LOOKING FOR TITLE NO. 4: UConn, which owns the highest winning percentage (7-1, .875) in the Final Four of any team that has played at least three games, is going after its fourth national title tonight, putting its perfect 3-0 mark in national title games on the line. The Huskies defeated Duke, 77-74, in St. Petersburg, Fla., to win the 1999 crown, topped Georgia Tech, 82-73, in San Antonio, Texas, to earn the 2004 title, and upended Butler, 53-41, in Houston, Texas, to win the 2011 championship. UConn’s only Final Four loss came at the hand of Michigan State, 82-73, in Detroit, in the national semifinals. The Huskies upped their Final Four record to 7-1 with Saturday’s 63-53 triumph over Florida in the 2014 semifinals. Kentucky will be gunning for its ninth national championship and stands 8-3 (.727) in national title games.

UCONN OVERALL IN NCAA TOURNAMENT: UConn has a record of 57-29 (.663) in 32 NCAA Tournament appearances (including the three 1996 NCAA Tournament games declared void by the NCAA). The Huskies have won three NCAA National Championships, in 1999, 2004, and 2011, and the Huskies also appeared in the 2009 NCAA Final Four. UConn has reached the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times (5-6) and the Sweet Sixteen 17 times (11-6) in school history. UConn was 48-15 in the NCAA Tournament in 18 appearances under Jim Calhoun. The Huskies were 4-14 in 13 appearances in the tourney prior to Calhoun’s arrival in Storrs in 1986-87. UConn is a perfect 5-0 in NCAA tourney play under second-year coach Kevin Ollie.

IMPRESSIVE LAST 12: UConn has registered a 37-8 record (.822) in its last 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to its 6-0 run to the National Championship in 1999. Included in that 12-appearance span are three NCAA National

UConn shot a hot 55.8 percent for the game, 63.6 percent in the second half, and outrebounded Florida, 28-27.

MEETING KENTUCKY: UConn owns a 3-1 record all-time against Kentucky, all on neutral courts, including 2-0 in NCAA Tournament play. The Huskies topped the Wildcats, 87-83, in the second round of the 2006 NCAA tourney in Philadelphia, and also defeated Kentucky, 56-55, in the 2011 NCAA national semifinals in Houston in 2011. In-between, the Huskies lost to the Wild-cats, 64-61, on Dec. 9, 2009, in the Big East/SEC Invitational in Madison Square Garden, and UConn beat Kentucky, 84-67, on Nov. 24, 2010, in the Maui Invita-tional chamnpionship game in Hawaii. This year, Kentucky had an up and down season, but hit its stride late, winning seven olf its last eight. Julius Randle, one of the most heralded of the country’s tal-ented freshman class is Kentucky’s top scorer (15.1) and rebounder (10.5), but the Wildcats have plenty more firepower with James Young (14.2), Aaron Harrison (13.9) and brother Andrew Harrison (10.9) also in double figures. Kentucky outscores opponents by 8.5 ppg, but outrebounds opponents by 9.7 per game. The Wildcats shoot .455 overall, even better (.480) during the NCAA Tourna-ment.

30 FOR THE NINTH TIME: The Huskies (31-8) have recorded 30 victories in a season for the ninth time in their history, all since 1989-90. All the previous 30-win seasons came under Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun: in 1989-90 (31-6), 1995-96 (30-2), 1997-98 (32-5), 1998-99 (34-2), 2003-04 (33-6), 2005-06 (30-4), 2008-09 (31-5) and 2010-11 (32-9).

Championships (1999, 2004, 2011), five trips to the NCAA Final Four (1999, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014), and seven trips to the Elite Eight or beyond (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014).

UCONN IN TEXAS: The Huskies are 10-5 when playing in the state of Texas, including 5-1 in NCAA Tournament games. UConn went 2-0 in the 2004 NCCA tourney in San Antonio, 2-0 in the 2011 NCAA tourney in 2011, 1-0 in this year’s tourney in Dallas, but went 0-1 in the 2003 tourney in San Antonio. Other records in Texas include: 1-1 at Houston, 0-2 at SMU, 1-0 at TCU, 1-0 at Rice, and 2-1 at Texas.

