    A CIRCUMPOLAR LIVELIHOOD

    Eurasia marks the birthplace ofreindeer husbandry, but it has spreadaround the globe and is practicedacross 9 nation states by more than20 different peoples. Approximately100,000 people are engaged inreindeer husbandr toda .

    Traditional forms of reindeerhusbandry represent the veryessence of sustainability and asystematic means by whichfragile northern and mountainecosystems can be utilized thanks to generations ofexperience accumulated,conserved, developed andadapted to the climatic andadministrative systems of theNorth.

    UArctic EAL T Institute is an institute established as a legacy ofthe International Polar Year (IPY), to maintain networksestablished in the circumpolar north during IPY and to increasethe cooperation related to information exchange, research and

    education in circumpolar reindeer husbandry and to buildcapacity in reindeer herders societies.

    Increase the public understanding for Arcticissues and challenges for indigenous peoplesand reindeer husbandry.

    Increase the educational and research capacityof Arctic peoples, especially indigenous andreindeer herding peoples.

    Replicating to other regions affected byclimate change and globalization theindigenous peoples gained knowledge andability to deal with such changes.

    UArcticEALT Institute

    REINDEER HERDERS KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTIONThe UArctic EALT Institute was endorsed by the Board of UArctic and founded by the AssociatReindeer Herders, the Smi University College and the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry daunting challenges facing reindeer herding and other indigenous livelihoods as a result of climatrapid societal changes.

    A UNIQUE CIRCUMPOLAR INSTITUTEOPENED 2011 YOUTH FOCUS CIRCUMPOLAR FOCUS

    The first official institutecouncil was hold in Troms onJanuary 26th 2011. Dr. MikhailPogodaev, executive chair ofAssociation of World ReindeerHerders was elected as firstpresident. Herzen StatePedagogical University ofRussia, St Petersburg was thenaccepted as a new partner inthe institute which will beopened on March 24th 2011 inKautokeino Norway.

    Dr Robert Corell former leaderof ACIA in Arctic Council willassist in the development ofthe Institute. Professor SveinD. Mathiesen is theinternational coordinator ofthe Institute at InternationalCentre for ReindeerHusbandry.

    The Prince Albert II of Monacofunded the UArctic EALTReindeer Herding YouthInternational StudentRecruitment Program for youthfrom Russia and Mongolia.

    The Institute shall be a tool forrecruiting indigenous youth toscientific work and Arcticleadership.

    The opening was accompaniedby a seminar with a focus on theimportance of traditionalknowledge in changing northern

    communities with an emphasison youth participation.

    The Institute shall have acircumpolar focus, and workfor the benefit of circumpolareindeer herders.

    The Institute shall contributebuilding competence locally reindeer herders societies,

    through research on themesimportant for reindeerhusbandry, recruitment ofindigenous students, theirtraining and education.

    Other activities includecommunity-based workshop

    seminars and conferences incircumpolar reindeer herdinareas, and the outreaching ofthe activities of the Institute,including research results.
