THE COACHES

CONNECTICUT�HEAD�COACH�PAUL�PASQUALONI

UConn head coach Paul�Pasqualoni�made his Husky head coaching debut a

successful one on Sept. 3 as the Huskies topped Fordham of the FCS. The

Cheshire, Conn., native was named the 28th head football coach in UConn his-

tory on January 14, 2011.

Pasqualoni has had a highly-successful career on all levels of football -- profes-

sional, college and high school. He was the head coach at Western Connecticut

from 1982-86 and led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1985.

He had an extremely successful tenure as the head coach at Syracuse from

1991-2004. Pasqualoni led the Orange to 107 wins, four BIG EAST titles and

a 6-3 postseason record. Among his bowl appearances at Syracuse were two

Fiesta Bowls (1992 and ‘97) and an Orange Bowl (‘98).

Pasqualoni� is� the� all-time� winningest� coach� in� BIG�EAST�Conferenceleague�wins�with�62�and�is�tied�for�first�in�overall�wins�with�108�with�FrankBeamer�of�Virginia�Tech. He is just one of two league coaches in history to win

four BIG EAST Championships. His overall college coaching record stands at 142-

77-1 (34-17 at WCSU, 107-59-1 at Syracuse and 1-1 at UConn).

For the previous five seasons, Pasqualoni had served on NFL staffs -- with

Dallas in 2005-07 and ‘10 and with Miami in 2008-09.

His first coaching job was an assistant coach at Cheshire HS from 1972-75. He

is a 1972 Penn State graduate.

IOWA�STATE�HEAD�COACH�PAUL�RHOADS

Paul�Rhoads�is in his third season in charge of the Iowa State program. He cur-

renlty has a 14-13 record at the school and led the Cyclones to an appearance in

the Insight Bowl in his first season in charge of the program.

Rhoads was the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2008 and the defensive

coordinator at Pittsburgh from 2000-07. He was an assistant coach at Iowa State

from 1995-99 and also has stops at Pacific, Ohio State and Utah State.

He is a 1989 graduate of Missouri Western and was a three-year defensive back

at the school.

TELEVISION�COVERAGE

Friday’s game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Mike�Gleason is on play-

by-play while John�Congemi�is on color.

The game will also be replayed on SNY in a condensed mode on the “Husky

Power Hour” on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 a.m. and 12 p.m. The game will be

replayed in its entirity on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4:00 p.m.

RADIO�COVERAGE

For the 20th consecutive season, WTIC�1080-AM in Hartford serves as the flag-

ship station for the UConn Radio Network. WTIC is the state’s only 50,000 watt

signal and can be heard in 23 states and parts of Canada.

Veteran UConn announcers Joe� D’Ambrosio (play-by-play) and WayneNorman (color commentary) return to call the action with Kevin�Nathan on the side-

lines and E.B.�Davis on production.

The UConn pregame show begins 90 minutes prior to kickoff, while at home

games, the UConn Tailgate Show will air two and a half hours prior to the game with

Kevin�Nathan�and Bob�Joyce. UConn football on home dates gets going early with

“Breakfast At The Rent” with Ray�Dunaway and Scott�Gray beginning at 6:00 a.m.

for noon games.

As the college basketball season tips off, SNY's all-access pass features at least 13

UConn men's basketball contests and a minimum of one women's basketball contest each

SERIES NOTES

HUSKIES�VS.�IOWA�STATE�ALL-TIME

Friday’s game marks just the second meeting between UConn and Iowa State with the

Huskies holding a 1-0 series edge. UConn won a game in Ames on November, 23, 2002 by

a score of 37-20. It gave UConn a final record of 6-6, its first non-losing season in four sea-

sons of FBS football. It was also UConn’s first-ever win over a bowl bound team.

UConn overcame a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to win that game. UConn took a

10-0 lead in the first quarter of the game but Iowa State came back to score the only points

of the season quarter and led 13-10 at the break. The Cyclones made it 20-10 on a third-

quarter TD, but UConn scored the final 27 points of the game for the win.

It marked UConn’s first win over a team that was nationally ranked at some point dur-

ing the season. ISU had peaked at No. 9 in the country. Running back Terry�Caulley�had

191 yards and a 68-yard TD run in the game while Dan�Orlovsky was 20 of 38 for three

TD.

