DAYS ON THE JOB (DOJ) RECAP: Bay Area

1

Over two days, Nov 20th & 21st, the UCLA Anderson SBA had the opportunity to meet with a few technology-focused sports companies that play key roles in the sports industry. They included:

• Pac-12 Networks • StubHub • Twitter Sports

Pac-12 Networks On Thursday morning, our first day in San Francisco, we visited the Pac-12 Networks main office. We met with a group led by Bob Keyser, VP of Partner Services. Bob gave us a wonderful presentation that summarized how the Pac-12 Networks operate, and where they believe the future of college sports media is headed. The Pac-12 is a unique sports media entity, because it is 100% owned and operated by the Pac-12 conference (vs. the SEC, for example, which is owned entirely by ESPN/ABC.) We were lucky enough to be given a tour of their relatively new, state-of-the-art office.

StubHub In the afternoon, we made our way to the StubHub offices and met with multiple speakers from a wide range of departments and roles. Product management, business development, and HR were some of the highlights. Each speaker spoke to the passion they had for their job, while describing StubHub as a place and product that delivers happiness. With a series of great questions from the SBA audience, and a happy atmosphere supported by the beer and cupcakes that StubHub provided (seriously…), this was a very memorable company visit.

SPEAKER SERIES RECAPS

Leigh Steinberg

On October 20th, the Sports Business Association had the privilege of hearing Leigh Steinberg speak. During his time as a sports agent, Steinberg represented

Twitter Sports On Friday, we visited Twitter in downtown San Francisco, where we learned about Twitter’s operations regarding sports - including athletes, teams, leagues, sponsors, live games, and highlights. Despite having a small sports department, it is amazing how much of the Twitter ecosystem is made up of Tweets about sports.

sixty first-round picks in the NFL Draft, including a record eight number one selections.

Steinberg spoke about his experiences representing these players, however, the topic he spoke most about was students finding their passion and incorporating that into their jobs. For Steinberg, that was giving back to the communities that both he and his players were a part of, so he worked to set up charitable foundations with all of his athletes. Hearing Steinberg speak was a fantastic opportunity for the SBA to develop a deeper understanding around the player representation side of the sports industry.

Baron Davis 2x NBA All-Star and Media Entrepreneur

In December, Sports Business Radio’s Brian Berger and the SBA hosted NBA star and UCLA alumnus Baron Davis. In this widely attended event, Davis spoke to students from across the university about his experiences at UCLA, his early NBA days, his trips overseas to China with fellow basketball stars, and his life after basketball, including his foray into the media and entertainment industry. Davis was generous in allowing a lengthy question and answer segment, which included insights on his relationships with different NBA coaches. The event can be listened to in its entirety here: through Sports Business Radio here.
