NASSANO, SHIRLEY AND GUNNELL SHINE IN FIRST TWO GAMES; HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS AND YOUTH DAY STUDENTS HERE FOR YMCA

PROGRAMS GUESTS FOR TONIGHTS GAME

Jim Gunnell

Millard Shirley

Jerry N2.ssano

Millard Shirley, junior fullback from Springfield, in the two wins the Hilltoppers have racked up so far this season has gained a total of 156 yards in 22 carries to rank as Western's leading ground gainer. Close behind the hard-hitting fullback come Jim Gunnell, senior right halfback, who has gained 152 yards in 18 carries. Both boys had a good night against East Tennessee last week as the Hilltoppers handily whipped the Buccaneers 24-6. Gunnell was almost unstoppable as he picked up 125 yards in 14 attempts. Shirley was just as effective as he ripped off 106 yards in 12 runs. Both have scored two touchdowns.

Against Wittenberg in the opener Shirley gained 50 yards in nine carries and Gunnell picked up 27 in four attempts.

Jerry Nassano has been deadly with his passing. In the two games played he has connected on 18 of 26 aerials for a total of 202 yards and two touchdowns. Only two of his passes have been intercepted. His direction of the team has been outstanding.

Proof of the effective play in the Hilltopper line is shown by the fact that the Hilltoppers' two opponents to date have been held to a total net gain of 355 yards. The Hilltoppers have allowed 177 yards on the ground and 163 in the air. Five passes have been intercepted.

Cheerleaders from south central and Western Kentucky high schools and students from those high schools here for the YMCA Cheerleaders Clinic and Youth Day are guests of Western tonight. We welcome them to this first Ohio Valley Conference football game of the season for the Hilltoppers against the strong Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.

Western is happy to have these school visitors on the campus. We hope that today has been enjoyable and profitable for all of you and that you will come back whenever you can.

The YMCA's first Cheerleaders Clinic was held on Western campus last year and was a tremendous success with cheerleaders from more than 50 high schools attending. This year the YMCA added the Youth Day program for students from the high schools other than the cheerleaders to be held at the same time the Clinic is held.

All visitors from the high schools registered this afternoon in Van Meter Auditorium at 1 P. M. The Cheerleaders Clinic got underway in the Western gymnasium at 2 P. M. A panel of outstanding school leaders discussed 'Cheerleading and Its Importance' following which the Western cheerleaders gave demonstrations and led the entire group in several cheers . .

The Youth Day program was held in Van Meter Auditorium starting at 2 P. M. A panel of Western faculty members discussed college training and its importance.

When both of the programs were completed this afternoon the visitors were taken on a tour of the campus by Western students.

Next week the Hilltoppers go to Morehead for another OVC game. The following week, Oct.· 16, Western comes back to the Stadium for an afternoon clash with Northeast Louisiana. This game has been designated as the annual Band Day. Some twenty high school bands will be on hand to participate in a gigantic halftime show with the Western Band. Each year the Band Day ceremonies rank as one of the most colorful and entertaining activities of the football season.
