Student Profiles:

I am currently a sophomore at Stanford University in California pursuing a degree in management science and engineering. Finding the right school can be difficult while trying to maintain the grades to be accepted to that “right” school. That is where the guidance program at TCS proved invaluable. Without the help of Mr. Legakis and the rest of the guidance team I never would have been aware of the opportunities that awaited me on the opposite side of the continent. In fact, during our university fair project in Grade 10 I completed my presentation on Stanford because of a hunch my teacher had. Navigating the world of post high school education can be difficult, but with the help of the guidance program my decision was made stress free.

Cal Quantrill (Class of 2013)Port Hope, Ontario, Canada • Stanford University, California

I always knew I wanted to go to university after high school, but had no concept of what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. After an exciting grad year filled with long talks with my advisor, last minute meetings and going over application essays together, I found a new home at Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. With the support from TCS, I was able to turn my vague dream about college into reality. Whether I had questions about the sometimes confusing application process or just needed some words of encouragement, the faculty was always able and eager to help. As an international student, I am thankful for my time at TCS and the constant support that gave me the courage to apply in the U.S.A.

Sarah Gerwens (Class of 2014) Dortmund, Germany • Hofstra University, Long Island, New York

Making one on one appointments to discuss my university applications was no struggle as every guidance teacher at TCS welcomes you with open arms. As I was applying to only universities in the U.K., I found it very helpful to fortunately have Ms. Brierley, who was from the U.K. herself knowing more than I had imagined. She led me along the path to a minimally stressful and, ultimately successful application process. She not only read over and critiqued my personal statement numerous times, but she also kept me on track with my portfolios, interview preparations and mark updates and requirements.

Alyssa Kirton (Class of 2014) St. George, Barbados • Oxford Brookes, Oxford, United Kingdom

After playing Bigside hockey for four years, I knew that I wanted to continue my hockey career at the university level, which made my university selection process a little more difficult. After meeting many times with my academic counsellor, Mr. Legakis, and my “hockey counsellor,” Mr. Traugott, I was able to sift through universities in Canada and the U.S. to find the one place that would be well-suited for me in terms of both academics and hockey. University has been everything I hoped, and I am forever grateful to TCS for sending me in the right direction.

Julianne Bruce (Class of 2012) Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada • Carleton University, Ottawa

For years I have been fascinated by medicine and its importance to society. It was during guidance class in Grade 10 that I discovered the possibility of a direct-entry medicine program in the U.K., and, in particular, the program at the University of St. Andrews. After researching and presenting on St. Andrews for our project, I began to work towards my new goal. Over the next two years, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Legakis helped clearly establish criteria required for a successful application, from course selections, to the personal statement, to the interview. Throughout Grade 12, Mr. Bailey was willing to meet with me at a moment’s notice to go over my application with me, which took a lot of stress out of the process. Thank you to him and to TCS as a whole for helping set me up for success.

Julian McDonald (Class of 2015) Lakefield, Ontario, Canada • University of St. Andrews, Scotland, United Kingdom