The win for the Huskies became a historical milestone for the program as the next fall

it moved into Rentschler Field. The game inspired Randy�Smith, the late sports columnist

of the Manchester Journal-Inquirer to write: “This was the day that the man on the street

connected with UConn football. It’s his team, and by gawd, he’s going to cheer for it.”

HUSKIES�VS.�BIG�12�ALL-TIME

Connecticut has an overall record of 3-1 against the current members of the Big 12

Conference. It’s last game against the Big 12 was the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl as it lost to

Oklahoma by a 48-20 score.

UConn beat Baylor 30-22 in Waco on Sept. 19, 2009 and topped the Bears by a 31-28

score at Rentschler Field on Sept. 19, 2008. The other contest was the Iowa State game.

GREEN�AWARENESS�NIGHT

Friday night’s game will be Green Awareness Night at Rentschler Field. The annual

event is part of the “Husky Honor” program that promotes sportsmanship as well as

sustainability and environmental responsibility at UConn athletic events. UConn was

recently ranked No. 16 in the country in the Sierra Club’s annual ranking of the

nation’s “greenest” universities. EcoHusky student volunteers will be on site Friday

night to help fans recycle bottes and cans and to raise awareness about what the

University and Rentschler Field are doing to reduce waste and minimize the carbon

footprint at a UConn game.

RENTSCHLER�GAMEDAY

At UConn home games, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until

30 minutes before the game. It takes place between Gates A and B outside the stadi-

um gates...The offerings change each game, but activities typically include inflatable

games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from

various teams signing autographs....The “Husky Walk” is a chance for fans to wel-

come the UConn team as they get off the team buses and head to the stadium. That

takes place approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff between Gates A

and B...Once�again�this�season�at�the�end�of�home�games,�the�UConn�team�willsing�the�“UConn�Husky”�fight�song�in�front�of�the�student�section�at�RentschlerField.

SQUAD NOTES

HUSKIES�HAVE�BEEN�BOWL�ELIGIBLE

The� 2010� UConn� football� team� won� the� BIG�EAST�Championship� andadvanced�to�play�in�the�school’s�first-ever�BCS�game�--�the�Tostitos�FiestaBowl.�UConn made the bowl eligible mark for the sixth time in the past eight

seasons -- and the fourth consecutive.

UConn’s trip and victory over South Carolina in the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl

marked the fourth time that the Huskies went bowling and the third consecutive.

The Huskies also went to the International Bowl in 2009 and defeated Buffalo.

In 2007, UConn was 9-3 in the regular season and went on to the Meineke Car

Care Bowl. In 2004, the Huskies went 7-4 in the regular season and won the Motor

City Bowl. In 2003, UConn was 9-3, but did not go to a bowl because of its inde-

pendent status.

UCONN�IN�SEASON�OPENERS,�ROAD�OPENERS

UConn is 8-2 in season openers since making the jump to then-Division I-A in

2002. UConn has won each of its six season openers at Rentschler Field. Overall,

UConn is 51-59-2 in season openers dating back to 1896.

In terms of road openers, UConn had won four of its past five road openers

before the Vanderbilt game -- the exception being last year’s loss at Michigan to

open the season. UConn is 5-4 in road openers since joining the FBS ranks.

UConn road opening wins in that time frame are: 2009 at Ohio, 2008 at Temple,

2007 at Duke, 2006 at Indiana and 2003 at Army.

Connecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during

its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS

rankings.

UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5 of last season in its only ranking of the year. The

Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11,

2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

BIG�EAST�PRESEASON�POLLConnecticut was picked sixth in the BIG EAST preseason media poll. West

Virginia was first followed by Pittsburgh, USF, Syracuse and Cincinnati and then

UConn followed by Rutgers and Louisville.

UCONN�VS.�RANKED�TEAMS

The January 1, 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl game vs. Oklahoma marked the

17th time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the

Associated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn’s only win in those 17

games came on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first

played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn

has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct.

UCONN�FOOTBALL�A�LEADER�IN�ACADEMICS

The UConn football program continues to be a leader in the BIG EAST

Conference in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes.

UConn�was�the�top�team�in�the�NCAA’s�Graduation�Success�Rate�(GSR)of�both�October�2008�and�’09�among�league�schools.�The�Huskies�latestGSR,� released� in� October� 2010,� UConn� was� third� in� the� BIG�EAST�andwithin�four�points�of�the�second�place�team.

