THE GAME

UCONN VS. USF HISTORYSaturday’s game is the 11th meeting between UConn and South Florida and the series is tied 5-5 – with the home team winning every game except a UConn win at USF in 2010. UConn and USF have met each year since 2005 as confer-ence foes and the Huskies lead that series 5-3. Since becoming conference mates, the home team has won each game in the UConn-USF series except for a 2010 UConn win at USF – a game which clinched the Huskies’ first-ever trip to a Bowl Championship Series Bowl.Last season, USF defeated UConn by a 13-6 score at Raymond James Sta-dium on November 2, 2012. USF QB B.J. Daniels had a five-yard rush for a TD late in the first quarter to complete an eight-play, 80-yard drive for the only TD of the game as both teams added a pair of field goals. Daniels, who left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury, was 19 for 29 in the air with one INT for 199 yards and rushed for 23 yards. UConn QB Chandler Whitmer was 24 of 38 for 284 yards with 2 INT. Lyle McCombs rushed for 47 yards. UConn had 327 yards of total offense in the game while USF had 283.In the last game in the series at Rentschler Field, UConn topped USF by a 16-10 score at Rentschler Field on October 15. McCombs rushed for 130 yards in that game and Dave Teggart hit on three field goals. The Huskies did not have an offensive TD in the game. Cornerback Byron Jones returned a fumble 10-yards for a third quarter touchdown for UConn. Teggart was the dramatic hero in both the 2009 and ’10 games with the Bulls for the Huskies. On Dec. 4, 2010 at Raymond James Stadium, Teggart kicked a then career-long 52-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to play to lift UConn to a 19-16 win and clinch the Huskies first-ever appearance in a BCS game. UConn led at the half 10-3 in 2010, scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 55-yard interception return by Lawrence Wilson. The Huskies led 16-6 with 13:39 left to go on a 50-yard Teggart FG, but the Bulls responded with 10 points in a little over seven minutes to tie the game at 16-16. Jordan Todman had 93 yards of rushing for UConn and Zach Frazer was 13 of 29 for 112 yards in the game. Teggart had a total of four field goals. In 2009, Teggart kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired to give the Huskies a 29-27 win at Rentschler Field on a snowy Dec. 5. On Oct. 27, 2007 at Rent-schler Field, UConn topped the Bulls by a 22-15 score. USF was ranked 11th in the country at the time of the game and it marked UConn’s first win over an As-sociated Press ranked team at the time of the game. The win propelled UConn

to a #16 national ranking the following week -- the first in UConn history. The teams met for the first time on Oct. 28, 2000 at Memorial Stadium in Storrs with the Bulls taking a 21-13 victory. UConn returned the trip on Oct. 13, 2001 and faced the Bulls at Raymond James Stadium during USF’s inaugural I-A season. The Huskies, still transitioning to I-A, fell 40-21.

UCONN-USF CONNECTIONSThe UConn roster has nine players from Florida on it – redshirt sophomore Tyree Clark (Tampa), redshirt freshman John Green (Miami), freshman Javon Hadley (Miami), redshirt freshman Ellis Marder (Windermere), redshirt junior Bryan Paull (Parkland), sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach), fresh-man Kyle Schafenacker (Cooper City), redshirt sophomore Brandon Steg (Coral Springs) and redshirt freshman Jhavon Wiliams (Wellington). The USF roster, dominated by Florida players, has one Connecticut connection—sopho-more WR and Central Connecticut transfer Jimel Atkins, who is a Jacksonville native. The two head coaches, UConn’s T.J. Weist and USF’s Willie Taggart, were members of the same coaching staff at Western Kentucky from 2001-06. At various times while on staff together, Taggart was the quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach while Weist handled the wide receivers and was the offensive coordinator for the Hilltoppers.

RENTSCHLER GAMEDAY

At UConn home games, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game. It takes place between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates...The offerings change each game, but activities typi-cally include inflatable games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs....The “Husky Walk” is a chance for fans to welcome the UConn team as they get off the team buses and head to the stadium. That takes place approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff between Gates A and B...Once again this season at the end of home games, the UConn team will sing the “UConn Husky” fight song in front of the student section at Rentschler Field.

The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMSThe Sept. 21 game vs. Michigan was the 21st time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn has a 2-19 record in those games with the two wins coming vs. No. 19 Louisville on November 24, 2012 by a 23-20 score in triple overtime and on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICSThe UConn football program continues to be a leader in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among Big East league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the Big East and within four points of the second place team in 2011, was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark released in 2012 was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universi-ties that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recog-nized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943). UConn’s 2013 APR score of 958 was 11 points higher than the national average of public institutions.

HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002Connecticut boasts a 45-26 record against non-conference

opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 20 of their last 32 regular season non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11, North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12 and Towson, Maryland, Michigan and Buffalo in ’13.UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013).

HUSKIES ON THE REBOUNDUConn is 34-24 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002. The Huskies lost their 2012 season finale vs. Cincinnati and the record includes games over two seasons with the losses to Towson, Maryland, Michigan and now Buffalo.

OFFENSE NOTES

BOYLE GETS THE STARTING NODUConn freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) is scheduled to make his first career start and get his first career playing time on Saturday against USF. Boyle was named Con-necticut High School Coaches’ Association Player of the Year as a senior in 2012 at Xavier High School in Middletown.Boyle becomes the first true freshman to start a game for UConn at quarterback since Shelton native Dan Orlovsky did on October 6, 2001 – a 19-0 win over Eastern Michigan. Orlovsky started 43 consecutive games over three-plus sea-sons, concluding his career with a win in the Huskies’ first-ever bowl appearance – the 2004 Motor City Bowl.Boyle was named first team All-State by the New Haven Reg-ister and All-Hartford Courant and was named All-Southern Connecticut Conference as a senior. He threw for nearly 2,500 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior as team won state Class LL championship for the third-straight season – a 48-14 win over Norwich Free Academy at Rentschler Field. Boyle was named one of three finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Connecticut Player of the Year Award along with fellow UConn freshman FB Matt Walsh (Madison, Conn.).As a junior, Boyle shared starting duties and threw for 850 yards and 15 TDs in six games. On June 29 at Rentschler Field, Boyle played in the Hall of Fame Classic Military Bowl – a Connecticut all-star game – and had two TD passes leading his team to a 15-14 win. He was 12 of 24 in the air for 134 yards.

WHITMER AT BACKUPUConn junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) started the last 15 games for the Huskies at quarterback dating back to the start of the 2012 season. His 2,503 yards of total of-fense last year was eighth in school single-season history while his 208 completions was seventh. Whitmer’s 2,664 passing yards was fifth. Here is the statement that head coach T.J. Weist released to explain the quarterback change and how Whitmer has handled himself since coming to UConn.“Chandler Whitmer has exhibited outstanding character and integrity since the day I stepped on to this campus and even be-

fore I got here. He has worked extremely hard, put in a lot of hours at his craft, and done everything in his power to help this team be successful. We all know the QB takes an unfair amount of criticism when a team loses. To Chandler’s credit he has handled the criticism with class and dignity. He has done every-thing in his power to improve and do the best job possible. We haven’t always put him in the best position to be successful, having had multiple injuries at the wide receiver and the offensive line positions and to his credit he has not complained. He’s gone out and battled every game for this team. “That being said, we feel like at this time we need to give Tim a chance to play and see if he can provide a spark for our team. He has been working hard and deserves an opportunity to show what he can do. Chandler is still a big factor and leader on this team and we know that he will continue to prepare as if he’s the starter and when his number is called he will be ready to help this team in whatever capacity is needed. He’s been a great mentor to Tim up to this point and given his integrity and character we know he will continue to do whatever it takes to help Tim and this team be successful.”Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semester and participated in spring practice. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-Kansas Junior College Confer-ence first team honors and earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011.

McCOMBS A DOAK WALKER CANDIDATEUConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named to the preseason candidate list for the 2013 Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top college running back each year by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. He led UConn in rushing in the opening game vs. Towson with 76 yards on 17 carries. McCombs has led UConn in rushing the past two seasons with 1,151 yards in 2011 and was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Asso-ciation of America and a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick. He was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country in ‘11. Last year, he led the Huskies with 860 yards on 243 carries. He is currently the seventh-leading rusher in school history with 2,211 yards while Vinny Clements is sixth with 2,327 from 1968-70.McCombs is third in career carries at UConn with 575 and has two of the top six single-season marks in rushing carries. McCombs has nine 100-yard rush-ing games over the past two-plus seasons.

DAVIS TOPS 100, SHAK SETS RECEIVING YARDAGE MILESTONESUConn redshirt junior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is the leading receiv-er on the team with 15 receptions for 308 – having five receptions in each of the first two games, four receptions for 52 yards vs. Michigan and five for 102 yards against Buffalo. He now has two 100-yard receiving games this season (also had 100 vs. Towson). He now has three 100-yard receiving games as he had 123 vs. Western Michigan in 2012. UConn redshirt junior Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is second with 15 receptions for 225 yards and three TDs this season despite missing the past two games with a hamstring injury. Philips had ten receptions for 178 yards and one TD vs. Maryland on Sept. 14, which was a career-high in each category. The 178 yards of receiving was the most for a Husky in UConn’s FBS era (since 2002). It marked the first time a Husky receiver had more than 150 yards in one game since Marcus Easley had 157 against West Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009. It was the most receiving yards in a single-game for a Husky since Dak Newton had 222 vs. Villanova on Oct. 5, 1996.