UCONN AS A NO. 7 SEED: UConn is a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the seeding process began in 1979 and is the first No. 7 seed to ever reach the national championship game. In UConn’s 19 NCAA appearances since 1979, the Huskies have been a No. 1 seed five times, a No. 2 seed six times, a No. 3 seed once, a No. 4 seed once, a No. 5 seed three times, a No. 9 seed twice, and a No. 11 seed once. The Huskies are only the second No. 7 seed to reach the Final Four (Virginia in 1984). With Kentucky as a No. 8 seed, UConn and Kentucky are the highest combined seeds to reach the championship game since the tourney expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

FLORIDA FALLS: UConn stopped No. 1 Florida’s 30-game win-ning streak with a smothering defense that held the Gators to just 38.8 percent shooting in a 63-53 victory in the national semifinals before a record crowd of 79,444 at AT&T Stadium on Saturday. It was the second victory over Florida this season for UConn, which also defeated the Gators, 65-64, on Dec. 2 at Gampel Pavilion. Florida jumped in front of UConn, 16-4, only to watch the Huskies explode on an 11-0 run to get back in the game. UConn outscored Florida, 21-6, in the last 9:48 of the first half to take a 25-22 half-time lead, then opened the lead as wide as 10 points midway through the second half. In the final 5:00, Florida could never get closer than six and UConn marched to its fifth straight NCAA win. Junior DeAndre Daniels produced a double-double for UConn with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Ryan Boatright had 13 points and 6 rebounds, senior Shabazz Napier had 12 points and 6 assists, and senior Niels Giffey tossed in 11 points.

TOP 25: UConn is in the top 25 rankings in both the AP and USA Today Top 25 for the final poll week of March 17. The Huskies are No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 18 in the USA Today poll. Starting with the preseason poll, the Huskies spent nine consecutive weeks ranked in the polls and have been in the AP Top 25 in 15 of the season’s 20 weeks. Six of UConn’s 2013-14 opponents also appeared in the AP Top 25 or ‘Others receiving votes.’ The longest consecutive streak for UConn to be ranked in the Top 25 is 77 weeks, a span from Nov. 1997-Jan. 2001. VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Using the AP Top 25 as the standard, Florida was the ninth nationally-ranked team that UConn faced in its last 11 games. The Huskies are 7-2 in those games. Overall this season, the Huskies are 10-4 vs. ranked opponents. Since 1989-90, UConn is 127-96 (.570) against ranked opponents and since the first NCAA championship season of 1998-99, the Huskies are 94-61 (.606) against ranked opponents. In the last 10 years, plus this year, UConn is 65-44 (.596) against ranked opponents.

TOUGH ON CHAMPS: During the 2013-14 season, UConn has defeated either the regular-season of conference champions from the American Athletic Conference (Cincinnati), Big Ten (Michigan State), Big 12 (Iowa State), SEC (Florida, twice), Big

East (Villanova), Atlantic-10 (Saint Joseph’s), Ivy league (Harvard), and Patriot League (Boston University).

GRAND MASTERS: With his first point against Memphis on Feb. 15, in the 79th game of his college career, junior Ryan Boatright became the 48th member of UConn’s 1,000-point club. Boatright joins senior Shabazz Napier as 1,000-point scorers on the same team. The last time the Huskies had more than one 1,000-point scorer on the same team was in 2008-09, when that UConn team had four -- Jeff Adrien, A.J. Price, Jerome Dyson, and Hasheem Thabeet.

20 OFF THE BENCH: With 20 points against UCF on January 11, freshman Amida Brimah became the first UConn player under Coach Kevin Ollie to come off the bench and score 20 points. The last UConn player to accomplish that feat was Ryan Boatright, who came off the bench to score 23 against Arkansas on December 3, 2011, under former Coach Jim Calhoun. Boatright was the 14th player to come off the bench in Calhoun’s 26 seasons at UConn to reach the 20-point mark in a game. The other players in this group were Rashad Anderson (11 times), Brian Fair (9 times) , Ben Gordon (5 times), Ray Allen (4 times), Johnnie Selvie (4 times), Phil Gamble (3 times), Doug Wiggins (3 times), Kemba Walker (2 times), Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (2 times), John Gwynn (2 times), Tony Robertson (1 time), Charlie Villanueva (1 time) and Rashamel Jones (1 time).

