assists.

BLOCK PARTY: Junior center Amida Brimah blocked 9 shots against Maine, a career-high, and one shy of the UConn single-game record, shared by Hasheem Thabeet (three separate times), Emeka Okafor, and Donyell Marshall. Brimah led the country last season with 121 blocked shots. Brimah’s 222 career blocks places him in a tie with Josh Boone for fourth place on UConn’s all-time list behind Okafor (441), Thabeet (417) and Marshall (245). As a team, UConn had 15 blocked shots against Maine, 4 shy of the team record.

DUNK DELUGE: Unofficially, UConn had 11 dunks against Maine, 6 of the alley-oop variety. Junior Amida Briamh and grad student Shonn Miller each had five dunks and junior Rodney Purvis added one.

AAC HONOR: UConn junior Amida Brimah has been named to the first American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll of the 2015-16 season after his 18-point, 7-rebound, 9-block performance in the Huskies’ 100-56 win over Maine.

MILESTONES: UConn junior Amida Brimah currently has a .668 career field goal percentage, the highest in UConn history. Brimah set the single-season school record of

.674 last season. Graduate student Sterling Gibbs needs just 8 points for 1,000 in his college career.

PRESEASON WINS: UConn finished its two-game exhibition season with a dominating 83-43 win over Division II New Haven on Nov. 7 at the XL Center in Hartford. The Huskies used a balanced scoring attack with just two players in double figures, but featured seven players with at least 8 points. Junior Rodney Purvis and freshman Steve Enoch each posted 11 points to lead the way, while junior Amida Brimah led the rebounding with 7 and added 3 blocked shots. On Nov. 1, UConn opened the preseason with an 88-72 victory over Division II University of Tampa in Gampel Pavilion. Forward Shonn Miller led five double-figure scorers for the Huskies with 18 points and he also contributed 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Freshman Jalen Adams and Purvis each had 14 points.

RULE CHANGES: The NCAA Rules Committee has made more than 25 changes in the rules this season, most of which are intended to increase the pace of play, reduce the number of stoppages and provide better balance between offense and defense. Some of the key changes are:Shot clock reduced from 35 to 30 seconds.Restricted area arc expanded from three feet to four feet.Removal of the closely-guarded 5-second count on a dribble.Reduction of 30-second timeouts from four to three, with only two allowed to carry over to the second half.A 30-second timeout called within 30 seconds of a media timeout will become the

media timeout.Coaches can only call timeout during a dead ball situation. The 10-second backcourt count does not reset when the defender causes the ball to go out of bounds, or when the offense retains possession on a held ball, or when a technical foul is called on the offensive team.

TOP 25: UConn is ranked among the Top 25 in both the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches poll. UConn is No. 19 in the AP Top 25 poll and is No. 24 in the USA Today poll. The longest consecutive streak for UConn to be ranked in the Top 25 is 77 straight weeks, a span from November, 1997 through January, 2001. Six of UConn’s 2015-16 opponents also appear in the Top 25 or “Others Receiveing Votes.” That figure would rise to seven if the Huskies meet Gonzaga or Texas A&M at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.Consecutive Weeks in the AP PollStreak ------------------------------Dates1. 77 weeks--------Nov., 1997-Jan., 20012. 67 weeks ----March, 2003-Jan., 20073. 51 weeks ----Dec., 1993-March, 19964. 36 weeks ------Feb., 2008-Jan., 20105. 28 weeks----- -Nov., 2010-Jan., 2012 THE AAC PRESEASON PICKS: In a vote of the American Athletic Conference head coaches, UConn received two first-place votes and was picked to finish No. 2 in the conference behind SMU. 2015-16 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

UCONN vs. NEW HAMPSHIRE 2012-13November 29, 2012, XL Center, Hartford, Conn.

The basketball history between UConn and New Hampshire dates back to the 1906-07 season and includes 116 meetings, with UConn holding a 91-25 edge. UConn has won the last eight meetings and 18 of the last 20. UConn is 3-0 against New Hampshire at Gampel Pavilion. The Wildcats had a 13-win improvement last season, equaling the school record for wins with 19 and earning an invite to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Four of five starters and six of the top seven scorers from that team remain on New Hampshire’s roster, raising expectations for this season. Leading the returnees is America East Rookie of the Year 6-7 Tanner Leissner, last year’s top scorer and rebounder. Leissner has picked up where he left off, scoring a game-high 21 points and grab-bing 10 rebounds in UNH’s season-opening win over Lyndon State College. Sophomore 6-9 Iba Ca-mara also stepped up in the Wildcats’ opener with 15 points and 20 rebounds, while junior Jaleen Smith and freshman Pat McNamara each chipped in with 11 points. Due to injuries and suspensions, only eight play-ers appeared in New Hampshire’s opener.

Kevin OLLIEHead Coach

4th year as HC; 6th year at UConnIn just three seasons as UConn’s

head coach, following two years as an assistsnt under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun, UConn head coach Kevin Ollie has already experienced a long career’s worth of ups and downs --- including the ultimate high of the college basketball coaching profes-sion, the 2014 NCAA National Cham-pionship.

His teams have never won less than 20 games, while posting two perfect APR scores of 1,000. His career re-cord of 72-33 (.686) already has him tied for sixth place on UConn’s all-time coaching wins list.

The 2014-15 season was full of ups and downs as well, culmination in a 20-15 record and a bid to the national Invi-tation Tourna-ment. Along the way, the Hus-kies had wins over top AAC teams SMU, Tul-sa and Cincin-nati and a thrill ride through the AAC postseason tournament that ended in the cham-pionship game, where they bowed to SMU.

At 42, Ollie is considered one of the bright, rising stars in the college basketball coaching world.

It took Ollie just 70 games to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA champion-ship.

In just his second season as UCo-

nn’s head basketball coach and only his fourth year in coaching since retir-ing from the NBA, Ollie firmly estab-lished himself in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA title, defeat-ing Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On his way to guiding UConn to their its fourth NCAA crown in the

history of the program, Ol-lie marched the Huskies past storied pro-grams Saint Jo-seph’s, Villano-va, Iowa State, Michigan State, and Florida in the tournament before the finale against Ken-tucky.

It would have been a dream season for any col-lege coach, but for a coach of just 70 games, whose team was not even able to com-pete in the 2013 NCAA Tourna-ment because of academic shortcomings of years long past,

it was truly remarkable. The Huskies, who had a 12-6 mark in the new American Athletic Conference, won eight of their last nine games, 11 of their last 13, and had a 10-4 record against ranked opponents, including two wins against Florida, the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Ollie accepted a huge responsibil-ity on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the

history of UConn men’s basketball. Despite a roster depleted by transfers

and early NBA entrants, Ollie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no oth-er UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe Na-tional Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach.

Less than a dozen games into his first season as head coach, Ollie was award-ed a five-year contract. Following his second season in 2013-14, he spurned interest from NBA teams to sign anoth-er new contract with UConn that runs through May, 2019.

Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful sea-sons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff follow-

ing a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possessed a wealth of basket-ball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Calhoun, Chuck Daly, Don Nelson, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

Coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Ollie played on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, as a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Hus-kies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 as-sists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks fourth on UCo-nn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications.

During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s

record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

After his UConn career, Ollie fought his way through years in the Continen-tal Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.

Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earn-ing a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perse-verance finally paid off with a multi-year NBA contract from the Cleveland Cava-liers. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities.

Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national champion-ship. He has had the same kind of suc-cess mentoring guards Jeremy Lamb, Shabazz Napier, and, this past season, Ryan Boatright.

Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury and has two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
