Today's game with Sou theast Missouri marks the Hilltop pers' last home game this season. Co-captains Willi e W!l!tson and Willard PJ'ic"e ' have led their teammates to six wins a·rid 'one loss as Western has est!l!blished itself a~ one of the top offensive teams among the small colleges in the nation. In passing offense the Hilltoppers rank third with 1,479 yards as 153 passes have been attempted and 97 completed.
I n total offense the Hill toppers went to the 3,044-yard mark against Eastern last Saturday when 439 yards were rolled up for an average of 434.9 per game. The 48-6 defea t pinned on Eastern pushed Western's total points scored for the season to 2~9 , an all- time high for ' a Western team. '
In every department, both offensive and defensive, the Hilltoppers this. year !lave .'b~en outstanding. The iron-clad defensive unit has stopped numerous scoring threats by the opponents and turned the oppOSition's errors into scores for Western. Pass interceptions, recovered fumbles, blocked kicks, etc., h~ve 1t<'eI?- comrn.~nplace in every game as Walt-er Apperson, Red Patterson , Max Stevens and Company roc ked and sock~d. . .,... ' .'
When .the Hilltogr>\>rs go on the offense, Jimmy Feix dir.ects the attack behind an impregnable line which opens huge holes fb;' such powerful and rapid runners as Gene McFadden, J ohn Sowders, Jim S'-nfoi'd, Wilile Watson , Ray Nutter, Max Stevens and a h ost of others. Once the ball carrier is loose, vicious and deadly .. blocking clears the path.
When the Hill toppers take to the air Feix has plenty of sticky-fingered receivers in . Bill Ploumis, Stevens, R. H. Simpson, Jack Binkley, Sowders, McFadden, . in fact any of the Hill toppers are capable pass receivers.
So today one' cif Western's greatest football teams closes out the season at horne. This spectacular . combine will long be remembered . Next week the ·rip 'em up , team 'em up 'Hilltoppers go to Murray for their last ' gaine of the season and resume . a rivalry of long standing with the Thoroughbreds.