The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR

for African-American student-athletes among all state universities

that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven

years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the

American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation

rate.

UConn’s�overall�GSR� in�2009�was� the� third-highest�of� themore� than� 50� state� universities� that� participated� in� a� bowlgame.

In 2011, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the

UConn football team was an impressive 953 over a four-year

cycle, with a one-year mark of 959 for the 2009-10 academic year.

HUSKIES�VS.�THE�BIG�EAST

UConn owns an all-time mark of 22-26 in BIG�EAST�Conferencegames since joining the league for football in 2004. The Huskies

posted their best conference record with a 5-2 mark in 2007

and ‘10.

UConn’s current five-game BIG EAST Conference games

winning streak is the longest in school history.

HUSKIES�ON�THE�ROAD�SINCE�2002

The Huskies have put together a 21-30 road record since 2002.

In non-conference�road�affairs over that same span, Connecticut

has posted a mark of 16-12 and has won�eight�of�its�last�13�suchgames, including 2009 wins over Ohio, Baylor and Notre Dame and

2011 losses to Michigan and Temple.

HUSKIES�VS.�NON-CONFERENCE�FOES�SINCE�2002

Connecticut boasts a 41-19 record against non-conference oppo-

nents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in

2002.

The Huskies have won 16 of their last 22 regular season

non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via

a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North

Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ‘10 and

Vanderbilt in ‘11.

UConn has posted the following records in non-conference reg-

ular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1

(2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010)

and 1-1 (2011).

HUSKIES�IN�THE�NFL

As the NFL continues its preseason, there were a total of 14

Huskies in NFL camps before final cuts were made. UConn had 11former players that were on NFL rosters in 2009 (a school high)

and nine former Huskies are currently on NFL rosters.

The 2009 NFL Draft made history for the Huskies as four UConn

players were selected in the first 63 selections. UConn is the only

BIG EAST school to have four players picked that early since the

league was reorganized in 2005. UConn had two players selected

in the 2010 NFL Draft and four more in ‘11.

The�number�of�former�UConn�players�in�NFL�camps�is�nownine. The are:

* Offensive tackle William�Beatty of the New York Giants, who is

entering his third year and has six starts over the past two seasons

for the Giants.

* Running back Donald�Brown, who is entering his third year with

the Indianapolis Colts. He was UConn’s first All-American in the

BCS era and the Huskies’ first NFL First Round Draft Pick. He’s

with the Indianapolis Colts and played in the Super Bowl his rook-

ie year.

* Defensive back Darius�Butler, who played the past two seasons

for the New England Patriots, was waived by the team and then

signed by the Carolina Panthers

* Defensive back Tyvon�Branch, who is entering his fourth year

with the Oakland Raiders. He has started all 16 games for the

Raiders over the past two years.

* Wide receiver Marcus�Easley with the Buffalo Bills, who missed

all of last season (rookie) with an injury.

FB, Anthony�Sherman, a fifth round pick of the Cardinals

TB, Jordan�Todman, a sixth round pick of the Chargers

LB, Scott� Lutrus, who signed a free agent contract with the

Jaguars and was released and was then signed by the Rams on

the practice squad.

LB, Lawrence�Wilson, a sixth round pick of the Panthers, who

was cut by the team and later resigned for the practice squad ros-

ter.

HUSKIES�IN�THE�CFL

In addition, there are four former UConn players in the CanadianFootball�League this year.

Martin�Bedard (Montreal Alouettes) is entering his third year and

has been part of two Grey Cup championship teams.

Larry� Taylor� is in his fourth year in the league and is now with

Calgary after spending the first three with Montreal. He was the 2009

CFL Special Teams Player of the Year.

Julius�Williams, who played at UConn through 2008, is in his first

year with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Jordan�Younger is in his eighth season in the league -- all with

Toronto.

Taylor and Bedard and the Montreal team won Grey Cup cham-

pionship game last December by a 21-18 score against

Edmonton.

UConn is 26-15 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002.

BALL�CONTROL�IS�THE�KEY

A telling sign of UConn’s strong performance on both sides of the ball

during its tenure as a FBS program has been its ability to both record

and prevent long drives.

