» Since SGA Approval in May 2011, the University Center Transformation Project contracted out for design and construction services.˃ Local firm WHR and national firm WTW are providing architectural design services 

for the project.  WHR employs a number of UH alumni, several of whom are working on this project.  WTW has been nationally recognized numerous times for their Student Union and University Center designs.

˃ Tellepsen, the construction firm, has been active in the Houston area for over 100 years.

» The UC Transformation Project has worked through a number of design options before deciding on one that decommissions the UC Underground and adds two additions—one featuring student organizations and other services, and one featuring a new ballroom, another large meeting room, and a 450‐seat theater.

» The decision to relocate the bookstore specifically took into consideration a number of factors˃ Moving the bookstore from the east side to the west side will allow for a single unified 

loading dock, providing aesthetic and operational benefit to the University˃ The engergized ‘Cougar Boulevard’ will provide a  synergistic relationship between the 

New UC, the Library, and the Academic Core of Campus˃ Moving the bookstore will create a more robust multipurpose lounge space on the first 

floor of the building, greatly enhancing seating capacity and evening/weekend program options

˃ Saves considerable money due to only moving the bookstore once, and ensures the UC is able to maintain operation throughout the entire renovation process

» Preservation of the mural and the Arbor Statue have been paramount priorities throughout this process.

» Key Dates˃ April 26, 2012 – University Center Transformation Project Ceremonial Groundbreaking – 10am, UC Front Lawn

˃ June 2012 – University Center Transformation Project Begins Construction

˃ December 2013 – First Phase of Transformed UC (including dining, the new bookstore, theater, and more) Complete

˃ December 2014  ‐ Second Phase of Transformed UC (including new meeting rooms, lounge space, Games Room, and more) Complete

˃ January 2015 – Grand Opening of The New UC