It was Towson’s first win against an opponent from the bowl subdivision. Towson put up 393 yards of total offense while holding UConn to just 287. Quarterback Peter Athens threw for 192 yards and another score and running back Sterlin Phifer caught a 23-yard touchdown and ran for another. West car-ried the ball a career-high 36 times, and broke the 100-yard mark for the 12th time in his career. The junior’s two fourth-quarter scores put the game away. UConn junior wide receiver Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) had two touchdown catches for Connecticut and redshirt junior wide receiver Ger-emy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) caught five balls for 100 yards in the losing effort. The Tigers were up 13-10 at halftime and trailed just once, at 7-0. The Huskies were held scoreless in the second half of this one until junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnana, Ga.) hit Phillips with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 3:29 left in the game that cut the deficit to 26-18. But on UConn’s next opportunity, freshman Brian Lemelle (Harris-burg, Pa.) fumbled a punt. West, who now has 46 career touchdowns, then put the finishing touches on the upset, scoring from 5 yards out with 16 seconds left in the game. Connecticut took an early lead after a 92-yard drive that was set up with a diving interception by redshirt freshman safety Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.). The redshirt freshman was pressed into a starting role when Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) went down in camp with a shoul-der injury. Nine plays after the pick, Whitmer found Phillips breaking toward the left corner for a 31-yard catch-and-run. Towson answered in just four plays. Phifer swung out of the backfield on a delay pattern and Athens found him wide open for a 23-yard touch-down. Phifer scored again in the second quarter on a five-yard run. That came two plays after Jon Desir tipped and intercepted a Whitmer pass at the UConn 29-yard line, a ball that ended up between Desir’s legs. Towson controlled the second half. Athens took the Tigers on a 13-play 95-yard drive in the third quarter, finishing it himself. His dive from a yard gave the Tigers a 19-10 lead. Leon Kinnard, a transfer from UConn, made the big play of the drive, catching a 39-yard pass that set Towson up at the UConn 25-yard line. Connecticut drove into Towson territory, but fumbled on fourth-and-1 at the 33-yard line, giving Towson the ball back. The Tigers then drove 62 yards in 10 plays, with West going in from 6 yards out. The junior, who carried the ball a career-high 36 times, ran 1,051 yards as a sophomore, after rushing for almost 1,300 yards and scoring 29 touchdowns as a freshman. UConn’s Whitmer completed 15 of 27 passes for 199 yards and the two touchdowns. Husky junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 76 yards rushing on 17 carries. UConn fell to 9-3 in season openers since making the jump to the FBS in 2002, including 9-2 at Rentschler Field.

UConn returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Michigan at 8:00 p.m. on ABC -- a gametime which was announced late Saturday.Diggs, who caught five balls, had 98 yards receiving at the half. His 12-yard catch and run in the third quarter capped a four-play 80-yard drive in the third quarter that put the Terps up 20-10.The Huskies cut the lead to 20-13 on a 34-yard field goal that came after Brandon Ross fumbled the ball at his own 25-yard line. Maryland got some breathing room when Dexter McDougle stepped in front of UConn redshirt junior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) on the right sideline, and took an interception back 49-yards across the field for a touchdown.UConn redshirt junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was 29-of-46 for a career-high 349 yards and a touchdown. Phillips scored a late 75-yard touchdown catch and run, but had to be helped off the field after getting injured on the play. The Terps turned the ball over three times in the first quarter in UConn territory, twice failing to convert on fourth-and-1. Brandon Ross was stuffed for a three yard loss to end the Terps first possession, and UConn re-sponded by going on a six-play 64-yard drive that ended with redshirt junior tailback Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.y.) taking a pile of players into the end zone from five yards out. Brandon Ross finished with 95 yards rushing whie McCombs had 53 for UConn.Maryland went for it and missed again on fourth-and-1 from the UConn 23, and in between, Brown was picked off by senior cornerback Taylor Mack (Powder Springs, Ga.) on the Huskies 22.Maryland got on the board in the second quarter when Brown kept the ball on a read option and went 41 yards up the middle of the Husky defense to tie the game, capping a four-play 80-yard drive. The teams traded field goals to keep the game tied at 10. Redshirt senior Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) had a 33-yard field goal, which was his ninth consecutive successful attempt. The Terps then put together a 10-play, 86-yard drive just before halftime, settling for a 21-yard field goal after Levern Jacobs stepped out of bounds on a 48-yard reception just before diving into the end zone.