Since the start of the 2002 season, UConn’s offense has

strung together 77 scoring drives of at least 80 yards while the

Husky defense has surrendered just 56 such marches -- includ-

ing two by Michigan and Oklahoma, one by Buffalo and

Cincinnati last year and one by Vanderbilt on Saturday. UConn

had two 80-yard scoring drives vs. Fordham in the 2011 opener.

UConn also holds a 19-6 advantage over its opponents in the num-

ber of 90-yard and over drives since becoming a I-A program.

Michigan had a 96-yarder last year.

HUSKIES�DOMINATING�ON�BOTH�SIDES�OF�THE�BALL

Over the past 104 games, UConn has outgained its opponent 64times. This stretch, like many UConn trends, dates back to a 28-24

loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 26, 2002.

CONNECTICUT’S�FOUR�CAPTAINS��

The UConn team selected four team captains for the 2011 season,

Kendall�Reyes (for the second-consecutive year) and Kashif�Moorewith Moe�Petrus and Blidi�Wreh-Wilson.

McCOMBS�MAKES�IMPRESSIVE�DEBUT�VS.�FORDHAMUConn� freshman� Lyle� McCombs’s� (Staten� Island,� N.Y.)� 141yards�of�rushing�in�his�collegiate�debut�against�is�the�second-highest�when�compared�against��UConn’s�top�10�career�rush-ing�leaders.�The best mark belongs to Tony Jordan (No. 10), who

had 144 yards vs. Northeastern to open the 1978 season.

Other notables include: No. 1 Donald Brown, 118 yards vs. Rhode

Island in 2006; No. 2 Terry Caulley, 62 vs. Boston College, 2002; No.

3 Jordan Todman, 81 vs. Virginia in 2008 (third game of season, was

hurt for first two); No. 4 Wilbur Gillard, 91 vs. Furman in 1993; No. 6

Vinny Clements, 71 vs. Vermont in 1968; No. 7 Cornell Brockington,

25 vs. Indiana, 2003; No. 5 Ed Long, No. 8 Jeff Gallagher and No.

9 Andre Dixon did not have carries in their first career games.

McCOMBS�BACKS�IT�UP�VS.�VANDERBILTMcCombs� rushed� for� 118� yards� in� Saturday’s� game� vs.Vanderbilt� and�his� first� collegiate� game� vs.� FBS�competition.McCombs has now rushed for a total of 262 yards in his first two col-

legiate games. He is currently the 12th leading rusher in the country

at 129.50 yards per game and is tied for 15th in scoring.

THE�QUARTERBACK�RACE

Connecticut entered the 2011 season without a quarterback who

has started a collegiate game and with only one quarterback who

has played in a collegiate game.

UConn started three different QBs last year, who have all moved

on from the program -- graduated Zach Frazer with ten starts,

including the last six of the 2010 season; Cody Endres with two

starts and Mike Box with one.

Here’s a quick look at the three Husky QBs who are competing for

playing time this year:

* Senior Johnny�McEntee� (Fullerton, Calif.) -- Walk-on who has

played in two games over the past two seasons...gained internation-

al fame last winter with his “trick shot” video on YouTube...the video

now has over six million hits...started the Fordham game and was 8

of 12 in the air for 113 yards...started the Vanderbilt game and was

10 of 27 in the air for 99 yards with three interceptions and was

sacked four times.

* Redshirt freshman Scott� McCummings� (Natick, Mass.) --

Redshirt freshman who attended same high school as Doug

Flutie...had over 2,000 yards of passing in senior year with over

1,000 yards of rushing...passed for 15 TDs as a senior and rushed

for another 12...was 1 for 1 in the air vs. Fordham with a 55-yard TD

pass and also ran the ball seven times for 23 yards....carrried the

ball in the Vanderbilt game five times.

* Freshman Mike�Nebrich (Burke, Va.) -- Highly-decorated Virginia

high school player who enrolled at UConn for the spring 2011

semester...as a senior, broke the Virginia state record for all-purpose

yards with 4,968 and scored 59 TDs...had 11 yards of rushing vs.

Fordham with 60 passing yards on 3 of 8...was one for two in the air

vs. Vanderbilt.

EXPERIENCE�ON�THE�LINE

Whoever gets the nod at quarterback for the Huskies plays behind

an experienced offensive line.

