Preface

The University of Baltimore Factbook 2017 is the second release, following last year’s inaugural publication. It is expanded considerable with the aim of including information that may not otherwise be readily available. The intent is to produce a handy and timely “go-to” document of information about the University's student, faculty, staff, resources, and activi-ties. As such, it will be of interest to various University stakeholders, including prospective and current students and their families, alumni, our faculty and staff, state and local governments, and others having general interest in the University.

The information has been complied by the University’s Office of Institutional Research, but the report draws on broad resources and personnel across the University, whose support is much appreciated.

Your comments and suggestions are welcomed, and these may be emailed to [email protected] . An online version of the Factbook may be found at University_of_Baltimore_Factbook_2017.

Explanatory notes:

(a) A diversity index as here defined ranges from 0% to 50% and is the likelihood of randomly selecting two students of which one is from an underrepresented racial group and the other is from a represented racial group.

(b) A score of 50% shows an equal balance among the racial groups; a score of 0% shown only a single racial group.

(c) As this is a campus diversity index, suggesting the likelihood of a students of various racial groups encountering each other in a cam-pus setting, the University of Maryland-University College was excluded as it is principally a distance-education institution.

(d) Historically Black Institutions (HBIs) are intentionally structured to promote minority opportunities, and will accordingly be less racially diverse.

(e) Data will be lagged one year owing to the timing of its availability from the universities that are not members of the University Sys-tem of Maryland, i.e., St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Morgan State University.

Definitional notes:

1An HBI institution, stands for Historically Black Institution (also known as, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)) 2 Diversity Index equals 1-((column (5)2 + (column (6)2) 3Excludes foreign students and students of unreported race. 4Under-represented racial group are the racial groups: African-American, American Indian, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and students of two or more races.