RECORD WATCH: Through 39 games, the Huskies are close to a few UConn season records. The record for highest 3-point shooting percentage is 40.8 percent in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 38.9 percent. The UConn record for highest foul shooting percentage is 78.2 percent in 1980-81, which was also No. 1 in the country. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 77.4 percent from the foul line. The highest per game average of three-point attempts stands at 17.3 in 2010-11. UConn’s average so far this season is 18.5. The highest per game average of three-pointers made is 7.4 in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are averaging 7.21 three-pointers per game.

CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn sophomore Phillip Nolan owns the longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 48 consecutive games. Senior Shabazz Napier has the current record for consecutive starts with 40.

PERCENTAGE LEADER: With 51 wins in his first 69 games as head coach, UConn

coach Kevin Ollie’s .739 winning percent-age is the highest of any UConn coach who coached more than 20 games. Ollie is the only UConn coach to win 20 games in his first season and 50 games in his first two years.

MOST GAMES: Senior Shabazz Napier has already set the UConn record for most games played with 142. In addition, Napi-er’s 698 points so far this season is the 8th highest-scoring season in UConn history. Only seven UConn players have scored 700 points in a single season.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES: DeAndre Daniels’ double-double vs. Florida (20 points, 10 rebounds) was his fifth double-double of the season and the seventh of his career. Shabazz Napier is the UConn leader with eight double-doubles in his career, includ-ing two triple-doubles.

STARTING NOTESUConn has started nine different players and used 10 different starting lineups this season, and has only one player, Shabazz Napier, who has started every game. Napier and Niels Giffey are the only UConn players this season to score in each of the Huskies’ 39 games. Ryan Boatright has scored in each of the 38 games he played, while DeAndre Daniels has only been held scoreless once in the 37 games he has played. The breakdown is as follows:

Kevin OLLIEHead Coach

2nd Year as HC; 4th year at UConnIn just his second season as the

head basketball coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut and only his fourth year in the profession since retiring from the NBA, Kevin Ollie has already established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game.

Ollie accepted a huge responsi-bility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.

By the end of the 2012-13 sea-son, however, it was evident that Ol-lie was more than ready to meet the challenge.

With only two seasons of coach-ing experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportu-nity to lead the storied UConn pro-gram.

Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, and a team that was ineligible for any postseason play due to academ-ic shortcomings in years long past, Ollie guided the Huskies to a 20-vic-tory season, a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

The Huskies finished 20-10, ex-tending UConn’s streak of 20-win seasons to three straight, five in the last six years, and 14 in the last 16 years, as well as extending its streak of winning seasons to 26 in a row. UConn posted a 10-8 mark in the difficult Big East Conference. At sea-son’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recog-nized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority

coach, who produced excellent re-sults despite difficult or adverse con-ditions.

Ollie raised eyebrows with the season’s very first game, upsetting 14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the

Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also in-cluded victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syracuse, and five wins in overtime, a school record.

On Dec. 29, 2012, less than a dozen games into

his first season as head coach, Ol-lie was awarded a new contract that will run through at least the 2017-18 season.

Ollie’s UConn history --- which be-gan in the fall of 1991 when he re-ported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two sea-sons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Cal-houn, Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kev-in’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard. “He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.”

Ollie made a decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los An-geles. Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s,

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basket-ball.”

~ Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun

Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a Communications degree.

But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn ca-reer, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appear-ances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season champion-ships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, display-ing unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.

Once there, Ollie would simply not

give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, deal-ing with trades and roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a pro-fessional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 differ-ent NBA coaches.

Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual sea-sons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third nation-al championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appear-ance and another UConn guard, Jer-emy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery

selection. Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and

raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).

“Kevin Ollie, he was a game-changer for us. He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, pro-fessionalism, every single day. And we all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. And then every-body who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.”