Senior center Moe�Petrus (St. Laurent, Que.) has started 41 con-

secutive games for the Huskies -- and the last 28 at center.

Senior left tackle Mike�Ryan (Tamaqua, Pa.) returns after earning

All-BIG EAST first team honors last year and has started 23 games

over the past two years.

Junior Adam� Masters (Bethesda, Md.) plays right guard and

started ten games last year -- the final six at right tackle.

Sophomore Kevin� Friend� (Warrentown, Va.) plays right tackle

and had a pair of starts last year.

GOING�TO�THE�TIGHT�END

As the offensive philosophy of head coach Paul�Pasqualoni�and his

offensive coordinator George�DeLeone develops at UConn, throw-

ing to the tight end has obviously been emphasized.

The leading receiver on the team is redshirt junior Ryan�Griffin(Londonderry, N.H.), who has seven of UConn’s 23 receptions this

season. He also has 144 of UConn’s 332 receiving yards this year

and UConn’s only receiving TD.

DEFENSE NOTESLOTS�OF�STARTS,�STARTERS�BACK

Connecticut returns one of the most experienced defenses in the

country and in the BIG EAST Conference this season.

On the defensive line, UConn returns players that started 45

games in 2010 and 93 for their career.

The linebackers have just nine career and nine season starts

from ‘10 returning.

The secondary is also very experienced with 45 starts back from

last year and 71 for their careers.

For totals, the UConn defense has 100 starts returning from last

season and a total of 173 career starts.





JENNINGS�GETS�FIRST�CAREER�START

Connecticut redshirt junior Teddy�Jennings (Dayton, Ohio) made

his first career start against Fordham at defensive end. He

responded by making eight tackles -- with 2.5 for a loss. He

enjoyed another outstanding game on Saturday vs. Vanderbilt as

he made four tackles with 2.5 for a loss.

Jennings moved into the starting linep after playing in 13 games

over the past two years as a reserve. He started in place of the

injured Jesse Joseph, who did not dress for the first time in his

career vs. Fordham. The junior had started in 25 games over the

past two years, missing one game, but dressed for it.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

TEGGART�CAREER�LEADER�IN�FIELD�GOALS,�POINTS

Redshirt senior Dave� Teggart (Northborough, Mass.) has con-

nected on all 105 of his extra point attempts during his career --

including 36 in 2010 and 47 in 2009. The 47-straight extra points

from 2009 is a school record while his 36 from 2010 is third.

His 54 career field goals is a school record, which he broke

with a 24-yard FG vs. Cincinnati in 2010.

His� 105� extra� points� is� tied� for� second� in� school� historywhile�Matt�Nuzie�had�124�from�2003-06.�His�266�career�pointsis� first� in� school� history� and� he� topped� that� record� onSaturday�night�vs.�Vanderbilt.Teggart’s�25�field�goals�last�year�was�a�school�single-sea-

son�record.�He had a total of 14 field goals in 2009 which is tied

as the sixth-highest in school history while his 13 as a freshman is

seventh. He already has two this year.

Teggart recorded what is arguably the biggest play in school his-

tory in the regular season finale of 2010 as he kicked a 52-yard

field goal with 17 seconds left to play to lift UConn to a 19-16 win

over USF that sent the Huskies to their first BCS game in school

history. Earlier in the fourth quarter of that game, he kicked a 50-

yarder.

Teggart kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to lift UConn to a

16-13 win over West Virginia on Oct. 29 of last year. He�had�a�totalof�three�field�goals�in�that�game�and�was�named�the�BIG�EASTSpecial�Teams�Player�of�the�Week�for�his�efforts.

Those “final play” game-winners were the second and third of

his career as he ended the 2009 regular season in fine form as he

booted a 42-yard field goal as time expired to give the Huskies a

29-27 win over USF.

Dating back to 2009, Teggart had kicked a field goal in 15 of

the past 17 games. Teggart kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:10

to go that tied the game vs. Notre Dame (Nov. 21, 2009) -- a con-

test the Huskies eventually won in overtime.

Teggart�is�the�first�kicker�in�school�history�to�successfullyconvert�his�first�11�field�goal�attempts.

NICK�WILLIAMS�LEADS�THE�COUNTRY�IN�KO�RETURNSUConn sophomore Nick�Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) returned

two kickoffs for TDs in 2010. Against Pittsburgh he returned a kick-

off 95 yards for a touchdown. The KO return came at a key time as

the Panthers had just gone up by eight points, 21-13.

Williams also had a 100-yard KO return for a touchdown vs.

Rutgers -- the fourth in school history.

Williams led the country in kickoff returns last year with 35.29

yards per return.

Williams�becomes� just� the�second�Husky�ever� to�have� twoKO�returns�for�a�TD�in�a�career -- joined by Tyvon Branch, who had

both of his in 1997.

He had UConn’s only kickoff return against Fordham for 32 yards

and had four for 74 yards total vs. Vanderbilt.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES

RENTSCHLER�FIELD

The Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford

for the 2003 season. Conveniently located within miles of Interstates

91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land

donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney

Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that com-

pany’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity

of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites in a massive press box tower which

helps enclose the natural grass field.

A�HOT�TICKET

Swelling interest in the Husky football program as it gradually moved

up into BIG EAST play can perhaps be best evidenced by the rise in

attendance. UConn sold 28,000 season tickets in 2008 and sold its

entire allotment of student season tickets at 4,700. These figures are

staggering sums considering that the entire 2001 season ticket base

was around 4,000. In 2002, the number reached 11,300 in the final

season of Memorial Stadium. The burgeoning season ticket base

more than doubled to 24,000 for the inaugural season at Rentschler

Field and rose to 28,000 a year later in 2004. UConn reached an all-

time high of 32,000 season tickets in 2005.

SELLOUT�STATSThe Huskies have sold out 29 of their first 52 dates at Rentschler

Field, including a stretch of 12�in�a�row.

UConn has played to 96.7-pct. of capacity all-time there, draw-

ing 1,998,010 fans, or an average of 38,423 per game.

RENTSCHLER�FIELD�PROVES�FRIENDLY�FOR�HUSKIES

The Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also

6-0 last year. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-

.500 record at Rentschler Field.

The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single sea-

son which was previously set in 2004.

UConn� has� now�won� ten� consecutive� games� at� RentschlerField.

UConn presently stands at 40-12� all-time� at� Rentschler� Fieldincluding a 23-4�mark�in�non-conference�games.

MICHIGAN,�TENNESSEE�WILL�VISIT�RENTSCHLER�FIELD

Following UConn’s trip to Ann Arbor on Sept. 4, the Wolverines will

come to Rentschler Field on Sept. 21, 2013 to take on the Huskies.

UConn will also play a home-and-home series with Tennessee

beginning in 2015 with the Volunteers coming to Rentschler Field on

Sept. 26 with a return trip to Knoxville on Sept. 3, 2016.

Other upcoming non-conference opponents coming to Rentschler

Field include Iowa State (2011), North Carolina State (2012) and

Maryland (2013). UConn has now played host to non-conference

opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 10, Big XII and

Southeastern Conference at Rentschler Field.

EAST�HARTFORD,�Conn.�-�Freshman running back Lyle McCombs(StatenIsland, N.Y) rushed for 141 yards and four touchdowns in his first collegiategame as the University of Connecticut football team won their 2011 seasonopener, 35-3, over Fordham before a crowd of 34,562 at Rentschler Field.

The game marked the Connecticut debut for head coach Paul Pasqualoni,who tied Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech for the most overall wins by a BIGEAST coach. They both have 108 victories. Pasqualoni was the firstConnecticut football coach to win his debut since 1923.

The Huskies initial drive ended in a punt after two first downs, but on theirsecond possession began to force their will on their FCS opponent after forc-ing a Fordham three-and-out. A six-play, 58-yard drive was capped by aMcCombs two-yard run. The key play on the drive was a 24-yard pass fromJohnny McEntee (Fullerton, Calif.) to Isiah Moore(Cambridge, Mass.).

The Huskies started the redshirt junior McEntee, but Pasqualoni playedthree signal callers in the contest. Redshirt freshman Scott McCummings(Natick, Mass.) and true freshman Michael Nebrich(Burke, Va.) both playedwell in their Connecticut unveilings.

Early in the second quarter, the Huskies took over from their own 20 andMcCombs had his first big play from scrimmage, rambling 60 yards beforebeing caught at the Ram two-yard line. Two plays later, McCombs scoredfrom the one and Connecticut had a 14-0 lead.

The Connecticut defense, which was spectacular all day, got its first turnoverof the season when redshirt freshman safety Byron Jones (New Britain,Conn.) picked off a Peter Maetzold pass. On the next play from scrimmage,McCummings hit redshirt junior tight end Ryan Griffin(Londonderry, N.H.)with a beautiful 55-yard catch-and-run off of play action to put the Huskiesahead by three scores.

The Huskies kept that 21-0 lead until midway through the third quarter whenMcCombs capped drives with scoring runs of five- and one-yard. McCombs'four touchdowns was the first time a Connecticut footballer achieved thatfeat since Jordan Todman turned the trick against Cincinnati in 2009.

McEntee completed eight-of-12 passes for 113 yards, while Nebrich wasthree-of-eight, for 60 yards and one interception. The McCummings scoringpass to Griffin was his only attempt of the game. Griffin set a career-standardwith his 97 receiving yards.

The Connecticut defense held the Rams to just 169 total yards of offenseand was led by redshirt junior linebacker Jory Johnson(Mobile, Ala.), whohad 11 tackles. Redshirt junior defensive end Teddy Jennings (Dayton, Ohio)had 2.5 tackles for loss.

NASHVILLE,�Tenn.�-�Vanderbilt held the University of Connecticut offenseto 193 yards, 118 of rushing by redshirt freshman Lyle McCombs(StatenIsland, N.Y.), as the Commodores posted a 24-21 win over the Huskiesbefore a crowd of 32,119 at Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday night. McCombs rushed for his 118 yards on 27 carries and has now rushedfor at least 100 yards in his first two collegiate games. Husky junior quarterback Johnny McEntee(Fullerton, Calif.) was 10 of27 in the air for 99 yards, but had three interceptions. Larry Smith was 12 of 24 in the air for 140 yards while Jerron Seymourhad eight carries for 70 yards. On Vanderbilt's first drive of the fourth quarter, redshirt freshman YawinSmallwood (Worcester, Conn.) returned a fumble 64 yards with 10:34 left togo, giving UConn its first lead of the game, as the Huskies took a 21-14 lead.On the fumble return, Vandy had the ball at the UConn 36 and SioMoore's(Apex, N.C.) hit of Smith jarred the ball loose and Smallwood washome free. After the UConn defense forced Vanderbilt to punt on their ensuingdrive, McEntee threw his third interception of the night, as Robby Barbierireturned the interception 50 yards to tie the game at 21-21. Vanderbilt was able to take the lead with 2:56 left, as Carey Spear con-verted a 31-yard field goal for the 24-21 Vandy advantage. UConn trailed 14-3 at halftime, but scored the only ten points of the thirdquarter to make it 14-13 entering the final stanza. On Vanderbilt's third playfrom scrimmage of the second half, junior Jory Johnson (Mobile, Ala.) pickedoff a Smith pass to give UConn the ball at the Vandy 17. UConn could onlymove the ball six yards to set up a 28-yard field goal by senior kicker DaveTeggart(Northborough, Mass.). The Huskies then cut the lead to a point, 14-13, as redshirt freshmanByron Jones(New Britain, Conn.) blocked a punt in the endzone. It wasUConn's first blocked punt since 2008 and the first for a TD since 2002. Connecticut moved the ball efficiently on the first possession of thegame as it marched the ball to the Commodore 12-yard line with a first down.The Huskies could only manage four more yards, which set up a 25-yardfield goal by Teggart. The field goal gave Teggart the UConn career scoringrecord with 262 points, which he extended later in the game. Vanderbilt went four and out on its first possession, but McEntee threwa first down interception picked off by Kenny Ladler that put the ball at theUConn 42. Vanderbilt came right back on the next play with a 42-yard TDpass from Smith to Chris Boyd to give the Commodores a 7-3 lead. Vandy took a 14-3 lead on a 40-yard rush by Seymour on a second andten play that capped a six-play 80 yard drive. The Commodores had 134yards of total offense in the first quarter and 82 of them came on scoringplays. The Commodores maintained the lead 14-3 at halftime after a secondquarter that did not feature any scoring as UConn only had 35 yards of totaloffense with VU having 28.
